2. The Last Night

I laid on my back staring up at the stars. The cool night breeze was biting at my skin. The fabric underneath my body was soft to the touch.

I took in a deep breath, savoring the smell of the salty ocean water and the cologne of the boy lying next to me.

My left hand was enclosed in his right.

I turned my head to look at him. He was still looking at the stars, unaware of my eyes on his.

"Luke?" He turned his head to look at me. He looked perfectly content. It almost broke my heart how happy he was at that moment.

"Yeah?" I could hear his accent even with such a short word. That accent was music to my ears.

"Can I ask you something?"

He didn't answer, just waited for me to go on.

"Would you still love me if I wasn't here anymore?" I bit my lip, waiting for his answer.

His eyebrows furrowed together.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know," I turned my head back to the heavens, "Like, what if something happened and we couldn't be together anymore?"

I felt his breath tickle my ear as he thought about it.

"If something happened, and one of us left, I would try to get you back,"

"Would you still love me?" I asked as I felt my heart break even more.

"Of course I would. What are you trying to say, Lucy?"

I ignored his question, "You wouldn't be mad? If I just left you?"

I couldn't feel his breath anymore. I looked at him. He was still staring back at me. Hurt in his eyes.

"A-are you breaking up with me?"

I gave him a sad smile, "No,"

He let the breath that he'd been holding out. It hit my face. I smelt the mint gum he'd been chewing earlier that day.

I closed my eyes and brought my lips to his and kissed him softly. I pulled away and looked him in the eyes.

His blue eyes looked back and forth between my green ones looking for a reason to the kiss.

"What was that for?"

I smiled and shrugged my shoulders.

He brushed away the stray hairs lying on my cheek. He let his hand rest there, cupping it softly.

He brought his face to mine. My eyes fluttered shut as I felt his warm breath on my lips. His lips connected with mine, sending a shiver down my spine.

Our lips moved together. He pulled away.

I didn't open my eyes.

"What was that for?"

I felt his shoulder shrug against mine. I smiled and opened my eyes. He was smiling too.

I put my lips back onto his. My hand went to his hair and my fingers tangled in the silky smooth.

He slid one arm under me and his other hand was on the back of my neck.

He pulled me up so that my body was on top of his. My legs went to either side of his torso.

He suddenly flipped us around so that he was on top. His body pressed against mine. I wrapped my arms around him, getting him as close to me as I could.

He slid his tongue into my mouth, making me shiver. He stopped. His chest was moving fast against mine and he looked into my eyes.

"Are you cold?"

It was a little chilly out here. I nodded.

"Do you want to go inside?"

"What about your parents?"

"We'll be quite," He winked.

I giggled, nodding my head again.

He sat up and I sat up with him, giving him a quick peck on the lips. He caught my neck before I could pull away, holding me against him.

He grabbed my thighs and I jumped up, wrapping my legs around his waist. He carried me to the patio door and pushed me against it while he fumbled with the handle. I smiled against his lips.

Once we were inside, he led us towards the stairs.

My back hit the banister as we went to step onto the first step.

"Ow," I mumbled.

"Sorry," He mumbled back.

The house was completely dark and I wondered how he knew where he was going. I wrapped my arms tighter around his neck, hoping that'd we'd be in his room soon. I was afraid of the dark.

Finally, I felt him stop, and I heard a doorknob click as his bedroom door was being opened. He turned his light on and set me gently down onto his bed.

"I'll be right back," He whispered before rushing off into his bathroom.

By the time I kicked off my shoes and laid down on my back, Luke was back. He turned the light off.

I looked up at the light being projected onto the ceiling. It was in the shape of a rocket ship with stars around. It left a dull glow throughout the room so I could still see Luke's face.

I laughed.

"Nothing, it's just, your nightlight," I was smiling.

He was smiling too.

"Did you want me to turn it off?"

I secretly liked the nightlight.

I felt the bed dip as he joined me on the bed.

When he came close to me, I could smell his breath again. Minty. Too minty.

"Did you just brush your teeth?"

"Yes, why?"

As answer, I just kissed him. Tasting his toothpaste. Loving how much of a dork he was.
