9. Chapter 8

Brittney’s POV

I glanced at the clock before leaving to go to the park. 11:55.

“Brit, we’re having lunch with Michael’s family and we’re leaving right now,” mum called, holding a huge bowl in her arms.

“What? Now? As in, right now?” I asked, my eyes widening. Suddenly I remembered. I was supposed to be spending the whole day with Mikey, Ash and Luke.

“Yes, right now. And why do you seem so upset? You love going to their houses,” mum asked, frowning.

“But-“I started to say, but mum cut me off before I could say anything else.

“No but’s. Ash and Luke with be there too,” she said, dragging me along with her.

“Okay,” I said, reluctantly following her.

“I still don’t understand why you don’t want to go. You usually look forward to meeting up with them,” she said, clearly confused. “And I’ve noticed you always leave the house at around this time to go on a walk. What are you doing?” she asked, eyeing me suspiciously.

“I’m not doing anything. I’m just going on a walk. And I didn’t leave the house at this time yesterday,” I pointed out as we walked along the street towards Mike’s house.

She sighed, giving up. “Come on, walk quicker. We’re already late.”

I shrugged, following her along. Suddenly, in the corner of my eye, I saw the bush near the bench move, causing me to stop walking.

“Brit? What’s wrong?” mum asked, who also had stopped walking.

“Nothing, just thought I saw a bird injure itself,” I stuttered, continuing to walk. “Come on, we’re already late.”

We continued to walk silently side by side. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw his head sticking out from behind the bush, watching me walk away.

‘I’m so sorry’ I mouthed to him, as he shook his head, smiling sadly.

He silently started running off in the other direction again, as I hopelessly watched him, not able to do anything.

“BRITTNEYYYYYY,” a chorus of voices screamed when I stepped foot in the house.

“Hello there, did you miss me?” I asked jokingly, as all of them rolled their eyes.

“Duh. We usually spend the whole day together. Now we only spend lunch or dinner together,” Luke said, pouting.

“Naww, I’m sowwee. From now on we’ll spend more time together,” I grinned, poking his dimples.

“What have you been doing lately?” Mike asked, a suspicious look on his face.

I nervously laughed. “Just surfing the internet and going on walks. Nothing much.”

I’ve been seeing you hanging around that old park a lot lately,” Ash said slowly, narrowing his eyes at me.

“That doesn’t matter now, does it? Let’s just go have fun,” I suggested, trying to move the focus away from the park to now.

“Yes,” Luke said, breaking out into a grin. “Lets.”

After spending the whole day with those dorks, I was exhausted. I arrived back home, falling dramatically onto my bed. I sighed, looking over at the time.

7:05. Maybe I should go to the park to see if he’s there, since he said he could come here at 7:14.

I reluctantly got off my comfy bed, and started making my way towards the bench. I sat down, sighing. It was 7:07, so it’ll be a while before he arrived, if he even does. I shoved my earphones into my ears, and closed my eyes.

I felt someone tap my shoulder, causing me to jerk up in surprise, yanking my earphones out, only to reveal the grinning boy next to me.

“Brittney, darling, you waited for me,” he exclaimed, pulling me in for a hug.

“Of course I did. And I’m sorry I wasn’t able to come today,” I said, as he pulled away, shaking his head.

“No no, that doesn’t matter, because you came out and waited for me now,” he grinned, seeming the happiest he had been in ages.

“I’m sorry, but I have to go back now,” I said reluctantly. “Mum wants to have dinner with me.”

His smile disappeared for a second, before he recovered, grinning even harder than before.

“Well I guess this is goodbye then,” I smiled, giving him a hug.

“Yes, Brittney dear, tomorrow, 11:59, don’t forget,” he called, as I walked away, back to my house.

When I had reached the front door, I turned around. His hands were in his hoodie pockets, and his head was hung low. He shrugged, looking at me to give one last wave, before finally running in the opposite direction.
