We walked down the hall where there is a picture of a purple daisy pined on a door that was closed for a surprise. I walked up to the door and wondered what was behind it. Possibly an empty room with nothing in it not even carpet that comforts the floor. Maybe it doesn’t have any windows and is cold as well as damp from not being insulated or built right. Some owners wouldn’t give their Avoxes food or water unless it is for curtain times of the day even then there was a risk for having the entire building go up in flames or being flooded out of our little places to only have it blamed on us and build the structure again. I had been in those types of sleeping arrangements and it is not pretty.
I hesitated before I touched the nob. I looked up at Mistress for assurance that this is mine or at least mine and someone else’s room. “Go right ahead Zava it’s yours.” She chimed.
I could hear my heart thump and it took me a while to grasp the knob but once I did I revealed a beautiful room. The walls were a soft turquoise blue and a black basic bed was in the middle of the room but it is made like it was two beds that was pushed together to make one. There was also a dresser set on the side of the bed that was closest to a beautifully lit window. The closet was a single door that I thought was for a different room.
I walked into the place with tears in my eyes thinking that this is the most wonderful thing that anyone had ever done for me even if it is just a bed with the mattress because I never had that before. Mistress walked right behind me and I fell right into her arms, still crying like an Avox shouldn’t. We are supposed to be treated like slaves but this person is giving us as much luxury as a regular Capital inhabitant would have.
“I can see that you like the room?” Mistress sassed and I nodded while trying to get myself together quickly as I could. I wiped my eyes clear of tears when I spot her again. The same girl that I had been spotting off and on though this entire basic tour of the household was glaring at me once again to watch what I do. I watched her as well as she just stared into my soul with those blue eyes.
“I guess I will leave you a bit to get settled. Don’t hesitate to find me.” Mistress chimed happily as she left my new room. I fell right into my bed and thought that this has got to be a dream. There is no way in the world that this mistress is this wonderful and kind to a single Avox let alone an entire plantation. I quickly pinched myself and tried to move my lounge but it was still cut out and there was pain where I pinched myself and it confirmed that I was not dreaming at all.
Suddenly, the door opened and the girl that had been watching me all through this basic tour. She looks extremely different up close. Her hair was much browner than I expected and her hands were well maintained showing that she never had worked that much a day in her life. Her dress looked white the last time I saw her but it was easily a powder blue like the walls.
“My name is Catre. Welcome.” She written down and I was still unsure because her smile was like a persons that hadn’t had much Avox training since we have to keep our mouths closed or our teeth together so we don’t cause fear within a group of people. She handed me her notebook and I was confused at what she wanted to do. But then I saw what she had written I understood that she wanted to make a conversation with me.
“Zava.” I wrote down on the page she instructed to me by pointing the page next to hers. “What are these notebooks for?” I also wrote down and handed the notebook back to her and she smiled brightly and started to quickly scribble down an answer that took a little bit to finish. However, once she did finish it was a very detailed way of explaining something in a shorter way.
“The Mistress hates the fact that we can’t speak what we think to some degree and how are we supposed to get to know each one other without one of these? So every Avox is required to have his or her notebook on them at all times to use as our way of communication.” She written and I were very impressed at how much freedom that we truly get.
“Oh she didn’t explain that to me yet since I just got here a few hours ago.” I wrote in her notebook and she gave me a questionable look.
“She did? Well then she might have forgotten to mention that I am your roommate.” Catre showed what she had written in her notebook and I was stunned to think that she is my roommate. Although I had lived in a one room shack before this it was still something suspicious and odd that this girl should not be my roommate but I would have to deal with it since it is better than nothing.
