Yeah. I called Ardent back the next day. Now, I was sitting here with my phone pressed to my ear for 5 minutes waiting for him because he was "busy."
"Come in today," he demanded. I knew his eyes were probably glued on some paperwork right now, his glasses on the tip of his nose. Pen in hand. "I have some tests that I would like to do."
"What kind of tests?"
He chuckled. "You'll see when you come." I rolled my eyes. "See you in an hour."
The phone call ended with a click and I sighed.
He hung up on me.
I shoved my phone back into the pocket of my sweat jacket and I plopped back down onto my sofa. My bright red sofa.
My head tilted up towards the ceiling, my eyes gazing at its bleach white color.
Ren's words keep on replaying in my mind, over and over again.
"Congratulations, you are now on Harry Styles's radar."
I usually would have ignored something like that...
But his words are stuck in my mind. He was warning me. Of what though?
I lifted my hand up to my face, only to see my nails covered with fresh hot pink nail polish.
Suddenly, I heard a couple knocks on my front door. I froze.
Who the hell is that?
I slowly sat up, only to hear a few more knocks.
It's probably the annoying ass landlord.
"I'm coming!" I groaned. I pulled up on the zipper of my black sweat jacket and pulled the sleeves over my hands.
The knocks didn't stop.
Knock, after fucking knock.
"I'm coming dammit!"
Times like this is when I wished I had a peephole in my door. But, no I don't. This door is cheap (just like everything else in this apartment).
My hand wrapped around the door handle after unlocking the door. I pulled it open swiftly, ready to see who the persistent knocker was.
A scowl was stamped on my face. His green eyes met mine immediately, a smirk spread across his lips.
"Really?" I shouted, my eyes narrowed. "Were all those knocks necessary?"
He shrugged. Harry ignored my comment, and pushed me aside only to walk into my apartment.
I groaned. "Sure, you can come in Harry." My sarcastic tone caught him off guard as he turned his head to look at me for a second, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "I'm glad you find this funny," I sneered.
I watched as his curious eyes danced around my apartment. I ran past him and begun to pick up the trail of clothes that were on the floor.
"S-Sorry, not all of us have maids like you do."
He smirked. "I can hire one for you if you would like?" I glanced over at him with a scowl on my face. "Fine, fine," he said in surrender. "Just trying to help."
Harry plopped down on my red sofa, his lean and long body spread across it. My eyes take in his black and white dress shirt, with a pair of black pants to go with it.
He frowned. "Why is your couch so lumpy?" He turned his body so that he was now facing me. I knew the scowl on my face was not phasing him at all. He just smiled at me, his eyes locked with mine.
"Well if you don't like it, get the fuck up!"
He shrugged. "Can't you take a joke Olivia?"
I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose with my fingers. "Just tell me why you're here before I freak the hell out," I breathed.
Harry abruptly stood up, smoothing out his crisp dress short. "Well Olivia," he snickered. I rolled my eyes. "We're going out."
"Out?" he mocked. I really want to punch him in the face right now. "Yes, out. Now get some clothes on."
I looked down at what I was wearing right now: a pair of sweats and a sweat jacket. Raking my fingers through my hair, I pursed my lips. "What? You don't like what I'm wearing?"
I guess he doesn't sugar coat things at all. "So what should I wear then, Styles?"
He licked his lips. "Anything is better than that."
"Okay. Give me 5."
He looked down at his watch and smiled. "5 minutes and counting. You better get to moving."
"Sure thing, your highness," I replied, a fake smile on my lips. I spun around and headed back towards my room.
"C'mon Olivia, just try it out."
Harry and I were now standing on the rooftop of my apartment building, the crisp fall air hitting us in every direction.
He was so close to me that I could feel the heat radiating off of his body, his musky cologne filling up my nose.
"I told you no Harry," I sighed, my hands on my hips. His eyes were staring intensely into mine, his face very stoic.
"Why not?" he questioned, his eyebrow raised. He raked his long, and slim fingers through his brown locks. Huffing, he glanced up at the sky. "I'm trying to help you."
