The Exchange Student

Tyler, or Ty, Richards is not your average girl. She's been battling a lot of personal problems and she has no real friends. Until Luke shows up. He's the new exchange student- and Ty's neighbor. He's hot, cocky, and a total jerk on the outside. Luke hears a disturbing sound coming from Ty's house, so he decides to investigate. What he discovers is shocks him into reality and their relationship will never be the same again. But maybe that's a good thing.

2. new neighbor

(Ty's POV)

Sure it was hard to adjust to a normal life after what I went through. And to be honest, I'm still not okay, but I am great at pretending to be fine. I'm doing pretty good in school, and I have a few great friends. Most people would expect me to be down in the dumps and depressed, and yeah I have nightmares and sometimes I get scared or sad, but my dad can never get me. He is stuck in jail for twenty to life. I try to reassure myself everyday, and usually I end up being okay, but today was different. I don't know why, but something seems off, and I can't shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen.

"Okay class, the worksheet is due tomorrow. Have a great rest of the day." Ms. A says, smiling as we all get our stuff together and make our ways out the door.

"Bye Ms. A" I smile before I walk out the door. I may hate science, but Ms. A is the coolest science teacher ever.

"Bye Tyler, have a nice day." She looks up from her desk, smiling at me.

Leaving the room, I accidentally bump into someone.

"Hey watch- Oh, heeey Tyty." Josh, most popular guy in school and my neighbor, says.

"Hi Josh." I smile.

"Wanna walk home together? Football practice was canceled." He asks me, the twinkle in his eye melting me. I don't have a crush on him, he has a girlfriend, but he is extremely good looking and really sweet to me.

"Sure, I just need to stop by my lock-" I am cut of by prissy little princess Logan. She is queen of the school and Josh's beloved girlfriend.

"Hey Joshy, wanna come to my place and hang out. My parents aren't home" She ignores me, winking at him. I make a throw up face behind her and Josh laughs. She turns around and sees me, rolling her eyes and looking back at him.

"Of course I do boo." He replies.

"Great, let's go." She smiles, walking away. Josh turns to me and mouths the words 'I'm sorry' before turning around again and following Logan.

"Awesome." I say sarcastically as I walk towards my locker to get my things.

I begin to walk home, looking at all of the trees and flowers along the way. On the left I see a small neighborhood park where my dad used to pretend to be normal with my sister and I so the neighbors don't think anything. I look at the park bench to see a middle aged man sitting, staring at the playing children. He looks up for a split second, making eye contact with me- and that's when my heart stopped. The look in his eyes was not one of a normal man, it was one of lust and rage, just like the way my fathers eyes used to be.

I ran. I ran, and ran, and ran. I didn't look back to the park, just kept running. I don't know how long I had been in this dead sprint, but I was suddenly stopped when I ran into a tall figure. I looked up with watery eyes to meet a pair of blue ones. A sudden feeling of calmness and relaxation fell over me, and before I realized I was staring, a pair of strong arms lifted me off the ground and onto my feet. I snapped into my normal self and saw a beautiful boy standing in front of me. I looked down to notice a broken box with scattered CD's and records on the pavement around us.

"Oh my gosh I am so sorry." I say getting down on my knees starting to pick up the mess I had made.

"You don't need to do that." A thick Australian accent said to me.

I ignored him and continued stacking the CD's.

"Hey, seriously. Can I at least introduce myself before you get on your knees for me?" He says again, in a snarky voice.

I look up at him and he automatically cowers down and starts helping me. We finish and put the various CD's and records back into the box and hot Aussie guy sets it down on the sidewalk.

"Um... I'm Luke." He says, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck, looking down.

"Tyler." I smile, extremely nervous and still a little shaken up by the guy at the park.

"Sorry about, the thing I said." Luke says, still looking down.

"Well it sure was a bold thing to say." I laugh a little and Luke looks up at me, smiling.

"Hey, are you okay. You seemed a little out of it, and your eyes were watery." He asks, suddenly getting worried.

"Um yeah, I'm fine." I say, hoping he'll drop it.

"Oh yeah, 'cuz that face sure paints 'I'm fine' all over." Luke says sarcastically.

"Well I just met you, so what gives you the right to care about me." I say, getting worked up.

"Sorry, sorry, you're right. It's just you seem upset and I was hoping to maybe help you feel better." He says, looking down again. "And I was hoping to get to know you." He mutters, probably hoping I wouldn't hear.

"Oh, I'm sorry I snapped. It's just a long story, but thanks for caring. No one ever does." I whisper the last part, looking at my feet. His eyes shoot up and he grabs my head, making me look back up at him.

"Well I may not know you as well as the next person, but I sure as hell do care, and I will care as much as you need it." He declares.

"Thanks, but it's better for me not to spill my feelings out to a stranger." I say grabbing his hands and putting them back by his side.

He looks at me, his eyes having turned a darker shade of blue then before. "Then let's change that." We stare at each other for a while.

"Well I don't know about you, but this is a first for me." I chuckle, trying to lighten the mood between us.

"Same. This is the first time I have ever met a girl as pretty as you." Luke smiles, kissing me on the cheek.

"Wow, how am I supposed to take that?" I smile too.

"However you want. And if you want to, we can continue this conversation later? I live right there." He says, pointing to the house right next to mine.

"Well hey there, neighbor." I smile, looking back at Luke who was already staring at me.

"Perfect." He laughs, showing off his adorable dimple.

"Lucas, go help your father with the couch." A blonde lady yells from his front porch.

"Duty calls." Luke says sighing.

"Lucas- I like that." I smile to him before turning away. He just grumbles behind me as I walk away.
"Hey Tyler" Luke yells, running back.

"Yes sir." I happily say, turning back to him.

"I'll see you tonight." He says.

"Oh will you now?" I ask, cocking my eyebrows.

"Yes, and don't do that eyebrow thing, it's too cute." He smiles before walking away. I just giggle and turn away, making my way to my house.

"And don't giggle either, that's even cuter." Luke yells before I walk into my house.
