1. chapter 1

(okay, so here's a quick a/n. the bold and italicized phrases in this story will be other people's thoughts, just an fyi. they aren't the thoughts of the person whose POV it is.

now with that said, happy reading :) xx)

Liv's POV

"Nice to see you again Liv," Doctor Ardent said, his glasses at the tip of his nose, a pen securely held in his right hand.

The glass double doors I just pushed through seconds ago shut, sealing my fate inevitably.

There's no turning back now.

Ardent's eyes scanned me up and down as he continued to acknowledge my presence.

Yeah. I'm back. And yeah, I'm surprised too.

I was on display for him.

I was some experiment of his.

I already knew these things...

I made my way towards his all too familiar wooden desk, pushing those thoughts (which were doubtlessly true) to the back of my mind.

His eyes were glued onto me, practically burning holes through my skin. An awkward silence was among us, the sound of my shoes hitting the tile floor the only thing I could hear.

My eyes scanned around his office. The room still looked the same as it did a year ago, dark black silk curtains blocking every ounce of sunlight from shining in through the windows. The room was dimmed, as a single chandelier hung from the ceiling. Besides that, his office was honestly dreary and dull, which explains why it's so unforgettable. I still felt the same way I did a year ago when walking into this room-threatened and immune.

Immune to the monstrous and inhumane person that I like to call myself.

Tall and lanky Ardent abruptly stood up from his chair and straightened out his white doctor's coat, which he proudly flaunted off every single time I fucking saw him. I was surprised the thing didn't have holes in it by now...

"Please," he said while lifting up a single hand, "sit." His eyes shifted towards the chair as if he was demanding for me to sit down.

I looked into his brown eyes and a smirk formed over his slightly aged face. Ardent didn't look his age at all. The first time I saw him, I was..well..shocked. By what everyone had told me about him, I expected to see some old geezer, grey hair and all. But no. He was the exact opposite actually. Straight and shiny platinum blonde hair covered his head, his flawless pale skin close to matching his white jacket.

I slowly eased into the black leather chair in front of his desk, my eyes never leaving his. I quickly crossed my legs and placed my arms across my chest. "I'm not here for chit chat Ardent," I gritted out, my patience deteriorating by the minute.

Great. I just got here and I'm already annoyed.

He raked his long skinny fingers through his hair, a haughty sigh escaping his lips seconds later. "I know you aren't Liv," he responded, keeping his everlasting cool and controlled demeanor. "You don't beat around the bush dear. I've gotten to know you quite too well."

"I thought our goal was to make me as normal as possible," I remarked. He needed to cut the bullshit, and just get to the point. "But, you called me in here today."

He smirked in amusement. "You aren't normal my dear. You never have been"--he smiled--"...and you never will be." Ardent laced his fingers together and leaned slightly over his desk. "I think you should try to embrace your unique qualities once again."

He quickly spun around in his office chair only to turn back around with two glasses of water in hand. The cups are placed right on top of his wooden desk, and I watch as he lifts his glass up to his lips. "Water?" he asked, his eyebrow slightly raised.

He's insane if he actually thought I was going to drink that shit. I could already see shit floating around in it...which doesn't surprise me. "This crap again?" I muttered, taking the glass in my hand and holding up towards the small light in his office. A grimace formed over my lips. "If we're going to do this again, I don't want to be drugged," I grumbled. "I want to feel all of it. Every single bit of it." His eyebrow was arched now as he listened to my argument. "I'll tell you everything," I bargained, my eyes still on the floating substances in the clear glass. "No more secrets."

I placed the glass back down on the table and awaited for his response. He said nothing, but he simply picked the glass up and set it down somewhere else. "Okay Ms. Knight." He drew in a breath, his eyes still locked with mine. "Well, let's begin shall we." He reached underneath his desk and pulled out is dingy yellow notepad which he's had ever since I started seeing him.

The sound of the clock ticking on a nearby wall filled my ears as I stared at the man blankly.

Tick, tick, tick.

My hands were shaking slightly as I was awaiting for him to start listing off his thousands of questions. I never understood why he did that. He expected me to answer every single question he fired at me. I may not be normal...but I am pretty sure that I have the same memory capacity as other human beings do.

He grabbed his pen and starting writing away, but not before putting the date in the top right corner of the paper in fine black ink. That's a part of his routine.

"Why are you here?"

Let the games begin...

"Because you wanted me to be."

He pinched the bridge of his nose with two fingers. "No," he retorts. His lips are in a thin line, his face emotionless. "Why are you really here? You could have skipped this session just like the others. I know you aren't a changed woman Ms. Knight, even if it has been a year or so since I've seen you last."

Blah, blah, blah.

"Plus, I still can't read your mind like you can read mine Ms. Knight," he added rather sharply. "So could you elaborate please? Tell me why you're really here?"

My eyes began to wander across the room, my mind soaking in every inch of the place I used to practically live in. "Well," I hissed. His hand tightened around the pen as he continued to write away.

