"Hey!" the door of Alexander's car lifts up as I walk past it on my way to Johanna's car after school a few days later. I frown at him.
"Yeah?" I say.
"You coming over to work on our song?" he calls.
"I didn't know I was supposed to." I shrug, apologetically.
"Oh we didn't organise anything, I just figured." he shrugs back.
I can't really say no so I just nod and get into the passenger seat and he suddenly backs out of the parking space and speeds out of the parking lot. I stay quiet and try to act like I'm not terrified until he comes across a stop sign and slams on the brakes.
"Oh my god." I say, jolting forward and then back into my seat. "This speed has to be illegal. You did not drive like this before."
He laughs. "I didn't want to scare you at first. You're okay now, I'm a very safe driver."
I raise an eyebrow at him. "I'm not buying it. I thought you'd be more careful, this car must cost like 500,000 dollars."
"397,500." he says smoothly.
I just roll my eyes. How the hell does he have this much money to spare? I know his dad is something to do with the music industry but it's crazy to think of having that much money. I literally don't have enough money to buy a Starbucks on the way to school, let alone a Lamborghini.
I get a call from Johanna whilst Alexander and I are mid-song. I hesitate but he stops playing piano and gestures towards the phone as if telling me to answer it.
"Thanks." I smile at him, picking up the phone. "Hey, Johanna."
"Where were you?" she demands. "I waited for you for half an hour!"
"Shit, sorry!" I say, alarmed. "I totally meant to call you! I'm at Alexander's we're working on our music thing."
"Oh." she says, more calm now. "Well. That's okay then. Can you laugh right now so he thinks I said something funny?"
I frown. "No. Why do you care anyway?"
"I don't like him, I just wanna go in the car."
"I'm not doing that." I say, deadpan.
"Just laugh!" she insists.
"No, I'm going now, goodbye." I say cheerily, and hang up rolling my eyes.
"What did she want?" Alexander asks and I realised he watched all of that happen with a bit of a bemused smile on his face. I sigh, shaking my head.
"Nothing important." I wave it off. "Shall we start from the beginning?"
He nods, placing his hands on the piano. "Yeah, sure."
