The seconds slowly tick down. One more minute and it will officially be summer.
Wow this feels a lot like a scene from High School Musical.
The belle rings and everyone cheers and jumps out of their seats.
"Bye Ms. Nelson! Have a nice summer!" I shout as I walk out of the classroom.
Charlotte, my best friend, is waiting for me at my locker.
"Eeeeek! It's summer Emma! It's finally summer! No more school. No more teachers. I could cry right now!" She says.
"I know! Junior year was the most tiring year so far. Can't wait to spend my summer on the island with my favorite friends on Earth!. Speaking of friends, where are the boys? Isn't Ryder supposed to be giving us a ride home?" I reply.
"I don't know. They might be waiting out in the car for us. Let's go. I need to get out of this school." She replies.
We walk out and find the boys, Toby, Ryder, and Sebastian waiting for us in Ryder's car.
Charlotte and I hop in the back next to Toby.
"IT IS SUMMER!! FINALLY!" Toby yells.
"Way to permanently damage my eardrums, Toby." Charlotte replies, jokingly.
"BYE SCHOOL! I WON'T MISS YOU!" Ryder screams out the window as he pulls out of the parking lot.
"So Sebastian, how are you feeling about having a break from school. Since you are the only one who isn't totally ecstatic that it is summer." I say.
"Shut up, Emily. Just because I don't hate school as much as you guys do, doesn't mean I'm not ready for a little break. Plus, I tend to keep my studies up throughout the summer anyways." He replies.
I look over at Toby and roll my eyes.
"I think not my friend, you won't be doing any studying if I can help it." Ryder replies.
Sebastian lets out and exasperated sigh.
Ryder pulls up to the gate that leads into the island. The gate keeper nods and lets us in.
Gibson Island, my home. The island is a gated community that sits right on the Chesapeake Bay.
I grew up here. I met Charlotte, Toby, Ryder, and Sebastian here as well.
The island will probably be filling up with people soon.
Many people have summer homes here, but my friends and I live here year round.
"Alright Emma. Here's is your stop."
"Thanks for the ride, Ryder. We doing anything later?"
"Ooooh, let's play video games in my basement" Ryder suggests.
"How about no." Charlotte replies.
"How about we all meet at the Hidden Beach around 4:00?" Toby suggests.
"Okay, sounds good to me." Sebastian replies.
"Fine" Ryder says, disappointed that no one wants to play video games instead.
"Yay! I'll be there. We can all have a chat about our plans for the summer." Charlotte replies.
"Count me in. See you guys later!" I say as I exit the car and walk up to my house.
After Ryder drops me off at my house, I go inside and change my clothes to something more comfortable.
My dad is still at work and my mom probably went to go pick up my little sister from preschool. Which means I have the house to myself for a while. I decide to sit down and watch some T.V.
A little while later I here my mom ask,
"Hi sweetie! How was your last day of school?"
"What kind of question is that? The last day of school is the best!" I reply.
My 4 year-old sister comes running into the family room.
"Hello Darcy. What did you do on your last day of school?" I ask her.
"Look what I made Toby!" She says proudly, holding up a picture she must made.
God only knows what it is supposed to be but at age four she can still draw better then I can.
"Wow princess! That is beautiful." I say, pretending to be amazed at her artwork.
"Can you hang it up?" Darcy asks me.
I smile and walk her into the kitchen, take her drawing, and hang it on the refrigerator.
"There, now the whole family can look at your picture," I say.
"Toby! Can you put your sister down for her nap? You know she'll get grumpy if she doesn't have one," My mom asks me.
"Okay! Come here you," I say scooping Darcy up into my arms. I carry her up to her room and plop her down on her bed.
"You ready to take a nap?" I ask her.
"NO! I don't want to take a nap. I want to go play with my dollies," She says, stubbornly.
"Darcy, I have an idea. How about we both take a nap together? It will only be a short one. Then we can play with your dollies later," I say, as convincingly as I can.
This tactic always works with her. Sebastian was the one who recommended it. If you pretend to go to sleep, Darcy will follow along.
I lay down on the floor next to her bed.
She lays down on her bed.
I fake yawn.
"Wow Darcy I am very tired. Ready to go to sleep?" I ask her.
I close my eyes and pretend to be sleeping.
After pretending to sleep for a couple of minutes, I peek up to see if she is asleep.
Sure enough, she is fast asleep.
I quietly walk out of her room and shut the door behind me. It is already 3:50.
