Ma Belle [A Short Story]

Every Christmas, Annabelle's family goes to Paris to meet up with her cousins.
The first year, she met Edgar. He was oh-so charming, so swoon-worthy, he was the one, she thought. As years go by, things change. Hearts get broken. Days grew longer. Everything was different.

This was the last time she was ever going to step foot at Paris before she goes off to college. Will things go back to where it belong before midnight strikes?

2. Chapter two

December 24, 23:00, 2011

"Will you stop fussing? We're here, now calm down." Dad grumbled, I've been begging him to come to the festival for the past couple of days but he insisted we all have a proper family dinner before coming again. I hoped Edgar wouldn't mind my late arrival and I sure hope he didn't think I'd turned him down the other day.

The market was twice as packed as it was the day I visited, considering it's an hour to Christmas, many people were still out shopping for their loved ones, carrying shopping bags around and wrapping gifts. I was one looking forward to the season if Edgar were around.

"Um, mind if I walk around? I, uh... I lost something when I came here earlier." I mumbled as I walked away. They shot back a look.

"You were here a few days ago?" Aw snap.

"Y-yeah... The kids wanted to come and take a look." I bit my bottom lip, hoping they'd understand.

"Belle met a guy!" Tommy blurted, I shot him a glare and he cackled loudly.

"Yeah! They were laughing and I caught her blushing!" Angelina giggled, Howard was by her side laughing together.

"Belle has a boyfriend!" They yelled, laughing and skipping around. Mom and dad were shaking their heads and shooting me a disapproving look.

"Mom, dad, it isn't what you think.. I.. Dropped my earrings a few days ago and I had to look for it. They were from a friend, I have to find it." I murmured, hoping they'd finally let me go.

"Fine, meet us back here in about an hour. There's the huge clock that'll chime when it strikes at twelve, be back by then.

I walked off, eager to find Edgar.

I made my way through the painting isle where dozens of artists had people lining up to buy odd and unique pictures, most consists of beautiful horizons and caricatures.

As I turned around, a crimson red rose was right under my nose.

"Oof! Edgar!" I laughed, he chuckled and handed me the flower.

"For you, since you're the loveliest bell amongst all of Paris." He whispered in my ear. There was a silent 's' when he said the word Paris, it made me shiver.

"Come, let us sit. Have you eaten?"

"Um, yes I have. Listen, I'm sorry for the absence a few days ago. I wasn't able to come and I had to have-"

"No worries, I was... Busy anyway, let us take a sit." He sat on a patch of grass and patted a spot next to him. I smiled intently at him and gladly took the seat.

"I know it's only been a few days.." He said, looking down at me. He was way taller than I am, even as we sat he had to tilt his head down to meet my eyes.

"But I haven't stopped thinking of you... The bell and everything. I just. That was our spark." He said, caressing my cheeks with the back of his knuckles.

"I know, me too." I whispered, leaning in closer.

"Belle.." He whispered back, standing up, avoiding the embarrassing act I was about to do.

"Oh, um.. Right." He offered a hand and we stood up, he guided me to his booth and we sat.

"So, anything inspiring to draw lately?" I inquired, placing both hands under my chin to give myself a better look of his facial structures. He's got bristles of hair decorating his lower chin. Wew.

"Not quite," He sighed, a twinge of pain stabbed through me and I forced a smile.

"Oh, that's too bad." He looked up at me and blinked slowly.. Observing me.

"Oh, you must know. My name is Annabelle. Belle's for short." He nodded, letting out a throaty chuckle.

"Everything about you is just beautiful hm?" He laughed, I blushed at the remark and looked away.

"Hey now, don't go all shy on me," He brought two fingers around my chin and turned it around so I could look straight at him.

"You're not going to be here for long, are you?" He asked, his eyebrows arched as he waited for an answer.

"N-no... i'm afraid. I leave the first thing tomorrow." He closed his eyes shut and ran a hand through his brown hair.

"Well, in that case, i'm giving you a night to remember." He smiled. The giant clock tower chimed, loud ringing bells jingled across the sky - five minutes to Christmas.

"Come on, I have to meet up with my family." I pulled him and he followed me behind. Many people were gathering by the Christmas tree, cheering and jostling.

"Belle! You're here! And you brought a friend!" My mum cheered, she dragged the two of us to the front and we did a countdown together.

"Sorry, I think i scratched you, are you hurt?" I panted.

"No, you didn't. Don't worry."

"I can barely breathe!" I gasped, leaning in closer to Edgar as people squeezed in.

"TWO!" Edgar looked down at me and smiled. Before I could hear the cheer of the final countdown, Edgar's hands were on my waist, and his lips were pressed against mine.