"Still hostile as ever."

His multiple thoughts began to fill my mind and I closed my eyes in annoyance.

Well, seems like someone is still a dick.

"I wanted to tell you that your therapy...worked," I choked. His eyes lifted up from his notepad and his hand stopped moving across the paper.

"How many fucking times are you going to tell me to elaborate?"

"As many as it takes."

See, he's always going to be a little prick.

I sighed before gathering my straight blond hair into one hand and throwing it over my shoulder. "I don't see them anymore," I whispered.

You know who.

"Mom," I continued, despite the urge to say something witty. "Dad...Ryan."

His pen started to move again.

"Deceased members of family are no longer in subject's dreams."

"Do you still dream of that night?" he questioned, his eyes still stuck to his paper.

Is that even a question?

"Of course. I don't think I would ever be able to forget that night." I rolled my eyes at the fact that he thought I would just magically forget that terrible night 5 years ago...

I don't believe anyone would be able to forget something like that...

"Well that's why I'm here Ms. Knight," he remarked in all seriousness. "To help you recover from that traumatic event...as well as other things."

I nodded my head ever so slowly.

Yeah...other things for sure.

His pen began to move smoothly across his notepad again. I looked down at my fingernails which were covered with chipped black nail polish. Ew.

"How have you been Ardent?" I asked him, a smirk playing across my lips.

There's nothing wrong with trying to make conversation right?

"This appointment isn't for me Ms. Knight. It's for you," he reprimanded. "Now continue."

I rolled my eyes at him and leaned forward, only to place my weight on the palm of my hand as I rested my elbow on my leg. "What do you want me to do?"

"Jump," he simply replied, his eyes still trained on his notebook.

A wave of uneasiness spread throughout my body. "Jump?" I asked, a lump in my throat. "I-It's been a while Ar-"

"Do it," he persisted. "I've trained you for the past few years. I think you can do something as simple as 'jumping'," he added, his fingers creating air quotes.

"Randomly? Or-"

Ardent shrugged his shoulders and waved me on.

I let out a sigh before closing my eyes. All I saw was darkness, and I let it consume me. I felt my face relax and it filled with concentration. I tried to envision a place...a random place. A set of chills ran through my body and I knew it worked.

I was somewhere else.

I slowly opened my eyes and glanced around. I was in a room. Alone. A dark shade of blue covered the walls, black furniture placed in various locations. Glass could be found all across the room.

Glass vases. Glass lamps. Glass, glass, glass.

How fancy.

A already lit fireplace was nearby and I found myself walking towards it. My fingers danced along the soft leather covering the large black couch in the room. As I got closer and closer, the heat from the fireplace began to surround me in a comforting embrace. I-It was nice. Comforting.

"Who's there?" Ardent asked.

"No one," I mumbled, while continuing to walk through the house. Someone's here. I can sense it. But they won't see me anyways. No one ever has...at least not while I'm in this state.

I was standing directly in front of the fire now, and I watched as the bright orange flames danced in the fireplace. Something was off...in this house. I looked around quickly as a set of chills ran through my body. My small and delicate fingers reached out to touch the hot flames, but before I could I felt a presence behind me.

"Who the hell are you?"

I quickly turned around only to be met by a pair of eyes. The person was hidden by the shadows, as it was quite dark in the room. They took a few steps forward and my jaw practically dropped to the ground as I took in the sight in front of me.

I saw a guy. Not that old...maybe 24? Curly brown hair covered his head and stopped at the tops of his shoulders. A white loose dress shirt with a few of the buttons undone revealed trails of black ink making their way down his tattooed torso.

Ink, ink, and more ink.

Black skinny jeans covered his legs, matched with a pair of black boots. He took a few steps towards me and my eyes wandered across his both muscular and tanned body, drinking in every ounce of his good looks.

As he got closer, I noticed his striking bright green eyes and perfectly sculpted face. I inhaled sharply and bit my lip as he neared me some more. The light from the fire illuminated his rosy pink lips, which were thinned in concentration.

"H-How can you see me?" I muttered, taking a few steps backwards. I awaited a reaction from the man. But he just stood there, his eyes analyzing me. I tried to ignore his glare and focus in on his thoughts.

I needed to get inside his head.

As I stared into his green eyes, waiting for his thoughts to enter my mind, out of nowhere a sharp pain erupted throughout my head. Ah, fuck. A painful hiss escaped my lips and my hands found their way to the sides of my head.

"Why the hell are you in my house?" he boldly retorted, venom laced on each word. The immense pain in my head continued, and I could feel the man's scorching gaze still on me. "And then you tried to get into my head?" His jaw was clenched in anger, his green eyes ablaze. "Who the hell do you think you are?"

What the hell is he doing to me?

I lifted up my hand, only to have a ball of energy form in my hands. "Don't get any closer," I warned him through clenched teeth, through the pain. "I-I don't want to hurt you."

