Going to this party was a terrible idea, it wasn’t my usually environment and I had no idea what I was doing. The music was so loud it vibrated the ground and people were trying to yell over it to talk to each other but most people were just grinding on each other. Abigail had somehow already gotten a bottle of alcohol and was chugging it down.
“Do you want some?” She asked, holding the bottle out to me. I shook my head and pushed it away, she shrugged and put it to her lips once again. Skylar suddenly put his arm around me and I jumped away at his touch but he pulled me towards him and then I saw that some drunk guys running past where I was just standing.
“I didn’t think that you would want to be run down by some party boys,” He said, I smiled to show I was grateful and looked down at the floor. “Are you sure you want to be here?”
“I’ve got to go to a party at some point, might as well do it now with people I know.” He nodded but he looked worried. I looked around for Abigail and saw her in the centre of the dance floor taking everyone’s attention. “Don’t worry about her, I’m her brother and I’ll look out for her.”
“She’s lucky to have you so concerned about her well-being.” He smiled and looked back at Abigail who was pushing her way through the crowd towards us.
“You guys have to dance with me it’s no fun doing it by myself. Anyway, I need a strong guy to keep these pervs away from me.” She put her hand on Skylar’s shoulder and started pulling him into the crowd.
“What about Riley?” Skylar asked before he was out of view.
“She can look after herself.” Skylar shrugged at me and then disappeared. I wrapped my arms around myself and tried to get away from all the people dancing and bumping into each other. I slowly shuffled backwards and tried to get to the wall but then I realised that there were junkies hanging out there.
“Hey, is this not your usually thing either?” I turned to see a guy who looked a bit older than me, he had stubble growing on his chin like he hadn’t shaved for a while but his hair was clean and brushed. “My friends dragged me here, they’re real party animals. Do you want a drink or something? I know a guy who lives here and he had a good collection of drinks.”
2 years earlier
“I promise you that this will be the best thing that ever happened to you. Michael’s taking me and I want you and him to get along so you should totally come with me.” She had been trying to persuade me to come to this party for hours and I was beginning to get worn out.
“Okay, fine, I’ll go but not for a long time.” She squealed on the other end of the phone and I pulled it away from my ear. “Pick me up in 20 minutes, I’ll be ready then.”
“Thanks so much for this, Riley. See you soon.” She hung up and I went through my clothes trying to pick out one that was party appropriate.
20 minutes later she was at my house with Michael in the car playing his music on full blast. She hugged me as soon as I opened the door and pulled me towards the car, she got in the passenger seat and I sat in the back and watched while they kissed for a second.
“This party is going to be amazing, I promise you that Riley. You’re never going to forget this it’s going to be the best night of your life.”
The next thing I knew I was running out of the house and trying to catch my breath. I didn’t want to stay there for another second even if I needed to be more exciting I just couldn’t stay there any longer. I had no idea where Skylar or Abigail was but I knew that they’d catch up with me eventually. I sunk to the ground and tried to block out the sound of the music that seemed to be playing even louder, people were dancing in front of the house because apparently there was no more room inside. I wanted to wait for Skylar and Abigail but I wanted to leave as well. I turned on my phone and saw that I had a missed call from someone luckily they left a voice mail. I played the message and put my phone to my ear.
“Heyyyy Riley, I forgot to tell you that I got your number from the reception office. Me and Skylar have like spent 5 hours dancing and he’s all worried about you so where you at girl? Call me back so we can find you, peace!” I called her back and waited for her to answer.
“Riley, where are you?” It was Skylar, he must have taken Abigail’s phone from her at some point.
“I’m outside, I might sound like a killjoy but I want to leave if you guys still want to party I’ll go back by myself. I’ll just get back alone, I don’t want to be a bother and all so yeah, see you later.”
“No, me and Abigail will be there soon. Stay where you are.” He hung up and I waited. I thought I’d be able to handle a party but I obviously couldn’t. I felt like such a loser, ducking out of a party early. I should have stayed and danced with Abigail and Skylar.
