Yesterday, Liam had gotten a call from their management saying that they had a live TV performance planned in two days. As much as the news was exciting, Louis felt a little worried about it. The only time he had sung in front of a crowd was when he played the role of 'Danny' in his school play, 'Grease'.
The boys were told the song they had to work on was 'Little Things'. Harry's favourite out of them all.
The five of them were sat in a circle in the music room floor, a sheet with the lyrics in the middle of them, a highlighter in Zayn's hand.
"I think we could split the second verse up like we did with the first, so it can fit Louis or Niall in it two." Liam suggested, pointing out the section of lyrics they can split.
Harry nodded his head. He crossed his legs, leaning his elbow on his knee and resting his chin in his hand. His emerald eyes crossed over to Louis who was sitting beside him. "And I think Lou should sing that part." He smiled.
"Um, okay." Louis replied, smiling back. Funny enough, this was Louis' favourite verse from the song. Now he got to sing it with Harry. No pressure there Lou. He thought.
"Cool. And I think since I already have a part at the start with Li, Niall can sing the section at the end." Zayn explained.
Niall nodded agreeing with the idea.
"Great! Let's get to practising." Liam said happily, jumping up from the small circle and walking over to one of the five microphone stands they had set up. The others all followed, standing behind their stand. Niall offered to play the song on guitar. Louis swore that Niall had this hidden gift of hearing a song and learning to play it the next day.
Niall started playing softly, not missing a string, as Liam and Zayn sang beautifully together. Their soft harmonies melted together like ice.
Louis was so caught up in listening to the two boys, he almost forgot he was singing the next lyric. He quickly ran over the words in his head before he stepped up to the microphone, singing the words that once were Harry's. He tried to sing the notes like Harry did, although his voice was much higher than the younger boy's.
The first time through, he jumbled up a couple of the words, but as they repeated the song over and over, Louis got a little more confident each time through. Harry would always glace over at Louis during the song, smiling widely or even pulling some stupid faces, which had Louis giggling.
After just over an hour, the boy's decided to leave it there for now since they thought it sounded great already.
When Louis wasn't looking, Harry sneaked up behind the boy, wrapping his arms around his curvy waist and resting his head on his shoulder. Louis jumped a little in shock, but then practically melted when he noticed it was just Harry hugging him.
"You sound so good, Lou. Better than how I sang it, honestly." Harry gave a lop sided smile, squeezing the boy in his arms a little more.
Louis laughed softly, his hands moving to grip onto Harry's arms. He looked up to meet the boy's eyes. "Sure, sure. What ever gets you sleeping at night."
The two boys didn't notice around them how Liam and Zayn were looking between each other and the cuddly band members with raised brows, slight confusion on their faces. They didn't have a problem with it, not at all, but something about the way Harry was acting towards Louis seemed a little suspicious. Niall on the other hand was giving a knowing smile to Harry and Louis, smirking as he watched Louis laugh cutely at something Harry would whisper into his ear.
“Five minutes til show! Make sure all the boys have working mics and in-ears!” A man with a big headset on called from his station.
The five boys were all dressed and ready for tonight’s live television performance. For Niall and Louis, Niall decided to choose a simple style with just black jeans and a grey sweater with a white tee poking out underneath the bottom hem. Compared to the other boys, Louis was a little bit of a stand out. Ever since his audition, he’s liked the stripe, colour and suspender style that Niall suggested for him. So he requested that he wore a pair of maroon pants, a black and white striped shirt, black toms and black suspenders to go with it.
He didn’t think he looked all that bad.
Louis was stood, leaning against the wall away from all the bustling crew workers. As he watched the second hand tick around the clock on the wall, nervousness started to build up. He looked down to the microphone in his hands. This was it. He was basically in the same position he was in back in 2010 at the X Factor.
“You ready Lou?!” Niall said excitedly, jumping in beside Louis, making the older boy jump in shock. But it didn’t shock him enough to get past memories out of his mind.
What if he bails out again? There’s a whole crowd out there! How is he going to sing in front of them, especially when he’s singing his part of the song alone? What if he screws up the lyrics? Or what if he sings the wrong note?
“Lou? Louis, calm down.” Niall’s eyes were wide as he held onto Louis’ shoulders, holding the boy still from his slight shaking.
Louis had his eyes squeezed shut, his breathing was heavy, his grip on the microphone in his hand tight.
What if he accidentally sang the wrong section? What if he trips over his own feet? This performance was on live TV! He can’t do this! He can’t do this!
"Lou, please, calm down. Deep breaths."
"Let me try."
Niall looked over his shoulder seeing Harry quickly walking over to them, worry in his features. The blonde let go off Louis' shoulders, moving aside for Harry to step up. Liam and Zayn were now standing next to a worried Niall.
"Louis. Listen to me, Lou. Shh, everything's okay. Please, calm down Lou..." Harry said so softly, only the older boy could hear his whispers. Harry's small touch of his fingers over Louis' cheek surprisingly was helping the boy calm down, his breaths turning back to a normal speed, but his eyes still closed.
"One minute boys!" The same man called again.
