Thanks to Anabel, we had a new car that wasn’t stolen, it was bought. With stolen money. We made our way East, even further away from home. Anabel was in the front seat next to Ryan who was once again, driving. I sat behind Anabel again, but this time it was different. I could see a bruise on the back of her neck, hand marks where she had been strangled by the demon who attacked us. Her purple hair was down but it was situated at the back so her neck was visible. Probably to hid the rest of her face and neck that was injured. She didn't complain though. She didn't once ask for any help or attention. She was wearing a black shirt and gray jeans, as well as a pair of purple converse.
Ryan looked the same. His hair was a deep brown in the shape of a buzz cut style. His eyes were green and focused on the road ahead, scanning for trouble.
He was wearing pale blue jeans and a black, zip up hoodie that hung on his muscular body, hiding a gray tshirt.
His hands gripped the wheel as he drove us to...where ever we were going. Everon.
The silence was unbearable. ‘so’ I said, breaking it. ‘Where is Everon?’ I looked at Anabel and the Ryan. Ryan sighed.
‘Its in between the world of the living and the world of the dead. It’s the only place for you where you have a chance of survival.’ he didn't even look at me as he spoke. His voice was flat and dull, lifeless.
‘Oh’ I said awkwardly. ‘Wait, we don’t have to die to get there? right?’ I was not up for that..
‘No’ Anabel said bluntly. ‘There are people who guard the portal, angels and demons and humans. They will let us in.’ Again, no looking at me, just a mindless gaze out the window.
Finally, Anabel looked at Ryan. ‘I need the bathroom’ she said reluctantly. Ryan looked at her. ‘There is a restaurant up ahead. We can stop there. Get some food too.’ Ryan looked at her and Anabel looked away and then so did Ryan.
I hadn’t even been thinking about food, only then did I realise how hungry I was, and I could eat anything. Literally.
Five minutes later we had arrived at the restaurant. Denny’s. I have to admit, it was my favourite place to eat, which made things seem a little better. We walked in and Anabel went straight for the rest rooms.
Ryan and I were lead to a table, Ryan ordered him and Anabel coffee and a coke each and I got some water. Anabel returned and we all gave our orders.
Anabel looked at me ‘So what exactly did you see?’ she asked, looking at me and me alone. It kind of scared me a little.
‘I saw a knight made of darkness and a soldier made of light fighting with swords and surrounded by red. Like a deep red’ I explained the best that I could. Ryan looked at me too, although his mind appeared to be somewhere else. Anabel nodded. ‘Right’ she said, lost.
‘We fight each other out?’ Ryan suggested. We looked at him. ‘Think about it. The light soldier, the angels and the dark knight-’
‘Batman?’ I said jokingly, but all I got were the confused faces of an angel and a demon.
‘And the red? thats blood.’ Anabel said flatly. ‘We die because we kill each other. There is another war coming’ Anabel said as she leaned back and held her head in her hands.
Ryan took a deep breath and accepted what i had seen. It all made sense, but I doubt that was all.
‘They are going to keep coming, you are going to keep seeing things, Jack but you can’t write, not yet. You need to wait until we get to Everon.’ Ryan said calmly, but directly.
Anabel was looking out the window, and I couldn’t help but look at her. She looked like she was in so much pain. Her lip was bust and her face and neck were bruised. ‘Jack’ she said in monotone, she looked at me and smiled. ‘I’m fine’ I didn’t believe her.
‘Don’t you have some sort of healing power?’ I asked. I just seemed like a demon would have the power to heal themselves. She laughed at my suggestion.
‘It’s complicated’ she remarked. What was complicated?
‘I’m going to go wash up.’ I declared and walked off.
Anabel continued to monitor the room, checking everyone who walked in. Ryan, who was sat opposite her, and next to me looked at her. She looked down and sighed.
‘I saved you because I thought it was right. I didn't see why you deserved to die’ she gave in and admitted, Ryan looked at her with shock. He smiled with disbelief.
‘But..You’re a demon’ he said with a chuckle of confusion.
‘Yeah’ Anabel looked down with shame. ‘I know, which is why I now don’t have a home’ She laughed and looked up at him. He was looking at her when she looked up.
‘Why aren’t you healing?’ He questioned as he took in her wounds.
She laughed. ‘You see, we have this trick.’ she said ‘We can give out a bit of essence to others. I gave my ability to heal to Jack’ She said. Ryan was still. Anabel had given me her healing powers? I didn’t quite believe it at first.
‘Yeah, I’m one hell of a demon!’ she remarked.
We ate our meal, and all chatted. I asked them about what it was like to be an angel and a demon, obviously as a human I wanted to know. They asked me things that I didn’t ever expect to be asked. ‘Why not just stop killing people and have world peace’?’ ‘why change the way you look?’ little things that as a human were taken for granted and weren’t really thought about.
When we were back in the car, Anabel drove. She told Ryan that she knew where a close portal to Everon was. It took us about seven hours to get there, and when we did, it was a relief of such enormity, I didn't quite believe it.
