13. ~ Chapter Eleven ~

~ Chapter Eleven ~

(A/N) - Hey guys so just a note for you while reading this chapter - there’s a point where you should play the song Soldier by Gavin Degraw, it will help you get the emotions for this chapter. You’ll know when to play it :)

"No, no, no! I told you, we need a space for an extra song there!" Luke barks at the tech group, who are busy setting up the technological part of the concert. Everyone here is still in their pajamas, most with cups of coffee and some type of muffin, and all with large bags under their eyes. Me included. There's a lot of work to be done today, and as of right now, the stage is completely bare, not even a wire across its surface. Luke rubs his temples and I can see the stress in his eyes. It's still early, but tonight there's a concert to be played, and the more time the boys have to prepare, the better.

"Hey babe." I lean into his side upon walking over to him, and he puts his arm around my shoulder.
"Hey." He forces a smile, then shakes his head. "Can I have some of that?" He motions to the cup of coffee I have clutched in my hand.

"Take it." I hand him the cup. "You need it more than me."

"God I love you." He plants a kiss on my forehead and takes a big slug of the coffee. He sighs, and I smile. He's so cute in the morning, even when he's under all this pressure. I reach up on my tiptoes, and swipe a kiss against his lips. He smiles, and leans closer to me, connecting our lips again. Tiny fireworks ignite in my stomach like always, and I want to stay in this moment forever.

"I can always count on you to make my morning better." He pulls away from me, and grins.

"I'm glad." I reply, smiling back. It warms my heart that a simple kiss can make his entire day better. "Where are the guys?" I ask, reverting our attention back to the tasks at hand. I'm a little confused why Luke is the only one helping set things up.

"Don't even get me started." He groans, shaking his head. "The idiots are still sleeping, I don't know how they can have no sense of time. Don't they realize we are playing in our hometown tonight?!" He's practically yelling by the time he finishes his sentence, and I put my hands on his shoulder in attempts to calm him down.

"Hey, hey, Luke." He peers into my eyes. "Calm down, I'll go get them okay?" A small smile breaks on his face and his eyes are filled with admiration.

"Really?"

"Of course." I place a kiss on his cheek and begin to walk back towards Luke's house, which is only a few blocks away.

"Faith?" He calls after me.

"Yeah?"

"More coffee?" He raises the mug in his hand and I giggle.

"Your lucky I like you." I stick my tongue out at him and turn back on my way.

After walking for a few minutes, my legs are already killing me and I consider stopping to rest for a bit. Just as soon as the thought enters my head though, I hear voices from the alley behind me. My body tenses up, as I freeze in my tracks. I thought this neighborhood was a pretty safe place, would Luke let me walk alone if it wasn't? What if I get abducted, oh my God, oh my God. I hear the voices suddenly get louder, and my heart quickens. I turn around and walk back towards the alley, stopping right before the entrance so that I can overhear whoever is back there without being seen. And then suddenly the voices silence. I swear to God my heart stops for a second, and my blood is rushing through my veins. Slowly, I peak my head around the corner while sucking in a deep breath.

"Holy Shit you dicks!" I yell at none other than Ashton, Calum, and Michael, my hand clasped against my chest. "You almost gave me a heart attack! What the hell are you doing, you're supposed to be at the stage setting up and practicing!" My heart rate is beginning to slow down, but I'm upset that these idiots scared me like that.

"Did Luke send you after us?" Ashton asks, wrinkling his nose.

"Doesn't matter." I brush off his question. "The point is that you three have a show to give tonight and you need to get downtown right now." My voice comes out more harsh than I mean it too, and it seems to take them by surprise.

"Jeesh, we're going." Calum puts his hands up in defense.

"Luke's sure got her uptight." Michael mumbles as the three walk away, and I wonder to myself if he's right. Am I acting uptight just because Luke is or because I want to? I shake my head, clearing my thoughts, and heading back towards the Hemmings' to get Luke's coffee.

Allphones arena looks incredibly different than it did this morning. The stage is completely prepped for the show; lights, drum set, guitars, microphones, speakers, chords, the list goes on and on. Not to mention the thousands of people filling up almost the entire arena. How did all these people get tickets on such late notice? I was expecting maybe only half of the stadium to be filled, so this is insane. I can't imagine walking out onto that stage and seeing so many people that idolize you. How do the guys do it?

I lean back in my seat, front row seat to be exact, and take in the stage where my boys will be performing in a few minutes. I'm excited, though I've been to a 5 Seconds of Summer concert before, I've never sat in the front row. Usually when Luke asks me to come to a concert, I take a seat somewhere in the higher stands. I like to leave the good seats for other fans considering I get to see the guys everyday and they don't. But today is special, and I couldn't pass up the front seat. Additionally, Luke said there's a little something extra in their set of songs tonight, and I'm interested as to what it could be. I have a feeling it's front row worthy.

Suddenly, the stage lights dim and fog is released into the audience. I hear the bass of a guitar begin the strum, quickly followed by a guitar. I pick out taping on a symbol in the background, and another guitar joins the music.
"Sydney?!" I hear Luke's voice yell as the lights quickly flash back on, and my heart flutters. "Are you ready?!" I love seeing him on the stage. He's so passionate about music, seeing him immerse himself in it is beautiful.

"Does anyone here know the song Don't Stop?" Calum asks the crowd.

"I don't." Luke answers, a grin covering his face.

"You better learn it quick." Michael jokes.

"This is Don't Stop!" Ashton yells from behind the drums, as I let their music take me away.

"This next ones a little different." Calum says, nearing the end of the concert.

"How many of you know Gavin Degraw?" Luke asks, as a stagehand brings out a chair to center stage. The crowd goes wild at the mention of Gavin Degraw and Luke sits down on the chair, handing his guitar to the boy who brought out the chair.

