Chapter 1

Here's what you need to know about me:

I have long fiery red hair, my skin is white as snow and looks like porcelain, my eyes hazel brown, I have a nose piercing that's a white diamond, I'm somewhat slim in figure and I like to wear heals.

I like a bit of punk and rock, but my guilty pleasure is the soft sided pop. I'm kind of a rebel, I like to sleep late and my name is Reagan James.

I park in my usual spot just outside Starbucks, which is where I work. The wind is cold against my skin, everything looks so vacant and dark. We are in the beginning of December and it's only going to get colder. The snow will probably come soon.

As I reach the entrance my phone buzzes in my pocket. ‘Yes?’ I answer sternly opening the door. ‘Hi honey it's mummy, I just wanted to make sure you still would be coming over for dinner?’ Her voice sounds nervous and distant.

We haven't really talked much recently, it is probably because I moved out of the house and into my own apartment four months ago. ‘Yep, I'm still coming mom, don't worry’ I smack the phone back in my pocket and enter Starbucks.

‘Good afternoon Reagan’ standing at the counter smiling as always is my boss Paige; she's quite young and not boring and annoying like most bosses. ‘Hi Paige’ I say lunging my purse into the back of the staff room. ‘Ouch!’ Out comes my best friend Devon ‘What the hell Reagan?’

‘Oops, sorry Dev, I didn't see you’ I chuckle lightly fastening my name tag. ‘Damn right you didn't, I forgive you, I can't be mad at you’ she laughs and hugs me ‘Let’s get to work girls’ Paige orders as she pushes us apart.

Work is always a joy, I get to meet new people everyday and have a good time with my colleagues. Working here is probably the best thing I've ever done.

I work as much as I can, which is why I decided four months ago to move to my own place. I finally had the money, and I'd found the perfect place. Working a lot keeps my mind off of things, things I don't necessarily enjoy thinking about. It keeps me distracted and I worry less about different things. Such as my mother.

‘Done for today girls’ Paige says as I lock the safe box. I reach out for a cloth but Paige slaps my hand away ‘Enough work, Reagan.. You work too much. Even though you're always late, I can't fire you since you're the most hardworking employee we have and the customers always love you. But please, go home now and relax. I'll see you tomorrow!’ Ouch, that hurt even though she is right.

‘Okay, thanks Paige.. See you tomorrow’ I tiredly wander off to my car, unlocking it and getting in. I shut the door tightly. I bury my head in my hands; tears start falling down my cheeks ‘Keep it together Reagan!’

I wipe away the tears and start the car. I am so tired, but I really don't want to go to dinner at my mom’s house, I hate it there. I would rather have enjoyed working at Starbucks all night, just to get away from my mother.

I make my way to her house, but as I stop the car, I can't move my legs it's like they're stuck. I sit in the car for several minutes before gathering up the courage to actually go up to the house.

The house lies upon a small hill, it's quite big as to my mother married some rich idiot she met last year. He's more the reason I never show up at the house unless I'm invited. He's so rude to me, and he actually treats my mother like crap but she can't see it.

I bet he cheats on my mother every Saturday and Sunday where he always seems to be so busy. I inhale deeply as I push the door bell. ‘Hi Reagan’ mom greets me opening the door. ‘Hi mom. Where's George?’ I step inside and notice something is different

‘He’s not here’ mom says ‘Yes you finally dumped him!’ I blurt, silly me sometimes I have no filter whatsoever. ‘Reagan!’ She cries sternly ‘He’s at a meeting’.

‘Son of a..’ Mom cuts me off ‘Reagan Evelyn James! Language’. I try to hide my disappointment ‘Oh sorry mom, I was just kidding’ I throw myself at the nearest couch taking off my shoes.

‘Just got off from work?’ Mom grabs my shoes and puts them in the hallway. ‘Yep’ I nod excitedly. ‘Well Reagan, it's just gonna be you and me for dinner’ she slightly smiles inviting me over to the dinner table. Yes! Finally, dinner without that piece of s**t. Oops language.. What the hell I don't care, I loathe him!

‘So.. How was work?’ Mom asks while serving me some mash potatoes, vegetables and beef. ‘It was good’ I stuff my face with the food, which is awesome by the way. I realize I'm quite hungry and fill my mouth with some more mash.

‘Thanks for dinner mom’ I say hugging her for the first time, in months. ‘You’re welcome honey, please come again soon’ she smiles and opens the door. ‘Yeah, only if that crap head George isn't here’ I mumble quietly ‘What was that?’

‘Nothing mom, I'll see you’ I walk outside, into to the cold and dark night. I drive home to my apartment. As soon as I reach my bed, I'm out cold.