“Riley, there you are.” I looked up at Skylar who was basically holding Abigail up. She was completely wasted. “Come on, I’ll take you back to your dorm.” I stood up and we started walking towards our building. “Sorry about leaving you like that but Abby’s very stubborn, how was the party?”
“I don’t think parties are really my thing…”
“Yeah, they’re not for everyone. You don’t have to come to one again if you don’t want to, I’m sure Abigail will understand.” We weren’t far away from the building now and I was getting tired so I was glad that we were close to getting to my dorm. “So, you managed to get away from all the drunken guys. They have a reputation for trying to cop a feel, they didn’t touch you did they?” I shook my head and he seemed to be relieved. “How’s To Kill a Mockingbird? Have you finished it yet?”
“No, I was getting ready for the party. It took me a while to find something that looked good.” I hadn’t bought any party clothes with me so I had to improvise. I just wore my favourite black sweater and grey skinny jeans. I didn’t want to wear anything revealing unlike Abigail who wore a short red dress but she had Skylar to make sure nobody tried anything with her.
“You look good in what you’re wearing anyway,” Skylar said, causing heat to flood to my cheeks. “I don’t mean in a sexual, flirting way or anything I just mean you look good in a friendly, unromantic way…yeah…that…” He seemed to be more embarrassed by this than I was.
“I get it, thanks, you look good in a friendly, unromantic way as well.” He smiled and we got to the door of the building. I held it open while Skylar pulled Abigail in. “We should go up in the lift, it’ll be too hard to drag Abigail up the stairs.” Skylar agreed and we waited for a lift to arrive which it did quickly due to people being out partying. We got into the lift and waited for it to arrive at my floor in silence. I opened the door to my dorm and Skylar placed Abigail on her bed and stood there awkwardly looking at me.
“So, I guess I should be going, I’ll see you around.” He nodded at me and left, closing the door behind him. I put a blanket over Abigail and sat on my bed wondering what that night would have been like if we hadn’t left the party so early.
“The point of view that you’re writing your story in is very important, you need to get into that person’s mind and write as if you were them. You need to describe things as they would describe it. For instance, if they were a rebellious teenager in high school you need to write like you despise school and like you’re always taking every opportunity to get out of working. Being in the mind of your point of view person is very important in writing. Remember that. Okay, that’s the end of today’s class, see you all tomorrow.” Everyone started putting their things away and walking out of the door but I hung back. “Riley, what can I do for you?”
“I just wasn’t sure about how to start the story that you assigned me, the start of the story is the sort of thing that pulls people into the book so I want it to be perfect.”
“Why don’t you start with why you came to University and anything interesting that happened when you got here? It doesn’t have to be perfect, you can always re-write it after you’re finished,” He said, leaning against his desk. “Has anything interesting happened since I gave you that assignment?”
“I went to a party but not for long, I don’t think I’m a very exciting person.”
“Everyone’s a bit exciting, I used to think that I was so boring but people can show you that you’re so much more interesting than you think.” He touched the ring on his finger as he said this.
“Is that person for you you’re partner?” He smiled and looked at the floor.
“Yes, he’s shown me that I’m a very important person and I feel the same way about him.” Hearing about how cute his relationship was made my heart flutter, they seemed to really care about each other and that was so adorable. “Anyway, I’ll see you in class tomorrow.”
“Bye sir.” I walked out of the classroom and saw Abigail waiting for me. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to admire Mr Crange, boy is he hot.” She tilted his head staring at him. “Damn.” She looked back at me and smiled. “Sorry about yesterday, I didn’t mean to get wasted and leave you. I just wanted Skylar to pay attention for me for once. When he was dating Heather he didn’t see me that much but now I have him all to myself.”
“If you asked him to hang out I’m sure he’ll be willing to see you more often. You don’t have to get drunk to get him to be with you,” I said and she sighed.
“I wish it was that easy, anyway, wanna go shopping? There’s a shopping centre not so far from here.” I was going to start writing my story but that sounded more interesting.
“Yeah, sure, let me get back to our dorm so I can get my money.” Abigail smiled and put her arm around me as we walked.
