The moment me, Grace and Leah got outside, we were surrounded by the whole class. Everyone wanted to get a look at my broomstick. Even Natalia seemed impressed. Professor Fimble came over to see what all the fuss was about.
'You do know that you're not allowed your own broomstick, Miss Finnigan.' Fimble said when she saw my broomstick.
'I know. But I told my mum that I had flying lesson after lunch and she must have bought it for me.'
'Very well. It looks like you'll have to keep it. Rest of you; take a broomstick and line up!'
I went with Grace and Leah so they could get a broomstick. Afterwards, we lined up. Since the Ravenclaws were on one side and the Hufflepuffs were on the other, I ended up being opposite Salucci. She looked at my her own broomstick, then at mine.
Probably comparing. I thought.
'I want you to stand to the left hand side of your broom and say up.' I heard Fimble say.
With the rest of the class, I stood on the left side. Everyone held their hand over there broom and began to say 'up.' I did the same.
'Up!' to my surprise the broomstick flew into my hand. As I waited for everyone else, I saw Natalia's broomstick hit her nose.
She deserved that. I thought, smiling.
Everyone had their broomstick in their hand but Salucci. After a million 'up's', it finally flew into her hand.
'Now that everyone's got hold of their broom,' Fimble continued. 'I want you to grip it tightly then lift up from the ground, hover, learn forward, then touch back down. We'll start with the beginning of the Hufflepuff line and then we'll go in a zig-zag downwards.'
As Fimble said, we started with the first Hufflepuff. Finally it was my turn. Everyone was watching. I put my leg over my broom and kicked off the ground. I didn't go that high, but I seemed to go higher than others. I was so surprised at how easy it was. I wanted to stay up there longer but something told me I should come back down. When I floated back down, I landed lightly on the ground.
I think I've found something I'm actually good at.
It was then Salucci's turn. She didn't do anything. I mouthed 'go on' but I don't think she caught it.
'Well, aren't you going to do anything?' Fimble asked. I could hear the frustrated tone raising in her voice.
Salucci put her leg over the broom, just as she was about to kick off she said-
I was really shocked at this. Salucci was one of those people who would do anything just to be better than everyone else. I thought after watching me do it, she'd want to do it better.
Oh, no. I'm making her sound like Natalia. I thought. Maybe all purebloods are like that, though. I reasurred myself.
I was so preoccupied with my own thoughts that I didn't hear what Fimble had said.
Next thing I knew, Salucci was sitting on the grass.
Maybe she's got some phobia of broomsticks or something. I thought.
The rest of the class carried on flying into the air.
