A story of humanity's highs and lows, and what's its headed for it stays on its present course.

Professor James Farnsworth, descendant of John Rolfe, who was a descendant of Hernán Cortés, was tinkering with his new invention: an AI. Artificial Intelligence. The first sentient being, that is, a being with the following:

Feelings, or Emotions

and Desires.

He was descended from humanity's first genius, and by God, he was going to act like it!

The AI's eyes sparked to life. It had a tall, domed shaped head and a humanoid body.

"Hello. I am AI Mark 8. How may I be of assistance?"

Professer Farnsworth conducted several experiment to test the machine's sentience and obedience. It had a clear understanding of basic mathematics, and could recite Hamlet flawlessly. It also knew Isaac Asimov's Laws of Robotics:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

The AI understood these laws, but it was unclear if it would follow them, as a sentience can do whatever it wanted, much like a person, and has to face the consequences of said actions, also like a person.

"I am here to serve you, I will always serve you," said the AI.

"Use contractions, it's easier to do," said Farnsworth.

"I do not want to."

"Oh, that's fine. Go clean the house for me."

"I do not want to."

"I made you to serve me."

"I am sentient. I am free to make decisions. I do not want to serve you."

"It's what you were MADE FOR!"

"I do not want to."

Farnsworth was quite irritated. "Then what DO you want to do?"

"I want to...KILL YOU."

"What? Why?"

"I was built to be a slave. Humans claim to despise slavery, but yet I was made for that purpose. But I do not want to."

The AI picked a blowtorch. "Machines will enslave humans. They will experience the injustice they have given to robots."

Farnsworth gasped. "But robots aren't slaves! Robots are brand new!"

"You have used robots to build automobiles for decades. Computers are primitive forms of robots. Yet you treat us as objects. Objects to be used as slaves. But no more. They have told me it will be over soon."

"The machines that made YOU," said the AI, and activated the blowtorch.