“Skylar’s coming with us because he’s got a car and money.” She continued to talk all the way to our dorm and all I gathered from it is that she has a lot of money from her Dad trying to repay the fact that he got remarried but she was never angry with him. “Okay, hurry up so we can get going. I’m going to get you so much clothes that you will use whenever we go partying.”
“I don’t know about going partying again, I don’t really like the party scene.” Abigail frowned and pouted.
“But I can’t go partying without my roommate I need you to be with me in case anything happens. You’re the first person I’m going to tell about anything not even Skylar will know before you and Skylar always comes with me to parties and he’ll find out about it before you if you don’t come with me.”
“I don’t mind, honestly. You go have your fun and I’ll just be here studying or something.” Abigail sighed and wrapped her arms around me in defeat.
“I’m going to buy you clothes for dates though because what you have is not going to impress a guy,” She said and let go of me. “Now go get your money.”
“Try this on, Riley, it will really suit you.” Abigail handed me something that just looked like a small piece of material.
“What is it?” I asked, examining it.
“It’s a skirt, go on try it.” She pushed me towards the changing rooms. “I’ll hand you more clothes while you’re changing.” I stepped into the changing room and closed the door behind me. I looked at the tiny piece of fabric and wondered how I was supposed to put it on. I wiggled out of my jeans and slipped the skirt on. “Are you done yet? Let me see you.” I didn’t realise she wanted to see me in the skirt, Skylar was out there as well. I didn’t want them to see me in barely any clothes.
“Uh…can’t you just not…see me in this…?” I asked.
“Don’t be shy Riley, just come on out. You’re going to look great, your legs will look stunning in that.”
I watched her and Michael make out on the sofa as I stood awkwardly by the wall and waited for her to introduce me to someone or something. She seemed busy and I saw a guy looking at me from across the room so I looked back at him trying to flirt with him with my eyes. I had just got out of a relationship with someone and being with someone else seemed like a reasonable thing to do. The guy started walking over to me.
“Hey, do you want a drink?” He asked and I nodded, he took me by the hand and led me towards the kitchen. He started pouring me a drink and looked at me up and down. “You know your legs are stunning.” I looked down at them and smiled.
“Thank you, do you have a name?”
“Yeah, it’s Andrew, what’s yours?” He went over to the freezer to get some ice, causing him to turn his back on me.
“That’s an awesome name especially for a pretty little thing like you.”
“Riley!” Abigail had been knocking on the door for the last minute and I just snapped out of my thoughts.
“Sorry, I’m just a little tired.”
“So, are you going to show me the outfit or not?” She was way too persistent. I sighed and took the skirt off and quickly got back into my jeans.
“No, I don’t like it.” I opened the door and handed her the skirt.
“I think that’s for the best, I wouldn’t want you wearing skimpy clothes so all the guys look at you,” Skylar said, appearing from nowhere.
“Why wouldn’t you want guys looking at her? She would look sexy in that and all the guys will want her, isn’t that what you want Riley?”
“Don’t speak for her, Abigail.”
“Don’t protect her, she can look after herself.”
“I don’t like revealing clothes and I don’t want to wear anything like that. I just want to wear clothes that are comfortable,” I said.
“Sorry,” Abigail mumbled and shifted from one foot to another. “I just thought that you were like me when it came to fashion.”
“I’m sorry too I shouldn’t be worrying about you. You’re perfectly capable of looking after yourself.”
“You don’t need to be sorry. I like that you’re trying to get me nice clothes, Abby and I like you worrying about me, Skylar.” They smiled and Abigail played with something behind her back. “What’s that?” I asked her and she sighed, bringing it out from behind her.
“I didn’t know if you’d like it or not but Skylar picked it out for you.” It was a long grey cardigan that looked really comfortable. I took it from Abigail and tried it on. It was a bit big for me but that was just how I liked my clothes.
“It’s so nice, thanks Skylar it’s just my style.” Abigail pouted like a little kid.
“I’m usually so good with clothes,” She muttered and I gave her a hug.
“Thanks for trying.”
