~ Prologue ~
The fireplace was on, but it’s warmth could not fill the cold feeling in the pit of my stomach. I clutched my cup of hot cocoa tighter in my hands and pulled my blanket closer around my shoulders. I closed my eyes and said a silent prayer that the doorbell would ring and my father would come walking through the front door.
I knew it probably wouldn’t happen.
Looking up from my cocoa mug, I saw the two stockings hanging by the fire, one reading "Faith", the other “Aiden.” Mine, and my dads. My mom passed away about two years ago, leaving my dad and I alone. Money has been tight ever since then. My mom had been a lawyer, bringing in the majority of our income. When she died in that horrible car accident, my father realized that he needed to make some money, and make it fast. So when the opportunity came of course he took it. He knew the job he was taking would cause him to be gone from me for a long time, but I told him to go. We needed the money and I knew he’d be home soon.
It’s been 6 months since he left again.
He’s supposed to come back today.
I get up from my position on the couch, and saunter into the kitchen where I pace back and forth, cup of cocoa still in hand. My fuzzy socks soften every step I take, but the cold unheated floor still sends shivers up my spine. Maybe the next paycheck will allow us to afford some in-floor heat.
That’s when I heard a light knock on the door.
I practically flew to the door, my heart beating faster than I thought possible. My head hits the welcome home banner thats hanging in the entryway as I’m running, causing the left side to fall a little lower. My shaky hand reaches for the doorknob, and I quickly throw open the door.
It wasn’t him.
“Oh.” I sigh in disappointment.
“Don’t sound so excited to see me.” Luke Hemmings everybody... My boyfriend.
“I thought you where going to be my dad.” I mumble, turning to walk back to the kitchen.
“Hey don’t worry.” He wraps his arms around my waist from behind and places a kiss on top of my head. “He’ll be here, I know it.” I let a few silent tears slip from my eyes.
“I hope you’re right.” I turn my self around in his arms so I can place my head on his chest, letting more tears fall.
“I always am.” He jokes trying to lighten the mood, but it doesn’t work. My hearts just not in it.
“I’m scared Luke.” I cry softly.
“I know babe, I know.” He comfortingly rubs my back. “I am too.” This is why I love him. He’s not telling me that I shouldn't be scared, he’s agreeing with me instead. “Just have faith, Faith.” I let a small giggle escape from my lips.
“I love you Faith.” He whispers in my ear.
“I love you Luke.”