"Yes, help you," he repeated, much more emphasized. "And the only way I can do that is to see what you are really capable of."
I shifted uncomfortably and I placed both of my hands over my face.
He wants to know everything about me.
Too much about me.
"I already know that you are a 'jumper'," he added, his fingers making air quotes. "And I want to push you out of your comfort zone." He took a step towards me, which forced his cologne to become even stronger. "I want to find out what pushes your boundaries." Another step closer. "What makes you tick." One more step closer.
My breath was hitched in my throat as my eyes absorbed the image of his face up close.
Pink lips. Piercing green eyes. A sharp jawline and a small amount of stubble on the sides.
My fingers were itching to reach up and touch those brown curls that were messily spread across his head. I could hear my heart beating out of my chest, our labored breaths mixing with one another's.
That's when he took a step backwards, a wave of cool air bringing me back into reality.
"I'm quite comfortable with where we stand right now," I spilled out, my eyes locked on him. My gaze dropped. "I don't trust you enough."
A look of curiosity spread across his face. "And why would that be?" He pinched the bottom of his chin with his fingers, his eyes glancing down at the ground. "I'm just like you. You're just like me. We're both outsiders Olivia. The world does not know what we are capable of."
And I would like to keep it that way.
At that very moment, I knew that he wished he could read my mind. Too bad he couldn't.
"So will you do it?" he charmingly asked once again.
You barely know this guy Liv. What if he's using you? What if-
I puckered my lips before sighing. "Fine."
Damn you Liv. What the hell?
His eyes beamed as I smile spreads across his lips. "Yes?"
"Don't make me repeat myself Styles."
He laughed. "Okay," Harry smiled. "Well at least we made some progress Olivia."
My hands clenched by my sides. "Say Olivia one more time and I'll kick your balls so hard tha-"
"Woah, woah, woah," he chuckled, his hands up defensively. "I want to keep my balls Liv."
I scoffed. "Sure you do."
As does any other member of the male species.
"Now I'm going to push you out of your comfort zone," he explained as he began to pace around me. I felt his eyes on my body, pretty much every inch of it "I want you to 'jump'."
"What's the catch?"
A chuckle escaped his lips. "I want you to take me with you."
My mouth dropped. "No. No. No," I said while shaking my head profusely. "Absolutely not. You can get yourself killed by doing something like that Harry."
He rolled his eyes. "How do you know that Liv?" he said, his voice filled with curiosity. "Have you ever tried doing it before?"
I swallowed the lump that was now in my throat. "Y-Yes."
Harry's eyes lingered across my face, studying me. "With who? A human?"
I was sitting in Ardent's office 3 years ago, a little girl standing beside his desk.
"Liv," he spoke, "This is Amber. She's going to be a part of our experiment today." I watched as the little girl's eyes met mine and she offered me a small smile. Her auburn hair was in ringlets hitting her shoulders, and she was clothed in a pink dress.
"Today, I want you to 'jump'," he added. "But Amber is coming along with you."
My mouth became unusually dry. "But Ardent, I've never done anything like that be-"
He put his hands up, which silenced me immediately. "I know. Which is why you are going to do a test-run."
I looked at the little girl again. She couldn't be more than 8 or 9 years old.
"I'm scared," the little girl said in her mind. I watched as her eyes brimmed with tears.
You can't do this Liv. She's just a little girl.
"I'm sorry Ardent," I said, my eyes still locked on the little girl. "I can't do thi-"
"You can and you will," Ardent grumbled, his jaw angrily clenched. His eyes darted down to the little girl and he smiled. "Now Amber," he cooed. "What is the one place you want to visit the most as of now?"
Ardent nodded and he glanced over at me. "Looks like you will be going to Paris today Ms. Knight."
I sighed in defeat as I walked over to the little girl.
Lord, please make sure she doesn't get hurt. Please.
I grabbed the little girl's hand and I flashed her the most reassuring smile I could give her at that point and time. "You'll be okay Amber. J-Just trust me."