"I can't do this Harry. What if I mess up? What if I don't even sing like at the audition?" Louis finally opened his eyes, looking at Harry in fear.
Harry looked right into Louis' blue eyes. "I know you can do it. You're amazing, Lou." Harry looked down at his small paper plane necklace that was dangling from his neck. He reached up and unclasped it, holding it up in front of Louis. "Wear my necklace."
Louis' eyes widen slightly. He knew that necklace from anywhere. "But, don't you always wear it when you perform?"
"Well, now it can help you perform. To remind you about all the times I call you amazing. Whenever you're doubting yourself when you sing, just hold onto it." Harry smiled.
Louis smiled back, nodding slightly. "Okay." Harry carefully brought the necklace around Louis' neck, clasping it and gently dropping it to dangle over Louis' shirt. Harry's green eyes met Louis' again.
"You'll be breathtaking." Harry said so quietly, only the smaller boy could hear.
Being this close to Harry made Louis' heart beat a little faster, but not from nerves this time.
Hearing the man call out a final time, Harry pressed a quick kiss to Louis' forehead before grabbing the boy's wrist and walking over to the other boys, dragging a stunned Louis behind him.
When they were standing in the wings, Louis looked out at the blacked out stage. It was a small stage, but it was a fairly big audience, and he was positive that there would be some One Direction fans sitting in between the crowd.
Hopefully he wouldn't disappoint them...
"Let's go boys." Liam whispered loudly, walking out on the stage and sitting on his allocated box, the other four following and doing the same. Louis and Harry were sitting next to each other, Niall beside Louis and Liam and Zayn next to Harry.
The lights slowly illuminated the stage and fans started screaming in the audience. There were a few voices heard, talking about the two new members they saw up on stage.
The music started playing, making Louis take in a deep breath to calm himself down. He looked down at the paper plane dangling from his neck. You'll be breathtaking. The words made him smile. Harry didn't miss the small smile as he looked over to Louis, grinning himself.
Zayn started the song, his soft vocals heard throughout the the whole TV studio. Liam continued flawlessly, sending a small wave to a few fans in the front row.
Once the two boys started singing together, Louis realized that he was up next. He cleared his throat quietly, having to hold his microphone with two hands because they were shaking to much.
Okay, fuck this up and you're done Louis. He told himself.
"You can't go to bed without a cup of tea,
And maybe that's the reason that you talk in your sleep,
And all those conversations are the secrets that I keep."
"Though it makes no sense to me.." Harry and Louis sang the last line together, both looking at each other with smiles on their faces.
Louis didn't do too bad, but of course he could point out each flaw that he made. His voice was a little pitchy at times or he sang to softly. But as he looked back down at the plane pendant, his worries went away for a little while.
When the song finally came to a finish and the five boys the last note together, the audience was cheering and fans were screaming. Louis was a little surprised at how loud it really was, since he's only ever heard the fans scream through an IPhone video.
The stage with brightened with normal lighting now, the boys standing up to stand in a line as the TV host came up to them with a big smile.
"Fantastic! Amazing performance boys!" The man said. The audience quietened down, settling back into their seats. "Now, I see we have two more boys up here with us. The two new members in One Direction." The most of the crowd cheered, but Louis could see a few with some questioning looks. "Why don't you boys introduce yourselves?"
"Hello, I'm Niall Horan!" Niall said happily, waving to the girls in the front row, making them smile. The Irish charm must be working.
Everyone turned to look at Louis, the older boy smiling shyly, giving a small wave to the crowed. "And my name's Louis Tomlinson." He spoke into his mic. He felt a hand press to his lower back, looking over to see Harry smiling down at him.
"And you should share your love for the new members on twitter. Niall and Louis' twitters on are the screen right now. Their album 'Take Me Home', sadly not featuring Louis or Niall yet, is out now! Merry early Christmas boys. Hopefully we'll see you back here soon." The man grinned.
The boys all thanked him and waved goodbye to the crowd before the cameras shut off, signalling the end of another show.
The moment they all stepped backstage, Niall was tackling Louis in a bone crushing hug, his face beaming with a bright smile. "We did it Lou! You were incredible!" He exclaimed, practically bouncing in his arms.
Louis laughed. "Thanks Nialler. But you owned your solo. I'm pretty sure I heard the fans singing along with you."
Niall's cheeks reddened slightly, his smile growing bigger.
A tap on Louis' shoulder made the boy turn around, seeing Harry standing there. Harry opened up his arms, wrapping them around the shorter boy in a tight embrace. Louis sunk into Harry's chest, wrapping his arms around Harry's middle.
"What did I tell you? You truly were breathtaking."
"I was a nervous wreck on the inside though. Pretty sure it was obvious on the outside too."
"Everyone's nervous their first performance. But you smashed it!"
Louis chuckled softly, pulling out of the embrace slowly. He looked down at the necklace. "I guess you did help me a with the necklace. It reminded me of your words." He reached up to take it off. "Thank you. You can-"
"Keep it. It can be your little luck charm now." Harry stopped Louis' hands, smiling softly down at the older boy.
Louis smiled shyly, looking down to hide his slight blush.
"You're my little luck charm really."
