After everything died down, they all stayed at a hotel and had a sleep-over. None of them slept together. That would be way too much too soon. But, they all did have a lot of fun. The parents paid for it, but they didn't stay at the hotel. They trusted them enough to stay there alone. They were very happy for them all. They were also very proud.
They all wore their medals until bed, and they all put them in the cabinet under the bed, for safekeeping while they slept. They all fell asleep, proud, and happy. The moonlight shining in the window set the mood, and they drifted to sleep.
That morning they woke to the smell of fresh pancakes and sizzling bacon. The snow outside wasn't much, but it was enough to cover the ground in a thin blanket of fluff. Brittany woke to see Chance beside her on the edge of the bed.
"Morning, beautiful! How'd you sleep?" he asked.
She brushed her hair out of her face, "Great, what about you?", she asked. He smiled.
"Great. Madison and Gabe are downstairs at the pool and jacuzzi. I saved you some pancakes, Gabe almost ate them all. That pig..." he said.
She was sore today, so she didn't try too hard to smile. She just yawned.
"Still a little tired there, Sleeping Beauty? I think you are...", he said laughing. She laughed. "Yeah, I'm a little tired, but not much. You're here to keep me awake." she said. He leaned in and kissed her cheek.
"I'll go get your new outfit, that I snuck out and bought for you. I hope you like it!" he said grinning. He raced out of the room to get it.
He came running back with a pink sweater tunic with white leggings.
"Oh, my god. This is so pretty! You snuck out and got this for me, Chance?",she said in awe. He nodded and wrapped his arm around her.
"Anything for you. I will do anything for you and I want you to remember that always, Brittany. Just wait 'til you get your Christmas present!" he said happily.
She smiled and slipped her hand into his. She leaned her head on his shoulder. He held her tighter. It was so perfect...
Gabe came running in, hand in hand with Madison. They were laughing hysterically.
"You're so weird!" Madison said grinning. Gabe shoved her, playfully.
"I am not! You're the weird one!" he said laughing.
"Umm, hello? Trying to have a moment here, mind much?" Chance said jokingly. They looked over.
"Oh! You trying to get down with her? I'll back off then, loverboy." Gabe said totally joking.
Chance grinned, "Sure, sure. I'm tryin to get down with her after a traumatic experience. Yeah, no. But, thanks man.", he said smiling. Gabe rolled his eyes. "Whatever you say..." he said.
Madison and Brittany slipped away, and went down to the spa, but the boys didn't notice.
"So, you and Gabe...." Brittany said.
Madison smiled, "Yep. What's up with you and Chance? He seems to worship the ground you walk on, girl. I worry sometimes. Joking, joking. Congrats to you!" she said.
Brittany didn't smile, but she wanted to.
"Yeah. He doesnt worship the ground I walk on for your information, girly. He's just my boyfriend, who happens to care a little too much about me. I still love him." she said.
The two girls laughed and walked to the closet. They grabbed a towel, but instead of going to the spa, they went to the pool.
They sat down in the hot tub and they acted like normal teen girls. They laughed and joked, and splashed each other with water a couple times. Then the boys came sneaking in and jumped in the hot tub and scared the girls. This was the first time they'd ever seen the boys act like, well, boys! It was weird, and funny to see them getting along like they were brothers.
They all were laughing and all the other people that were in there before had left. Brittany managed a smile, and they all grinned back at her. They all got out of the hot tub and grabbed the towels. They all dried off and raced to the hotel room. They knew that the parents would be there soon to pick them up. But, they didn't want to leave, they were all way too happy.
After they were in the hotel room they all sat down on the couch and watched tv. Chance and Brittany held hands and so did Gabe and Madison. They were so happy.
After about an hour they went down to get some lunch. There was a crowd hovering over them the whole time, and none of them liked it much. Brittany was getting a little claustrophobic, they were getting so close. Chance noticed her facial expression and shoved throught them. They all disbanded and left as soon as he did. "That went well...", he said smiling. She wished she could smile back, but she couldn't. It hurt to smile still, just not as much as before. They all sat down at a circular little table, and just burst out into hysterical laughter. None of them knew why, but they all just started laughing.
After they stopped laughing, they were just silent.
"So....Awkward silence.... Yep...." Gabe said trying to break the awkward moment.