Her blue eyes caught mine for a brief second and then she averted her gaze from my own. "Hold on tight," I told her. I felt her small hand squeeze my own as hard as she could. I closed my eyes and began to focus.
Paris. Paris. Paris.
Tingling sensations began to radiate across my body. I could feel my fingers itching with power. My body temperature was increasing, as I felt a bead of sweat dripping down the side of my face.
And then I felt nothing...
I opened my eyes, only to be kneeling down in the middle of the street in Paris. People were swarming around me in every direction, but they never noticed me. I could control who I wanted to see me.
I heard a series of gasps and screams. I began to franticly look around for Amber.
"Amber?" I shouted out, as I began to push through the crowd.
More screams and gasps filled my ears and I saw people pointing down at the ground. I pushed through the circle of people, only to see what they were all looking at.
There was Amber. On the streets of Paris. Red blood seeping out of her cracked open skull. Her blue eyes were rolled into the back of her head, her skin as white as snow.
I gasped. "Oh my god," I whispered as I ran over to her lifeless corpse.
I couldn't breathe.
I wouldn't breathe. No matter how much I tried to breathe, my lungs wouldn't let me. Nothing was coming in, nothing was coming out. I was speechless.
I killed an innocent girl.
I killed someone.
Tears were streaking my cheeks now, as I stared at the young girl through my tear-filled eyes. "I'm so sorry Amber," I sobbed. "I'm so, so sorry."
She had a family. A loving mother, a loving fath-
I heard the sound of paramedics nearing the scene. Horns blaring, the flashing lights.
They pulled her out of my arms effortlessly, and they placed her lifeless body on a stretcher.
The world began to spin around me, black dots filling my vision. With one last gasp of air, I felt the ground beneath me disappear.
And that's when I blacked out.
I opened my eyes after I realized I had closed them. A single tear rolled down my cheek and I wiped it away with the back of my hand.
I looked up at Harry who's face was filled with sadness, sympathy.
Don't feel sorry for me...
"I'm so sorry. N-No one should ever have to go through something like that."
Oh you think that's bad? You only know part of the story.
"But," he said as he took a step forward. His hand reached out to grab mine, the immediate contact of our skin making a weird feeling spread throughout my body.
That's still weird.
His green eyes met mine. "I don't think it will hurt me."
Just because you say that, doesn't mean it won't.
It was like he could read my mind, because then he said, "Don't come up with anything witty to say back to me," Harry snickered. "Just-" he trailed off. He drew his lip into his mouth, and sighed. "Just trust me Liv. I'll be fine."
"I-I don't know Harry."
"Trust me," he repeated once again, harder this time.
"I'm just like you," his words echoed throughout my mind. I swallowed down my fear and drew in a shaky breath.
He continued to stare at me, until I nodded my head. "Fine, Harry."
He raised his eyebrow at me. "Are you sure?"
"Don't make me regret this," I said, completely ignoring his question.
"I promise," he responded as the corners of his mouth pulled upwards. Suddenly, he took my other hand in his. "Now," he laughed, "take us somewhere."
"Anywhere. Surprise me. "
Well that's helpful Styles. I glared over at him with a small scowl on my face.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. "Hold on Harry," I warned him. I felt his hands tighten around my own...just like that little girl's did.
I didn't want to kill anyone else.
I didn't want to lose h-him.
Surprise him? I didn't even know where we were going, but I felt the tingling in my hands. The wave of warmth that spread across my body. The feeling of the ground beneath me disappearing...
And then there was just darkness.
I grasped her hands as tight as I could as I prepared for the best. But, I was expecting the worst.
Yeah, I know I'm a naysayer.
I watched as her eyes closed, her face immediately relaxing. Her chest rose and fell at a slow pace. Soon, I didn't even see her chest rising anymore. Her pulse was beating as I could feel it by just barely holding her small hands.
Her hands were so warm.
Suddenly, my vision became cloudy as I tried to focus in on her face. I blinked a couple times, but that didn't help. My vision was becoming worse and worse by the second. A bead of sweat ran down the side of my face as I looked around.
