Peeta’s side of the bed is empty when I wake up. He must be downstairs with Haymitch. When I look out of the window I see that it has stopped snowing violently like it was last night, instead the tiny bits of snow fall gently to the ground like little fairies. I hop out of bed, grab my robe and walk downstairs. I'm hungry.
"Good morning beautiful" Peeta says as I walk into the lounge. He is sat on the couch next to a not-very-drunk-but-still-drunk Haymitch, who seems to be drinking another bottle of liquor. I sit down on the couch next to Peeta.
"Morning" I say, I look up into his eyes, they are so beautiful, so calming. I lean up and give him a small kiss.
"URGH! Get a room" Haymitch grunts. We both giggle. The phone rings and Peeta and I both jump to our feet.
"I'll get it" I tell him and I make my way towards the phone. Who could it be at this time in the morning? I pick the phone up.
"Hello" I say with curiosity.
"Is this Katniss Everdeen?" The stranger at the other end asks.
"Uh...yeah, who is this"
"This is Jarmen O'Marle, I work at the same hospital with your mother in district four"
"Ok. What do you want" I twist the cord round my finger.
"It is your mother Miss Everdeen. She has fallen sick, very sick"
I'm in shock. A swarm of emotions pass through my body. I am scared, upset and angry.
"We, the other doctors and I, think that she will only make it a couple of weeks before her time is up. I am sorry for the news and my thoughts will be with you and your family through this rough time. You and Mr Mellark are welcome to come and visit her" He hangs up. I slam the phone down and let the tears drip down my face. She can't leave me, not again.
"NO" I scream.
"Katniss, what has happened" Peeta asks whilst encasing me into a hug.
"It's my Mom" I sob.
"She is sick, very sick and the doctors have said that she only has a couple more weeks left until, you know...” I don't need to finish of what I'm saying. Peeta knows what I mean.
I haven't been close with my mom, but she is the only real family I have left. I can't bear to lose her.
"I sorry" Peeta says. I lean in closer to him. I want to try and stop this nightmare from happening but I know it will never end, what is happening right now is real.
"Come on" Peeta says "Let’s go and get breakfast" I wipe the tears from my face and let Peeta lead me into the kitchen.
Peeta pulls out a chair at the table and I sit down onto it. I watch him as he mixes the flour, milk and eggs together for the pancake mix.
"Katniss, do you want strawberries or chocolate on your pancakes" Peeta asks me. That is a hard choice, I love both strawberries and chocolate.
"Can I have both please" I ask, they are a delicious combination
"Certainly" In a matter of minutes, a plate with a delicious pancake topped with chocolate and strawberries is placed in front of me. I grab my knife and fork and dig into it.
"Here you go something warm to kill the winter chills" Peeta says whilst placing a mug of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and marshmallows in front of me.
"Thank you" I say
"No problem" He replies. He sits down next to me and digs into his pancake. A few seconds later Haymitch walks in.
"Something smells nice" He says whilst sitting at the table.
"Thanks, do you want some" Peeta offers. Haymitch nods. It doesn't take long for me to finish mine, it is delicious. Peeta sits back down five minutes later handing Haymitch his pancake.
"Thank you" Haymitch grunts.
"When we are on our way back from the Capitol, is it ok if we make a stop at district 4, I would like to visit my mom before she goes. We won't be there long, I promise” They both nod.
"Right kids, I will see you later" Haymitch says, he pushes his plate away from him and stumbles off, he still isn’t sober.
"Bye Haymitch" I say. A few seconds later we hear the door slam.
"This is getting crazy" I say
"What is getting crazy" Peeta asks. I lean into the seat.
"His drinking, if he thinks he can come knocking on our door every day at 3 O'clock in the morning then he is crazy" Peeta sighs.
"Well why don't we try and talk to him about it"
"Don't forget it is Haymitch we are talking about" I reply.
I help Peeta collect up the dirty pots and wash while he dries them.
"Have you any ideas on what to get Effie for her birthday" Peeta asks me.
"No, but when we get to the capitol we could ask her to wait somewhere whilst we go and find her something." I say whilst dropping a plate into the water, which splashes foam everywhere.
"Sure" Peeta says. It doesn't take us long to finish cleaning up, so when we are we both head upstairs to get changed.
When we get into our room we find Buttercup curled up asleep on our bed.
"Good morning" Peeta says to him whilst picking him up and placing him on his lap. Buttercup has taken a liking to Peeta. Soon when Peeta begins to stroke Buttercup gently, he purrs happily. I flop down on the bed next to them. Peeta puts an arm around me.
"He misses her" I say.
