2. Girl in a Country Song

Amber's POV:

I was sitting on my bed, texting Nina and Mariel. We have been friends since I first came to the orphanage 4 years ago. We all ride the same bus and are in the same grade. I know that we will stick together until the very end. Nina texted that she was coming over to the orphanage, and that she would wait for Mariel outside of her house. I put my phone in my back pocket. At the orphanage, there is always music playing on the loud speaker, so I walked out of the 12-year-old-girls room and went down to the main room and requested some of Nina's, Mariel's and my favorite songs. I then walked out and into the kitchen. As I walked into the kitchen, I saw Nina and Mariel and just couldn't help to smile wider. "So Amber, have you written any new songs lately?" Mariel said with a knowing look in her eyes. I smiled and rolled my eyes. They know me so well. "Do you even have to ask?" questioned Nina with a slight shake of her head. I love writing songs. "Yes, I wrote one for the Social Studies economics project. Wanna hear it?" I asked. "Sure!" Nina and Mariel said at the same time. We giggled. "Come on then!" I exclaimed. We raced up the stairs to my room and I grabbed my guitar. I sat on a chair next to the guitar stand and started strumming the first chords to the song. After the intro, I started to sing.

"Well I wish I had some shoes on my two bare feet,

And it's getting kinda cold in these painted on cut-off jeans.

I hate the way this bikini top chafes, do I really have to wear it all day?

I hear you over there on your tailgate whistling,

saying Hey Girl, but you know I ain't listening.

'Cause I got a name, and to you it ain't pretty little thing, hey, yeah babe,

And it's driving me red, red, red, red, red, red, red neck crazy,

Being the girl in a country song,

How in the world did it go so wrong?

Like all we're good for is looking good for you and your friends on the weekends, nothing more.

We used to get a little respect,

Now we're lucky if we even get

To climb up in your truck, keep our mouth shut and ride along,

And be the girl in  a country song.

Well shaking my money maker ain't ever made me a dime,

And there ain't no sugar for you in this shaker of mine.

Tell me one more time you gotta get you some of that

Sure I'll slide on over, but your gonna get slapped.

These days it ain't easy being that

Girl in a country song,

How in the world did it go so wrong?

Like all we're good for is looking good for you and your friends on the weekends, nothing more.

We used to get a little respect,

Now we're lucky if we even get

To climb up in your truck, keep our mouth shut and ride along,

And be the girl in a country song.

Aw naw,

It ain't a George straight

Back in the old days,

Aw naw,

We ain't a cliche,

That ain't no way

To treat a lady.

Like a girl in a country song,

How in the world did it go so wrong?

Like all we're good for is looking good for you and your friends on the weekends, nothing more.

We used to get a little respect,

Now we're lucky if we even get

To climb up in your truck, keep our mouth shut and ride along,

Down some old dirt road we don't even want to be on,

And be the girl in a country song."

I hadn't noticed that I had an audience until the entire orphanage and some guests started clapping. I glanced up in surprise, but then stared at me feet, blushing. I didn't think that I was that good of a singer, despite what my friends said. "So I'm guessing you chose women's rights as your topic?" Nina said, smirking. I nodded. Even though she was the shy one, I was always shy when it came to my singing. "OMG AMBER! THAT WAS AMAZING! YOU HAVE TO HELP ME WITH MY PROJECT!" Mariel burst out. "OK." I whispered. "Wait, hold up! Your shy?" one of the guests said in a British accent. He had curly brown hair and bright green eyes. Other than him, there were 4 others. One had blonde hair and blue eyes, one had black hair and brown eyes, one had brown hair and brown eyes, and the last one had brown hair and blue eyes. "I'm Harry, and that is Niall, Zayn, Liam, and Louis." The one that I now knew as Harry said. "OK, I'm Amber" I said, slowly building up my confidence. Harry turned to Ms. Linda, the orphanage director. "This is Amber? The one you told us about?" He asked. Ms. Linda smiled. "Yes, she fits all of your requirements in the child you want, except that she is a girl." She explained. "Wait, you want to adopt me?!?!" I said, hardly able to believe it. No one has ever wanted to adopt me! By that time, everyone except me, Nina, Mariel, the 5 boys, and Ms. Linda had left. "Ummm... We'll just go now..." Mariel said awkwardly. "No, please stay. I like it better when you two are around. It helps me relax." I told them. "Who are they?" Niall asked politely in an Irish accent. "These are my two best friends, Nina and Mariel." I introduced them, smiling and walking over to where the girls were sitting on the bed. "Well, I'll let you 5 get to know Amber. Nina, Mariel, you may stay if you wish." Ms. Linda said, smiling. She liked having Nina and Mariel around. They were the only 2 people who were allowed to sleep over at the orphanage. "We'll stay!" They both said eagerly. "OK then!" She said. Then she walked out the door, shutting it behind her. The boys walked over to the bed across from us and sat down. "Soooo..." Harry started, but he was cut off by Louis. "Do you like carrots?" He asked eagerly. "Ummm... Sure." I said, holding back a laugh. Nina was trying (but failing) to keep a straight face, while Mariel was almost choking from trying to keep her laughs under control. "Why?" He asked. "Uh... I don't know... they're good for your eyesight?" I said, a little unsure. Louis started grinning from ear to ear. I shot a questioning look at Mariel, to receive a shrug in return. "I'm sorry about him, he's a little obsessed with carrots." Liam said, smiling sheepishly. "OK then..." I said awkwardly. "Hey, I have an idea! Let's play 20 questions to get to know you better!" Zayn exclaimed. "OK." I replied. I played 20 questions for the rest of the night with the boys until I had to go to bed.