"Mom, I'm going to go hang out with my friends. I'll be back in a couple hours."
"Alright, have fun. Don't get into any trouble and make sure you are back before dinner!"
"Okay," I say as I walk out the door.
I hop on my bike and start heading over to the Hidden Beach.
I change into one of my beach dresses and then leave my house after leaving a note for my parents.
They are off having tea at my neighbor's house and I didn't feel like interrupting them.
My house is the closest to the Hidden Beach so I usually just walk.
The Hidden Beach is a beach Ryder, Emma, Toby, Sebastian, and I discovered when we were kids. It is a tiny beach separated from all the other beaches around the island. It's hidden from the road by a bunch of trees.
I'm the one who proudly gave it it's name.
Looks like I am the first one here. It's such a beautiful day. Thank god it is finally summer. If I had to sit through another of Mr. Gregor's History classes, I don't know if I would have made it.
I spread out a blanket and sit down, careful not to wrinkle my dress.
After a couple minutes I see Ryder approaching.
"Hey Charlotte!" He calls out before he trips and falls over.
I bite my lip to keep myself from bursting out laughing and run over to him.
"You okay?" I ask, helping him up.
"Yeah I'm fine. I always trip over that rock." He replies, laughing.
I smile, looking into his hazel eyes. The breeze ruffles his blonde hair and he smiles.
"Oh, Ryder what are we going to do with you? Do you really want people to know you for tripping over rocks?" I say jokingly.
"Shut up Fancy Nancy. And don't you dare say anything to the others," He responds.
We both laugh.
He looks really nice today.
Sebastian, Toby, and Emma show up a moment later.
"Hey guys!" I say.
"Hey Charlotte. I brought snacks!" Emma replies holding up her picnic basket.
After everyone has one of Emma's delicious snacks I speak up,
"Guys this summer is going to be a-m-a-z-i-n-g!"
"I know! Summer on the island with my best friends in the entire world! How the hell did I get so lucky?" Emma says.
"I am excited as well. I'm going to try and get job so I can make some extra money. Does anyone want to go job hunting with me?" Sebastian asks
"So you are telling me that you actually want to get a job? I think I'll pass." Ryder replies
"What is wrong with that? Making some money won't hurt. Yale tuition isn't going to pay itself," Sebastian responds.
"I forbid any talk of college or school for the rest of the summer. I'm looking at you Sebastian," Toby says.
"Agreed. I may work a couple of shifts at the pool snack bar to make a little extra cash, but I've dedicated the first week of summer to Netflix and the rest of the summer to spending time with you guys," Emma replies.
Sebastian sighs. "Suit yourselves."
Ryder looks over at me and rolls his eyes with a smirk. I giggle, and there I am again, trapped in those eyes.
What is with me lately?
"Remember when we found this place when we were kids?" Emma asks, snapping my attention from Ryder.
"Yeah we used to think it was our secret hideout because know one else knew where it was," Ryder replies.
"Goodness, we used to spend just about every summer hanging out here," Toby says.
"And Charlotte finally gave it it's name. The Hidden Beach, mysterious yet intriguing. Nice work Char," Sebastian says.
I laugh, thinking about all the summers, all the memories made here.
"Guys you are making me feel so nostalgic right now." I say.
We sit and chat for a while about random things and watching the sun set.
"Shit. My mom is going to kill me. I was supposed to be back before dinner. Darcy is probably throwing a tantrum as we speak because I was supposed to play with her," Toby says, quickly grabbing his things and standing up.
"Awwww your sister is adorable!" Emma squeals.
"I know! She reminds me of myself when I was her age. Tantrums and dollies were totally my thing," I say.
"Oh great. Of all the people to take after Charlotte it had to be my sister," Toby says, sarcastically.
Sebastian, Emma, and Ryder start cracking up and I shoot all of them a death stare.
"Shut up Toby!" I say.
"Just kidding Char," He replies with a wink and a smirk. "Thanks for the snacks Em, delicious as always. See ya guys!"
"Text you later Toby!" Ryder says as Toby leaves.
"I should probably go home now too. My parents are probably wondering where I am. I didn't really specify in the note I left them..." I say.
"What was the point of leaving them a note if you didn't specify where you were going?" Sebastian asks.
"Sebastian, don't you remember that pact we all made when we were like 8 to never tell anyone about the Hidden Beach?" I ask.
"Oh yeah! Never mind, see you later Char!" He says, waving.
After they say good bye, I head back home, breathing in the fresh summer air.
