I was on and off the phone with buyers, writers, tv stations, radio stations…you name it, I was speaking with them. It was moments like this I wish I kept my previous job as assistant but if this was going to work out, it would be one of the best opportunities I would ever have so I was going to make the best of it.
“Bethany, phone call, line four.” Jo’s voice came over the intercom.
“This is Bethany.”
“Jacob…how are you?!”
“I don't know. How are you? I heard the good news from mom and dad.”
“I'm beyond stressed to be honest with you but I definitely love it already. And the plus side is that I'll have more spare time so I can come visit you.”
“Yeah, I don’t know.” Jacob sighed.
“What don't you know?”
“You barely call or visit…you have a bigger job now. I just feel like it means I'll see you less.” I sighed, looking down at my desk and all the paperwork scattered all over it.
“Do you wanna come here? Stay with me for a little bit?”
“I can't. The doctors think I need constant supervision and with your busy schedule you wouldn't be able to do that. And I most certainly don't wanna be at work with you. You'd still be too busy for me.”
“Well what if I got you a stay at home nurse?”
“Wouldn't the point of me coming to spend time with you?” Tears started filling my eyes, knowing he had a very valid point. I have been so wrapped up in my job and keeping my bills paid, that I didn't even pay attention to my own family or my own best friend.
“You're right.” I whispered.
“Soon though?” Jacob asked.
“Very soon guppie; very soon.” We hung up and I stared at the phone for what felt like hours before there was a knock on my door. “Come in.”
“Bethany?” I looked up and saw Anastasia coming into my office.
“Excuse me? I can't. I have to keep my eyes on this project, the runway show is tomorrow, I still have buyers to get in contact with…”
“Bethany…” Anastasia said, cutting me off. “You do have an assistant with more qualifications and training who can do this for you.” I have smiled and nodded.
“Go home; take a long weekend. Jo and I will make sure everything is covered. Besides, I need to conduct interviews again.”
“For what?” I asked, confused.
“I need a new assistant, a paid intern for our money management department, you do remember is talking about this, right?” I half smiled. “What?”
“I think I may have someone for you.” Anastasia nodded.
“For which department?”
“I might have someone for the money management department.”
“Okay; let me know when you come back Monday. Now please, leave.”
“Can I come back for the runway show at least? Walk with you? It's always been a dream of mine…” Anastasia laughed and smiled.
“Yes, but that's it. After the runway show, you take the rest of the weekend.”
“Yes ma'am. I'll see you tomorrow night.” I gathered my stuff up and walked out without saying goodbye to anyone. I had plans to make; friendships to mend.
“Where did Bethany go?” I asked when Jo walked into the room.
“She took the rest of the week off.”
“Jacob called and Anastasia overheard and basically sent her home.”
“So basically I won't see her again?” I asked slowly.
“From the looks of it, probably not. You'll be done here after tomorrow night.” Jo said, shrugging.
“I'll still be here for another week and a half though; I mean here in the city.”
“And she's going to be here.” Jo shrugged and turned around. “All looks good here guys.” She nodded at me and walked out. I sighed, not sure what to do. A part of me wanted to call her, see her again but another part of me just wanted to let her go. We both led busy, totally different lives and there was no way our friendship would ever last…just based off that.
“Carrie stop playing games with me…you know who this is…”
“What do you want Bethany?”
“I want you to come live with me.”
“I'm still in school. I'm working part time. There's no way I can move out there. Plus, you're whole new life doesn't involve me. You're too busy for me. You made that clear. And now your running a company? Congratulations by the way. The news is a good way to find out that your supposed best friend had something good happen to her; nice to know she couldn't tell me herself.”
“Carrie come on…please? There's a paid internship opening at my company. For accounting; money management, whatever you wanna call it…”
“What part of I'm still in school don't you get? And plus trying to get me a job at your company? You can snap your fingers and make that happen.”
“Okay, yes, I can do that but this isn't for my portion. This is Anastasia’s portion of the company. I don't really have a huge say in it.”
“Well I'm still in school.” Carrie said, almost as if she was scrapping for excuses.
“Please? Come up tonight and tomorrow at least talk to Anastasia and give me a chance to make up for a lot of lost time.” Carrie went quiet as if she was trying to find a reason to say no.
“Okay fine. But it doesn't mean I'll take this internship, or accept any apology.”
“I'll see you in a couple hours.” I hung up the phone and walked into my apartment. I started cleaning up, trying to waste some time before Carrie showed up.
A couple hours later I was sitting on my couch, watching The Intern with some tea, cuddled up in a blanket. However I kept catching myself staring at the clock, waiting for Carrie to ring the bell and say she was here.
Just as I was about to give up hope that she was coming, thinking she stood me up, the bell rang. I got up and buzzed down.
“Who is it?”
“Carrie you prick; were you expecting anyone else?” I laughed and rung her up. I opened the door and stood in the doorway, waiting for her.
“Hey there!” I said happily when I saw her walking up to me.
“Hey; what's up?” She had an overnight bag with her but that was all.
“Nothing; but we're about to be doing something!”
“What are we doing?”
“We have to go shopping; we have a major event tomorrow that I'm taking you to and we need to be dressed up.”
“Where are we going?” Carrie asked, interest peaked.
“A fashion show.” Carrie whale smiled, trying to hide it.
“Okay, let's do it.” I threw on some shoes, grabbed my purse and keys, and we were on our way.
“So how is my family?” I asked.
“Jacobs depressed, Matthews barely passing high school, your parents are barely making it…you haven't talked to them?” Carrie said later, over dinner.
“Not too much; I wish I did more but I've been a shitty sister and daughter and haven't really called or visited.”
“Hey, it'll be okay. You were able to work stuff out with me; why not with them?”
“I don't know.” I shrugged. “It's different when it's family I guess.”
“Hey, you'll figure it out.” Carrie said reassuringly.
“So…I have news.”
“What kind of news?”
“I met Harry.”
“Are you serious?!” Carrie said, getting intrigued.
“Yeah; he's in a boy band…he's modeling for our company for our fist male line.”
“Damn…wow. How's that going?”
“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.
“What do you mean, what do I mean? Are you guys together, friends, did it end up not working out?”
“No…I don't know. He's really nice, sweet…but we've only hung out a few times. Not much though. I only met him a few days ago.”
“So…I'm confused?” Carrie said slowly.
“I don't know. I just wanted to tell you.” Carrie started smirking.
“You wanted my advice on what to do.” I rolled my eyes and half smiled.
“Well girl, you'll get it; after I meet him tomorrow.” I shook my head.
“Okay, fine. So what's new with you?”
“Well I started sort of seeing someone at college.”
“What's his name?”
“His name is Jared. He's alright for a college guy. It hasn't really gone too far. But he actually lives here in the city and comes here for the weekends. Maybe if I decide to stay with you, you can meet him this weekend.”
“I'm totally down for that.” I smiled, happy that things were slowly being buried.