They all laughed hysterically again. They still didn't know why. Brittany couldn't help it, she smiled really bright. Chance smiled, but after that, he told her not to hurt herself. She knew he was right, she shouldn't be hurting herself like that. She wished she could smile again, this slash on her face ruined her. It made her look so hurt, and it held her back from even the simplest thing. Smiling was just something usual before, though it was rare for her. Now smiling hurt, and she longed for the days she felt strong, not hurt and weak. She hated this pain. But, she knew it was something she couldn't escape right now. This was really hard.
Chance wrapped his arm around her. He smiled at her, and whispered she doesn't have to hurt herself for anyone. He was too sweet towards her, it made her feel so loved. They were so young, but it felt so perfect. She refused to let herself think this would ever end, no matter what. This was perfect and nothing could change that. No matter how young they were, this was perfectly perfect, and nothing could make this crumble. Not anything.
Chance kept thinking. He kept trying to think of something to do to make Brittany forget. She had to forget the pain of her past. It killed him to see her so scarred. He looked down at her hands. He noticed a small scar that looked like it had healed, but never went away after years and years of time. He wondered why she had a scar there, or a scar at all. He hated that she had pain like that. This would never go away from her, and he wished he could help her more. All he could do right now was hold her hand, have his arma around her, kiss her, and that's it right now. He didn't have the nerve to go any farther than that, it would be too far anyway. He shook his head and came back to reality.
"Are you okay?" she said with a soft voice, like an angel.
Chance was still a little dazed.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little lost in thought I guess." he said.
She leaned her head on his shoulder. He couldn't stop these thoughts. He kept losing himself in the way she made him feel. She looked so innocent, and she didn't deserve this pain. He tried to help her, but he didn't think it was doing anything at all. She just looked so hurt, yet like she wasn't taking any blows. He didn't get this...
"What is wrong with me? She's fine! She's not being abused anymore. She's with you, and she's got her head on your shoulder, everything's fine." he thought. He held her tighter and he didn't hear her speaking to him.
"Chance? Chance? Chance, come on, can you hear me?", she said. He blinked his eyes,
"Yeah, I'm here. What?", he said. She looked worried. "Are you okay, you've been staring at me the whole time? What's wrong? I'm right here, Chance...", she said, worried about him.
He took a breath, "I'm fine, just thinking. I just wonder, are you okay? After everything that's happened, I've been worried about you. I just keep thinking about what I could've done, and what I think I can do now. I just don't know what's wrong with me today." he said, being totally honest with her.
She took his hand, "I'm fine. There's nothinng more that you could have done, Chance. Without you there, I might not be here right now. I could be in the hospital still with more beating scars than any child can handle. You are fine, and so am I. Just know that I am here and you are the one who saved me. You are the hero in my world." she said.
He smiled at her. He finally agreed.
"Okay, I will remember. You are amazing, Brittany. Nobody can replace you. I don't know what I ever saw in Addison. I guess I should tell you now... I have always liked you back. I just was scared to tell you before. When we met, I knew that you're that cute girl that was always hanging out with everyone but me. I wanted to hang out with you, but I didn't know how to begin. Then, I didn't expect to see that girl at the same camp I went to that summer. I guess I was scared to talk to you even then. I tried to stay with the people I knew, but you just... I don't know. I just wanted to get to know you. I- just don't know..." he said.
She stared into his brown eyes that filled with tears.
"Chance. I didn't know... I didn't know that you wanted to get to know me. I didn't know. I'm gonna tell you what's going on in my head. I keep thinking about what I should've done. I noticed you kept staring at me that year. I kept trying to get closer, but everyone else kept shoving you farther away from me. I tried to talk to you, but your friends just seemed like they didn't want me there, and interrupted me everytime. You were that cute boy that stared at me during class, and tapped on the table when you walked past me at lunch. The boy that grinned at me in the distance, the one that made me feel attatched. I thought of you during every beating at home, every tear that fell, you were in my head. Then, the camp came up, and I didn't think you'd be there. I arrived, then a few minuted later you walked in the door, and I just felt so high, I guess. I was happy, but yet nervous that you had forgotten about me. We didn't know each other, but I tried to act like we had been friends forever around everyone else." she said.
He wanted to cry. She started crying on his shoulder. "I don't want to lose you." she whispered.
