DEEP DARK AND DANGEROUS
“Ready?” Jared asked as we headed out the door. He was dropping me off at home because we had school tomorrow and I still hadn’t done my homework and I knew my mom would be mad.
“Yup.” I said grabbing my bag and placing it over my shoulder before waving to his mom. The ride was mostly quiet. We were woken up by Jared’s mom and her new boyfriend. He treated her right and I think I loved him for that. All she needed was someone who cared about her and she finally found it. “I like him.” I said smiling at Jared.
“I know me too. She deserves him.” He said looking at me. “Every girl deserves someone who loves her.” He looked back at the road. I couldn’t help the smile on my face that got even bigger. When we pulled up outside my house there were ambulances, firetrucks and police cars everywhere. I got out leaving my bag in the car and running into the house where I ran into a police officers arms.
“You can’t be in here!” He shouted.
“This is my house!” I shouted back panicked. Jared was right behind me before I saw my mother being brought towards the door on a stretcher. “What happened?” She was unconscious it seemed as if she was dead.
“She overdosed.” My eyes went wide. She knew better than to put her babies life at stake.
“She’s pregnant…” I said trailing off.
“Are you riding with her?” One of the men asked. I nodded my head.
“I’ll call you later. I’m sorry!” I shouted to Jared before I shoved him towards his car before climbing into the back of the ambulance. He kept trying to call me but I never answered. “Are the babies going to be okay?” I asked as the man in the back tried everything he could to wake her up.
“I’m not sure.” Tears brimmed in my eyes. Although I knew I would taking care of the babies most of the time I didn’t want to lose them or my mother. I stayed quiet doing my best to stay out of the way. Once we were there many doctors were around rushing her into a room. I followed for as long as I could before they made me wait in the waiting room. I was the only one here, none of my other family were there. I was in this alone.
“I’m worried.” I paced back and forth in the kitchen.
“Did you call her?” I stopped and looked at my mother. I called, texted, left messages, no answer. My phone suddenly began to ring, it was her.
“Are you okay?” I asked standing as still as possible. I grabbed my keys because I knew she was going to need me.
“No.” She cried into the phone and I was out the door before she got another word out. “I’m all alone. No one else is here and I’m scared.” She said.
“Where are you?” I asked.
“Holy Family.” She answered. “They haven’t told me anything.” She cried more. I was praying for the best but I knew we might not be getting that. We weren’t exactly sure as to why she took so many pills but I never wanted Ryan to see that. I stayed on the phone with her the whole ride there. I weaved in and out of traffic afraid I was going to crash this rental car. I knew my mother would flip her lid. When I got there I barely got the car in park before getting out and running in.
“Ry?” I said aloud when I walked in. She got up and ran into my arms. Her tears instantly wet my shirt.
“Verville Family?” A nurse said and me and Ryan looked over.
“Yes?” I answered knowing she wouldn’t.
“She’s in a deep coma. We are pumping her stomach due to so much alcohol.” I nodded my head.
“What about the twins?” Ryan asked. The nurse looked down at the ground.
“They didn’t make it. I’m so sorry.” I wasn’t exactly sure what to do. I knew I was going to love those kids because we would spend most of our time with them. I was frozen. I had no words to explain what either of us were feeling. “We aren’t sure when she is going to wake up. It could be a week, months, or never. We aren’t sure. We have her on machines to keep her breathing normal. It stops and starts again.” I then realized that we really were alone. “It’s up to you to take her off the machines and let her go.” She said. Ryan looked up with tears streaming down her face.
“No. She’s strong. She can do it. It’s going to hurt like hell but it only does because it matters.” Everything mattered to Ryan that’s why she felt everything so deeply. The nurse left us then to decide what we were going to do. “Where is Paul? And my brother’s? Why are they making me do this alone?” She was still crying. She was only fifteen, it should not be up to her to decide to pull her mother off the machine that is keeping her alive.
“Call them.” I said to her. I refused to let her go through this alone. Of course I would be here to help her but her family should be here too. She picked her phone up and dialled the number.
