Chapter 10: Nice To See...
"Okay ACTION!" David shouted.
"Alexis was in the living room when I left. She refused to go to bed until you came home." Henry said the instant we stepped inside the door. From a quick look in the mirror it's obvious I've just been a five hour plane ride, my hair's slightly messy, dark circles are under my eyes and I just look down right exhausted.
"I'm going to bed." He continued. "Try and get some sleep Ry."
"No promises" I called after him as he jogged up the stairs and disappeared from sight. The door to the living room is slightly open, blue light from the paused TV glowing through to the hallway where I drop my duffel bag and kick off my shoes, abandoning my jacket on the stairs I proceed to the living room.
I can't help but crack a smile at the sight, Alex is curled up on the overly large sofa wearing some leggings and one of my old tee shirts that I never wear anymore. Her hair's pulled back into a ponytail showing her (always) make-up free face. She's asleep but as I crouch down in front of her one eye flickers open to reveal her bright green pupils.
"Hey." She mumbles tiredly adding a yawn before throwing a hand over my mouth to yawn into it instead of the air.
"Hey Alex" I chuckled leaning over to kiss her cheek. "Henry told me you waited up for me."
"Yeah." She nodded. "I don't want to sleep by myself tonight."
I frowned at her before taking a breath. "Nightmares again?" I asked.
Alexis only nodded before I enclosed her in a much overdue hug. I love my sister, much more than any brother would because she's pretty much the only family left. She's the only one who's gone through the same thing that I have and she's the only one that doesn't expect anything from me. Just occasional nights when we both get nightmares will we expect something, a hug. That's all and reassuring words to put us back to sleep again.
My arms are wrapped tightly around Alexis' waist with my head buried far into her neck whilst her arms are wrapped round my neck with her head enveloped in my hazel coloured hair. I moved my head and kissed her forehead before slipping out of my hoodie and chucking it on the armchair next to us.
"Budge up." Alexis shuffled to the back of the sofa before hugging my neck again as I laid down next to her. She held on tightly, too tightly for me not to worry.
"It's alright." I whispered. "No one's gonna do anything to you. I won't let them, just go to sleep Alex."
I stroked her hair as she took one last deep breath before her breathing rate gradually slowed down to calm sleeping rate. I took a look at her when she was fully asleep, not being able to find one thing that makes her look like me but it's nice to see because the real thing that makes her my sister, even if not by blood, is the fact that no matter what happens during the day - we can both come back home and joke around like normal siblings.
"I'm not going to let anything happen to you." I found myself whispering. "I promise, no matter what. I promise you won't get hurt."
I pulled her closer to my chest and fell asleep myself, hearing Alexis mumble a sentence back before darkness washed over me.
"I won't let anything happen to you either Ry. I love you."
"I love you too." I whispered before sleep dragged me down until I wake up again. Next to my sister, in my house and finally getting the sense of love and the feeling you get around being a family. That's how I fell asleep.
