(NOTE: I wrote this two years ago for a school project. It's pretty terrible because I wrote it all the night before it was due.) Medieval Romance in which a girl leaves home, a wizard makes a deal, and a prince finds true love.

15. The Woman

When her husband didn’t come home that night, the woman had a hunch about what happened.  She prayed to God that she was wrong.  Three days after the man had gone missing, a young shepherd came forward and claimed to have seen her husband head into the forest alone, but he didn’t believe it was his business, so he hadn’t said anything until now.  The boy looked about nine, so even if he had said something sooner, surely no one would have listened anyway.

The woman cursed herself for not doing more to prevent this from happening.  How guilty she felt.  Only God knows what had become of her husband, but it was his own fault for not taking her warning more seriously.  She had never told her husband about the strange man in the forest because she didn’t think he would listen to her then.  He would have thought she was insane, or that she had been hallucinating from her pain.  She knew what had happened was real.  Now she had proof.  The old man had taken his reward.  Even if she told the villagers about her day in the woods, they wouldn’t believe her either.  She felt like the little shepherd boy.  The only difference was the child was brave enough to face ridicule to do what was right.  The woman was worried.  She knew if she tried to save her husband, the sneaky man from the forest would take her daughter back from her.  That was the deal and now she had to pay the price for making it.  She shouldn’t have made the promise, but she had no choice, and now it was too late.  Now all she had left was Roesia.  The woman made another promise, this time to herself.  She would do whatever it takes to keep Roesia.  A mother would do anything to protect her child.