“Where are you?” She said into the phone finally pulling herself together. “Well you might want to come over to Holy Family hospital.” She said. I sat down and pulled her with me. “Well she overdosed and is in a coma. They aren’t sure for how long. She also lost the twins.” She said breathing to keep the tears from falling down her face. “Okay. See you soon.” She said. As soon as she hung up she grabbed my hand and rested her head on my shoulder. “What am I going to do if she doesn’t survive?” She asked looking up at me.
“I’ll help you. You can live with me. I will not let you go through any of this alone.” I said while kissing her. “I’ll be here. No matter how hard it gets.”
“You can go see her.” We both slowly stood up and walked behind the nurse to the room. “You can touch her just don’t remove any of the wires.” We both sat down in a chair that was facing her.
“She looks so…” Ryan trailed off. “I don’t even know.” I just let her sit and look. I didn’t say a word. It wasn’t my place to talk.
“Visiting hours are over.” A nurse said shaking me awake. Me and Jared had been there all day and we fell asleep on the sofa that was in the room. I shook him awake. My brother’s had left a few hours ago and never came back.
“Let’s go.” I said grabbing my bag and heading out to the car.
“My house?” He asked and I nodded my head. It was pretty late and I was exhausted. “Are you going to school tomorrow?” He asked.
“No. I’ll think I’m going to sleep in a little and then head over to the hospital.” I decided I would miss a few days of school this week and next week to watch her.
“Wait until I come home to go to the hospital okay? I’ll ask my mom to write a note to dismiss me.” He said.
“Thank you. I don’t know what I would do if you weren’t here.” I said holding his hand. “I need you so much.”
“I told you I would be here. No matter what time it was.” I knew if I called him at four a.m and he had to go to school the next day and he was having a bad day before, he would be there to hold me until I fell asleep.
“Will you cuddle me really close?” He laughed. He always made fun of me for wanting to cuddle closer that I was basically sleeping on top of him.
“Of course we can.” As soon as we got home Jared rushed me up the stairs and placed me in his bed. As soon as my head hit the pillow I was out cold.
“What are you doing here?” I asked as I saw Jared sitting at his computer desk with his computer open in front of him.
“My mom said I could stay home with you.” He answered. “So whenever you would like we can go over to the hospital.” He said. I nodded my head before getting up and going to shower. When I got out he was sitting on the toilet.
“What do you think is going to happen?” I asked him after getting dressed and doing my hair.
“I’m not sure, Babe.” He said. There was no definite answer if she was going to wake up or not. “You will decide in time to take her off the machine and see what happens.” He said standing behind me.
“What if she doesn’t survive?” I asked him.
“Then we will celebrate her life the way she would want us to. We will all hold up alcohol and chug it in her honor.” I laughed.
“We aren’t old enough to drink.” I said.
“We drank the other night when we went out to dinner.” He was right about that but neither one of us got trashed.
“We had a little champagne. We didn’t get drunk or anything.” I defended myself. “She get’s smashed.” Of course Jared had taken me to a few parties but neither one of us ever drank. I didn’t because of my mother and he knew that I would be mad at him if he did.
“It would have been fun though.” I rolled my eyes before looking at him.
“I was sober and you still got laid.” He laughed from behind me before kissing the skin that was exposed on my shoulder.
“I just wish the twins had survived.” It was going to weird to not see my mothers stomach growing. It was crazy.
“Can we not talk about that?” I asked.
“Sure. We got a bunch of questions on Youtube. Want to answer some?” He asked.
“Sure.” He printed out some of the questions and we sat there just talking.
“Have you had sex yet?” He said.
“Why do people feel the need to know these things?” I asked into the camera.
“Well the answer is yes.” I smacked him.
“They don’t need to know what we do!” I shouted.
“Why are you shouting?!” He shouted back before we both began laughing.
“Next question.” I said while fixing my hair in the camera.
“How many siblings do you have?” He said. “Well I have an older brother. He is away at college but he is coming home in two weeks.” He answered.
“I have two older brothers. Both are in college.” I said. “My mom was also pregnant with twins but she just recently lost them.” Jared rubbed my back and shut the camera off.
“We can answer the rest later. Lets head over to the hospital.” He helped me stand up before we headed back over to see my mother. I wasn’t sure if I should take her off and let her go or have her fight. There were no signs of her waking up maybe it was for the best.
