If things weren't already bad enough, I had my 'dead' mother on the phone trying to talk to me. "Jesus Christ, is this really happening?" I asked no one. I put my hand on my forehead and looked down. "What's going on here? Is this a joke?" I snarled into the reciever.
"No joke, Niall hunny. It's a long story." I felt like I heard her smile. "I'm sure you know how your life worked." She said, I breathed out my nose. "I hope you'er not still having that life with a baby around, Niall."
"What life?" I asked.
"The mob, the drugs, the fighting." She listed off.
"That's why your father and I had to leave. We're not dead, baby, we're.. on vacation?" She tried to make this sound better, and it really wasn't working.
"But I fucking buried you? Both of you? What the hell?" I mumbled the last part and shook my head, sitting back against the bench. My life has always been really fucked up, but this was a whole new type of 'what the fuck'. I rubbed my face, "alright, how did you know I had a baby?" I was too tired to listen to her explain that my parents aren't dead.
"Jax." She paused, as if she was waiting for me to freak out. I just sighed though, no energy to fight with her about Jax, or about what he did. "Can we see her?" She asked, making me sweat. I was not ready to explain this to Eve, especially when she's in the hospital. "Niall? Are you still there?" She said in my ear.
"Yaeh, yeah, sorry." I mummered. "I'm just tired." I yawned and then looked up as the doctor walked toward me. "I gatta go." I hung up and stood to my feet. "So?" I asked. He just looked at me. "What?" I said, feeling as if my voice should be a little louder than it was. The nurse walked out behind him, standing a few steps back from the doctor. "What's going on!" I demanded.
"We looked through her files." He cleared his throat. "When she was in the car accident and was sent into immeidate labour." He swallowed. "With broken ribs," he looked at Aofie. "It caused an internal bleed that no one caught."
"Okay?" I was starting to get angry. "Just get to the point, please." I sighed a frustrated sigh. Aofie started to cry, just what I needed. The look on the nurses face made it clear I was not going to like what I was about to hear. "Can someone tell me something!" I shouted, causing Aofie to start screaming. "Shh baby, shh. I'm sorry." I tried to sooth her.
"She was left too long. She lost too much blood." The doctor rushed out, leaving me to put two-and-two together. I shook my head, asking him to explain. "Mr. Horan, I'm sorry, your wife passed during emergancy surgery." He gulped. "I tried everything I could to stop the bleeding, taking out the piece of bone ludged in her lung, but it only made it worse. We could stop it in time."
"But, she was fine?" I said.
He shook his head. "On the outside maybe. But that much blood lose caused lack of oxygen to the body and brain, making her body freak out and that's why she started to bleed today. Her body was screaming at her to see that something was wrong."
"Oh my God."
"Her brain was gathering only enough blood and oxygen to keep her half-alive. I'm sorry, there's nothing more I could do." He put his hand on my shoulder, like it was suppose to comfort me. He touched Aofie's cheek, him and the nurse walking away.
I've seen a lot of dead people in my life time, but none of them meant anything to me. I've put bullets through people's head and thought nothing of it, hell, I've killed people with my own two fists and walked away, slept like a baby that night. And now it's like all those ghosts have come back to haunt me, I feel like I can hear them laughing at me, telling me they all said 'one day he'll get his karma'. Well, here it is.
I walked in the front door, thankful that Aofie fell asleep in the car. My house felt cold, empty. And when Ella ran to the front door and seen that Eve wasn't with me, she sat on my feet and starred at me. I walked upstairs with Ella right behind me and put Aofie in her crib, pulling the blankets up to her stomach and walking out, closing the door. I put the sheets in the dryer and went downstairs.
I was feeling no emotion, I feel like it's better that way. To just feel nothing, maybe that's better? But as I sat on the couch I felt myself pulling my phone out of my pocket and dialing Harry's number. It rang and rang and rang until he finally picked up. "Hello?" He spoke.
"Harry?" I gulped. Now I was feeling the lose run through my body.
"Nialler?" He sounded excited. "Mate, haven't hear from you in forever!" He said, half laughing like he couldn'tbelieve it was me. "How's everything?"
"Um." I murmered. "Eve, ah." I coughed, feeling my throat seize up.
"How is she anyway? Did she have the baby yet?" He seemed so happy.
"Yeah, yeah she had the baby. A baby girl, Aofie." I said with a smile. "It was an emergancy labour." I explained, rubbing my chest. It hurt so bad. "We got into a car accident, sent her into labour." I swallowed. I looked up at the celin, trying to make myself breathe.
"Holy shit, is everyone okay?"
"Hmm?" I asked.
"Eve? Is she and the baby okay?" He knew something was wrong.
"Um, baby is." I swallowed again. I turned my jaw to the right, picking at a piece of lint of my sweat pants. "She was having a lot of... um, difficulities? After the birth because of the car accident. She, um, had a piece of her rib stuck in the side of her lung." I tried to breathe but if I was to breathe, I would probably break down.
"So, is she in the hospital?" He asked, he didn't want to tell me to just spit it out, but I knew he was tired of me beating it around the bush.
"She'sdeadHarry." I rushed out in one sentence. "She lost too much blood in the last three weeks, killed 'er." I sucked my lips in, trying to hold myself together. "I'm- I don't know what to do. It's just me, Ella and the baby." He didn't say anything, just let me vent. "It's cold, ya know? The house. It's, um, it's always hot in here, almost too hot to handle. But now, it's just a big empty house with nothing to hear. Her laugh was the best thing, made me smile even when I wanted to just scream."
"Where are you, Niall?" He asked.
I sniffed. "Far from you guys." I admitted, but I knew he was already tracking my phone call. "I don't know how to do a funearl." I told him.
"It'll be okay, Niall. Just one day at a time." He said and there was a knock on my door. I opened it and Harry, Louis and Liam all stood on my front doorstep. I took the phone away from my ear, starring at them as I hung up Harry's and I call. My bottom lip started to quiver and they walked in, not leaving me anytime to try and pull myself together as they pulled me into a group hug.
I hugged them, sobbing into their shoulders as they rubbed my back. "I miss her!" I said and they said nothing in return. I liked it like that, I like for people to just listen to me and not try to give me advice. I missed these guys, I needed them here and I didn't even have to ask them to come over. I haven't spoken to them since Eve got pregnant, and here they are standing in my kitchen holding me up while I feel my body giving out due to lose of contact with my everything.