We were still on the rooftop from what I could see. The sunlight was shining into my eyes. Bursts of light began to fill my vision.
I tried to open my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Absolutely nothing.
My hands were starting to sweat. They felt clammy against Liv's. One last beam of light hit my eyes, and all I saw was darkness...
I felt a pair of hands on the tops of my shoulders shaking me. Small and fragile hands.
My eyes snapped open and oxygen flew right back into my lungs. I began to cough and I looked up to see Liv studying me with curious eyes.
"Thank god," she breathed out, closing her eyes right after. Relief was washed over her face. "I thought you were dead."
I looked around.
"Where the hell are we?" I asked her, still in a little bit of a daze.
"I don't know," she responded, looking around as well. "I walked around a little, trying to see if I saw a sign of life," she smiled. "But nope. There's nothing." I nodded my head and sighed. "Are you ok-"
I stood up quickly, brushing off the blades of grass that were across my clothes. We were out in the woods. In the middle of nowhere.
"How long was I out?" I unbuttoned the buttons on the wrists of my shirt and I rolled my sleeves up. I caught her eyes gazing at the tattoos that covered up my arms.
She cleared her throat. "Uh, I don't know," she babbled. "5 minutes?"
I felt like I'd been hit by a car, literally. I groaned as I leaned back to stretch. "This isn't what I meant by surprise me Liv," I laughed, looking around once more. "We are out in the middle of nowhere."
Liv scoffed at me, her arms folded across her chest. "Well maybe you should be more specific next time?" she sneered. "At least we aren't in fucking Egypt."
I gave her a thumbs up. "Will do, Olivia."
"You are unbelievable," she growled, her eyes locked with mine. She ran her hand through her hair briskly, and twirled a piece of it around her finger.
Her hair looked so soft. Unreal.
"Earth to Harry?!"
I blinked, only to realize she was about 10 feet away from me now. "S-Sorry." I cleared my throat.
She smirked. "Do you hear that?" she asked, her hands on her hips. I walked over towards Liv and stopped a couple steps away from her.
I brought her here out of all places and she still has the nerve to scream at me! We are all the way in London for Christ's sake!
It was a man's voice. I'm guessing he was talking to his wife. Liv laughed, and I cracked a smile.
"Sounds like fun huh?" she laughed.
Then it hit me.
"Harry?" Liv asked, her voice filling my ears. "W-What's wrong?"
Everything. Everything is wrong.
A chill ran down my spine as I began to look around, panicking. "W-We need to go Liv."
"Why? What's w-"
"Now Liv!" I shouted, my harsh tone catching her off guard. Her eyes widened.
I'm not supposed to be here. I can't be here right now.
"No," she said while shaking her head. "Not until you tell me what the hell is going on Harry!"
The sound of twigs snapping made both of us freeze. I heard the tree branches and leaves rustling and snapping underneath someone's feet. The crunching got louder, and quicker.
More than one person was coming.
I ran over to Liv and pulled her close to me. "It's too late," I muttered underneath my breath.
"We have to get out of here! Now Liv!"
The footsteps were getting closer. She looked up at me with wide eyes. She froze, completely.
"God dammit Liv! If we don't leave now we are going to die! Now take us back!"
Footstep, after footstep.
I watched as she closed her eyes, and slid her hands into mine. I saw him first. His brown hair peeping out of the shadows, a grim look on his face. His brown eyes locked with mine.
Look who's back.
I knew he was smirking, even though I was far away from him.
"Do you know them Harry?" Liv whispered.
I ignored her. "Just get us out of here."
Wrong answer Styles.
In that moment, Luke started sprinting towards us.
Her eyes shut, and she slipped her hands through my own. I held her hands as tight as I could.
He was getting closer. I saw him approaching us.
I started to feel that feeling again. The ground was disappearing beneath my feet. I was getting dizzy. And then in the blink of an eye, everything went black. Just as Luke was reaching out to grab us.
