Across the Map

Masami Kimiko has just been plucked up from her awesome school in Japan and plopped down in a new, strange school in the U.S.A. She has never learned a bit of English, and she is extremely sad and confused. Can she manage to survive in the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Author's note: This story is based off of real life events that happened in my school. A girl came from China and had never taken a really good English class. We all had to help and guide her. It was actually very fun!

1. The News

Beep! Beep! Be-  I rolled over and shut off my alarm clock.  Yawning, I slowly got out of bed and put on my clothes.

"Masami!" my mother yelled from the first floor.

"Wo laile!"  I replied in Chinese.  It meant that I was coming.  I scrambled to brush my teeth and do my hair.  I tried pulling it into a bun.  Sighing in relief that my hair was cooperating that day, I ran down the stairs to say goodbye to my mother and grab my lunch and a snack for the bus.  I hugged her and dashed out the door just as the bus pulled up to my driveway.

"Zao an!" I greeted the driver, bidding him a good morning.

When we arrived at my school, I ran in as fast as I could.  We had just returned from our break, and I really missed my friends.

"Cho!" I shouted spotting one of them.

"Masami!" she exclaimed.  We ran over to each other and started talking quickly about our vacation.  As we were having our conversation, one of my other friends said my name and ran up to me and Cho.

"Nin hao, Guang!" I cried.  Together we all walked up to our classes.

"Yingjie wo de ke jian xiuxi women keyi tanlun geng duo," I said to them and headed to my homeroom.  I told them to meet me at recess so we could talk more.

"Hao!" said together and did the same.  They told me that they would do that.