He hadn't blinked yet, his harsh gaze still on me. The pain disappeared immediately once he blinked, and a delectable laugh escaped his lips. Two big dimples were carved in his cheeks as he smirked, and I wanted to melt right there. "How cute."

That smirk soon disappeared when suddenly I was slammed up against a wall. I felt something wrap around my throat.

I didn't even have the chance to scream. I looked in front of me to find the man standing about 5 feet away from me, his arm extended in the air with his hand halfway open. What the hell?

"W-What?" I gasped, the air being crushed from my throat by his strong hand. My heart began to race as the hold on my throat got even more constricting.

I could have screamed for Ardent to bring me back...but I didn't.

The man began to walk towards me, his once bright green eyes looked almost quite daunting now. I watched as his hand closed slower and slower, the blood throughout my entire body becoming numb. The silver rings and few tattoos delicately drawn across his large knuckles and fingers didn't fail to capture my attention at all. His face was emotionless, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration. The man's tongued darted out from between his lips, and slightly dabbed across his lips.

"Now I'm going to ask you one more time. Who are you, and what the hell are you doing in my house?"

My eyes widened as his deep and enthralling voice filled my ears, sending a chill down my spine. A British accent was apparent in his delectable voice.

His lips didn't move an inch...

No. He can't be! He's a tel-

I stared at the guy as he became even more enraged, my silence destroying his patience by the second. His cheeks were now a light red as his grip on my throat continued to be as constricting as ever.

"Please let me go," I struggled to breathe out. My eyes were locked with his as I silently pleaded for him to release me. An angry sigh escaped his lips before he abruptly closed his hand. I fell to the ground immediately, air thankfully rushing back into my lungs.

A series of coughs escaped my lips, and I felt the blood starting to rush throughout my body again. I looked up, expecting for his attention to be directed towards me. But he was turned around, his hands placed on his hips. His large hand was rubbing his sharp jawline, and the sight was something so beautiful that everyone needed to see it. I took the time to admire his tall and confident stance. From here, I could smell his intoxicating cologne. Sweet Jesus.

"Thank you," I said rather calm, while standing up slowly and straightening the black t-shirt and jeans covering my body. A sigh escaped my lips as I tried to calm down my hormonal thoughts as he still stood in front of me.

"I should have you arrested for trespassing," he grumbled in annoyance. "Why are you here?" he asked once more, but this time aloud and more demanding.

His eyes were still not on me, and I was silently pleading for him to turn around and give me some sort of attention.

"I don't know," I replied honestly with the slightest shrug of my shoulders. "You tell me."

I noticed that he was about to finally turn around, and I panicked. So I opened and closed my eyes again.

When I reopened them, I was blinded for a few seconds before I realized that I was back at Dr. Ardent's dreary office. I found myself nervously looking around frantically because...that had never happened before.

How could he s-see me? No one had ever seen me before, let alone have a full conversation with me...especially not telepathically.

"Liv?" Ardent asked curiously as his eyes scanned my now disheveled features. I felt a bead of sweat drip down the side of my face and I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand.

"I'm fine," I hiccuped.

That was a lie. I wasn't fine. I wasn't even close to being fine.

"What happened?"

I quickly arose out of my chair before swiping my hair to one side of my body. Ardent raised his eyebrow at me while tapping his pen on his desk impatiently.

He wanted a answer, but he wasn't going to get one. Not today at least.

"Until next time Ardent," I said while drawing in a shaky breath.

"Wait Ms. Knight! We aren't finished with our session yet!"

Oh yes the hell we are.

I walked out the door as fast as I could and closed it before another word could be said. Without hesitation, I practically ran down the nearby 3 flights of steps before making it to the main floor of the research facility. As soon as I exited the front doors, a weight was lifted off my chest.

Breathe Liv. Breathe.

The thoughts of the many people of the business world around me filled my ears.

"Of course I love you!"

"Those papers need to be completed by 6."

"You're fired."

Thoughts like those were racing throughout my mind, and they weren't even my own. I placed my hands over my ears and shut my eyes for a brief second.

Shut up. Shut up.

I silently pleaded for the noise to stop...and after a few seconds, I got my wish. The voices stopped and I opened my eyes slowly, only to be faced with a series of stares and strange looks.

Before I could become even more humiliatedI rushed over to my black Audi and unlocked it before sliding down in the driver's seat. My finger pressed the lock button on the door once I was safely inside, and I rested my head against the steering wheel.

Questions began to scatter across my mind.

W-Who was that guy? And how could he communicate with me telepathically?

He knew I heard him.

The look on his face confirmed it.

I raked my fingers through my hair, a sigh escaping my lips. "He can't be like me. No way."

My fingers began to tap on the leather surrounding the steering wheel of my car.

I was the only one.

I'm the only one left.

It was only me and my dad...that I know of.

Get these ridiculous thoughts out of your head Liv.

I massaged my temples lightly as my head began to throb. I didn't need this news right now that's for sure. So I tried my hardest to push those thoughts to the back of my mind. But the same questions popped up over and over again as I drove home.

Who was he?
