After school, I was at work, wanting to blow my brains out. It was a Friday so everyone was here blowing their paycheck money and I hated them all. Granted, I loved the fact that I was making money but I really hated the headache of screaming children, obnoxious teenagers, the mess that people made because it was just so convenient to leave the mess for us; I hated weekends for this reason.
“Holding up okay?” I looked over my shoulder and saw Harry walk in, holding coffee. He handed it to me and I gave him a look of gratitude.
“Thank you…and not all that well.”
“Do you see what I’m dealing with?”
“Can you take a quick break?” I looked around and saw all my associates covering the floor and I shrugged.
“Yeah, they seem to have this under control; GUYS I’M GOING ON A QUICK BREAK!” They all glanced and half nodded as if to say “okay.”
“So does that mean break time?”
“Yes it does.” I sighed and walked next to Harry outside so I could smoke a cigarette.
“So this is your life?” Harry asked once we got outside where it was slightly quieter.
“Yeah…it pays well though so I won’t complain too much.”
“Where’s Ava? Doesn’t she normally come visit you while you work?”
“Yeah, she’s probably on the dinner run right now or shopping for a dress.”
“A dress for what?”
“Are you going?” I started laughing and leaned back against the brick wall.
“Like hell I am. I would be caught dead at a school function. I have better things to do that sit and waste my time at school, supporting a school I could give two fucks less about…no, I am not going to homecoming. However Ava is convinced someone will ask me to go and when that happens, she made me promise I have to go.”
“Because it made her happy.”
“What? You don’t do anything to make your friends happy?”
“Well I didn’t mean like that, I meant why does she know that someone will ask you?”
“Do you see who you’re talking to and have been spending time around, curly? She is literally setting you up to ask me to homecoming, if you haven’t noticed yet.”
“I wasn’t going to go to homecoming either.” My eyes went wide and I looked at him.
“Why? Aren’t you all into that thing?”
“Aren’t we all? Are you referring to me and my friends?”
“Yeah, all you preppy sons of bitches.”
“They may be, but I’m not.”
“I don’t get you.”
“What’s not to get? I made it very simple right there.”
“No, you just made it more complicated.”
“I don’t see how I managed to do that.”
“I heard you were going with Elle.”
“Fuck no. She’s going to end up back with her boyfriend and then she’s going to be out of my hair and I won’t have to deal with her.”
“Deal with her?”
“You have no idea.”
“I’ve heard stories from Ava but beyond that, I would not know firsthand.” I said, stomping my cigarette out. “I have to head back inside though.”
“Yeah…I’m not even supposed to leave them in there without a manager and I did anyway so…I can get in trouble for that alone.”
“I can walk you back inside.” Harry said, slowly stepping towards me.
“If you want.” Harry nodded and followed me inside where I saw Ava flirting with some kid I saw a few minutes ago from work. “Hold on.
“AVA!” I screamed. She turned to face me and blushed slightly. “Be right back…” I said walking over to her.
“What? Is everything okay?”
“Did you pick up my dinner babe?”
“Babe?” The one guy said, smirking.
“No it’s not…”
“So is that a yes? Did you leave it with Colin or Devon?”
“You’re the best babes.” I kissed her cheek and walked away, knowing she was going to kill me later.
“What was that about?”
“Every time I see her flirting, I cock block her. She knows it’s out of love and I know she tells the guy after I leave I was just being a dick, but I do it anyway.”
“Just to be a douche bag; really?”
“Fuck yeah. It’s hysterical watching the guy assume that she’s a lesbian, just being nice.” Harry smirked and shook his head.
“You really are a dick.”
“Fuck yeah I am.” I smiled and walked back into work ad said goodbye to Harry so he could go back to his friends.
“So who’s that?” Devon asked me with a smirk plastered on her face.
“That’s mean…” She said sadly.
“You know I say it out of loving hatred.”
“Yeah, I know…but still!”
“You’ll survive.” I said, laughing and going back to work.
“Where did you disappear to?” Louis asked when I walked back up to them.
“I needed to use the bathroom.” I said.
“Outside? You reek of cigarettes.” Elle said, making a face.
“I needed fresh air.” I said, knowing it was a weak argument.
“You were hanging around Bethany, weren’t you?” Niall pointed out quickly.
“I stepped outside, she was there, and I said hi, that was it. Why is that an issue?”
“She’s not like us, Harry…you do know that, right?” Zayn pointed out.
“I literally said hi; you guys needs to chill the fuck out.”
“Whatever you say, Styles.” Elle said, eyeing me up and down with a skeptical look on her face. I rolled my eyes and listened as the topic of conversation changed, saving me from the spotlight. I did not understand why talking to her was a big deal to them. She was a person, just like me, or them; she was just way more down to earth, hand standards, she knew where she wanted to go in life, while all my friends just sat on their asses while their parents paid for everything. I mean…it was kind of nice to just be around someone who was real and not…this.