"This song is a cover of one of Gavin's hits." Luke says into the microphone that's placed in front of him. He adjusts the stand, and then looks straight into my eyes. "It's for a very special girl out there." The audience cheers at Luke's comment, but he doesn't seem to notice. His blue eyes are looking into mine with such a force it's hard to breathe. I can feel my heart beating faster and it's all I can do not to run up there and kiss him.

"I'll always be your soldier Faith." Luke says, as the boys begin playing.

"La da da da da da, la da da da da. La da da da da, la da da da da." Luke hums at the beginning of the song, his eyes still locked with mine. "La da da da da da da da da."

"Where did all the people go? They got scared when the lights went low. I'll get you through it nice and slow, when the worlds spinning out of control.

"Afraid of what they might lose, might get scraped or they might get bruised. You could beg them, what's the use? That's why it's called a moment of truth.

"I'll get it, if you need it. I'll search, if you don't see it. You're thirsty, I'll be rain, you get hurt I'll take your pain.
"I know, you don't believe it, but I said it and I still mean it. When you heard what I told you, when you get worried I'll be your soldier." There are tears running down my face, and I can almost feel my heart breaking. Luke's still holding eye contact with me, and I can feel the eyes of every other person in the stadium on me. Normally I would feel self conscience with all these people staring at me, but the fact the Luke is dedicating a song to me takes over everything else.

"Funny when times get hard, at the last moment when you're supposed to charge." Luke continues singing, his voice is making me weak. "Always on the longest yard, oh, they feel their feet getting cold.

"Hiding here, hiding there, find them underneath the stairs. People hiding everywhere, trying to be still like a stone.
"I'll get it, if you need it. I'll search, if you don't see it. You're thirsty, I'll be rain, you get hurt I'll take your pain.
"I know, you don't believe it, but I said it and I still mean it. When you heard what I told you, when you get worried I'll be your soldier.

"My aim is so true, I wanna show you. I'll try forever, I'm never gonna say 'surrender'." A small smile comes across Luke's face, probably to try to make me stop crying, but I can tell it's forced. The tears won't stop no matter what he does. Especially since his beautiful orbs have been on mine the whole song, and haven't strayed.
"I'll get it, if you need it. I'll search, if you don't see it. You're thirsty, I'll be rain, you get hurt I'll take your pain.
"I know, you don't believe it, but I said it and I still mean it. When you heard what I told you, when you get worried I'll be your soldier.

"I'll be your soldier. Well I'll be, oh I'll be your soldier. I'll be your soldier, I'll be your soldier." Luke's smile falters at the end of the song and I can tell there are tears forming in his eyes, though he would never show it on stage. He always puts on a brave face for the fans, always. That's why his next move surprises me.

"Dammit." I hear him say softly into the mic, as he stands up and turns his back to the audience. I know he's crying, and I know that kills him. I watch him bring a hand up to his face, which I assume he uses to wipe his tears. I see the other guys look to each other, unsure of what to do. I'm not sure if they've ever seen Luke cry before; it doesn't seem like it.

A quiet murmur rushes through the crowd, and I can tell that no one knows what is happening. Slowly, I push myself out of my seat, and walk to the stairs leading to the stage. I've never stood up on a stage before, and I'm not even sure why I'm doing this, but I do it anyway. I walk up next to Luke, and rest my hand on his shoulder.

"Luke?"

"I told myself I wouldn't cry in front of the fans." He says quietly, and the sadness in his voice hurts me. Enough that I make a quick and rash decision. I turn around and look out at the confused crowd, and take a deep breath. I reach out to the microphone that Luke sang to me through, and begin to talk.

"Um, hi 5SOS fans." I say, my whole body shaking as thousands of eyes gaze at me. "I'm, I'm Faith Wynters. Luke's girlfriend." I pause, nervous and unsure of what I'm saying. "I can see that some of you are, um, are confused at what's happening so... My dad was a soldier in the American Army. He, he... He," I inhale deeply and prepare myself to speak the words that come so hard. "He died yesterday in, in a plane crash and, um," I look back at Luke and there is an unbearable amount of affection in his eyes. "So that's why that song has, has so much meaning." I let a small smile break on my face, and back away from the microphone, nodding my head once. Luke is facing me now, tears dried in the corners of his eyes. Although it makes more tears fall from my own eyes, there's something about seeing my man cry that makes me smile. I love the fact that he allows himself to be vulnerable at some points, and not always the toughest man in the world.

"I love you so God Damn much." Luke says to me, forgetting that there's a microphone right in front of us. The entire crowd lets out an "awh" sound, and Luke quickly turns his head toward the audience.

"I kinda forgot about them." He whispers so that the mic doesn't pick up his words again, a grin on his face. He turns his head back to face me, and grabs my hands in his own, giving team a tight squeeze.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" The crowd suddenly begins to start chanting, taking me and Luke by surprise. I giggle a little, and stare at Luke. He's smiling back at me like a dork, and I wonder how I ever got so lucky to find this incredible man.

"Should we give in to them?" He asks me quietly, the crowd still chanting.

"It would be stupid not to." I reply, right as our lips connect. Wrapping my arms around his neck and feeling his around my waist, I forget about the thousands of people watching. I lose myself in the moment and kiss Luke's soft lips with passion and hunger. I love him, I always will, and this moment just proves it like any of the previous ones. He's been there with me through it all and I couldn't live without him.

"Goodnight Sydney!" Ashton yells into his microphone, and the stage lights go out. I can hear people begin to leave, but I tune it out. I stay right where I am, lips moving in sync with Luke's, on center stage. In this moment, the whole entire world disappears, and the only two people that matter are me and him.
