“Have you ever had a pet? I’ve personally always wanted a cat but my Mum’s allergic so that’s never been an option.”
“I had a hamster but my Dad hated it so he left the cage open and it ran away and after that no more pets. What are you studying here?” Neil and I had been talking for hours in the park near to the University and it had been great getting to know him. I knew that I had to go back to Abigail and Skylar at some point but staying with Neil for the time being seemed good. At least until his phone rang.
“Hello? Okay, okay, I’ll be right there.” He hung up ad turned to me. “I have to go to meet someone for an emergency study session but I’ll give you my phone number so we can meet up another time.”
“Okay then,” I said even though I was a little disappointed that he had to leave.
“Don’t worry, we’ll see each other soon especially since we live on the same campus. I’ll walk you back if you want me to,” He offered but I shook my head.
“No, that’s okay. You get to your study session.” He smiled quickly and then proceeded to leave. I didn’t really wanted to go back and face Abigail who would probably apologise for what she said which meant that I would forgive her because I’m a door mat. I started walking towards the campus and when I got there it was practically deserted. I assumed that everyone was at a party that Abigail was most likely getting wasted at and Skylar would be trying to control her and keep her from doing anything stupid. I walked back to the dorms and when I opened the door to my one I saw Abigail and Skylar sitting on her bed.
“Riley, where were you? I was so worried about you!” Abigail said and I shrugged, going to sit at my desk. “I’m sorry for what I said I was just angry at Skylar and trying to get at him. I shouldn’t have got you involved.”
“I know you shouldn’t have but you did anyway thinking that I wouldn’t be there to defend myself. Do you always talk about me without my knowing or was it a special occasion?” I couldn’t believe these things were actually coming out of my mouth. I was actually sticking up for myself for once and it felt so good. I had a fire in my belly and I just wanted to tell them that talking about people in that way was wrong and immature but the fire was extinguished when I caught sight of an envelope on my desk. “Who left this here?” I asked and they shrugged. I basically ripped the envelope apart and started frantically reading the note.
You probably have no idea who I am but I’ve seen you and the way you act around him. Stay away from Skylar or else you will get it and I’ve seen you with my ex, Neil. You’re welcome to him he’s a piece of garbage anyway. If you ever go anywhere near Skylar again I will track you down and kill you. You have been warned.
“What does it say?” Skylar asked and I looked up at him.
“Your psycho ex-girlfriend is very protective over you, isn’t she? Threatening to kill me if I go anywhere near you apparently well, she’s going to have to live with it.” Abigail smirked and nudged Skylar so he would smile as well.
“She’s not going to get to you with me around,” Abigail said and I smiled at her. I forgave her for what she said, she was sticking by me now and that’s all that mattered.
“You know you could probably report her for that note and get the police on her case,” Skylar suggested and we laughed at him.
“Are you mad? I know Heather, she can get away with anything she likes by batting her pretty little eyelashes,” Abigail said and rolled her eyes. I noticed she did this a lot especially when talking about girls that annoyed her. “I don’t know what you saw in her.”
“I was quite young and I just wanted to get a girlfriend and she seemed to like me. I mean, really like me, she wrote on her textbooks Mrs Skylar Doleson. I just thought she had a small crush or something but it was an obsession.”
“She followed him home and once she broke into my room thinking that it was his. I was kind of a tomboy back then so she couldn’t tell the difference.”
“She sounds crazy, why did you ever go out with her?” I asked Skylar who sighed and looked over at Abigail.
“She blackmailed him,” Abigail said and sighed, putting her hand on the back of her head. “When she went into my bedroom she found my diary because I was the kind of girl who wrote in her diary and she basically found out all my secrets and Skylar protected me from getting humiliated but now that it’s years and years later I’m not concerned about what I wrote being told to everyone.”
“So, you stayed with her for years because she was blackmailing Abigail?”
“No…like I said, I just wanted a girlfriend and she fit the bill.”
“Yeah, he was desperate and I tried to tell him constantly to break up with her and he only did this when he found out that she was with some guy called Neil.” My stomach dropped when I heard his name, I didn’t want them to know that I was hanging out with the guy who Heather cheated on Skylar with. “I mean, I want to tell this guy how grateful I am that he stopped this joke of a relationship.”
“But I know better because he betrayed the bro code and if I did see him I would be mad at him, I don’t have any feelings for Heather but still what he did was wrong.” I couldn’t tell Skylar that I was hanging out with Neil which meant I had to try to avoid him when I was around Skylar.
“Uh…but what if he didn’t know that you and Heather were still going out?” I asked, trying to defend Neil without them knowing.
“Well…I supposed that’s a plausible excuse,” Skylar said. “Let’s stop talking about my ex. Abigail, are you seeing anyone I should know about?”
“No, I’m just casually with people that I hope I never see again…” She said quickly and Skylar raised his eyebrows at her. “What? Don’t worry, I use protection so no getting pregnant for me.”
“I don’t really want to hear about your sex life, Abigail, I was talking about your love life,” Skylar said and shook his head in shame.
“Oh…sorry. How about you, Riley? Anyone you’re interested in that you haven’t already told your besties about?”
“No,” I answered without hesitation.
“Okay then…tell us if there’s any change,” Abigail said and put her feet on Skylar’s lap. “I don’t want to go to class tomorrow, my most recent uh…sexual partner is in my class and I’m going to have to face him.”
“Well, who is he?”
“You don’t want to know,” Abigail said and this caught Skylar’s attention.
“You can’t say that, it makes me want to know even more. Come on, just tell me who it is and I’ll leave you alone.”
“But you’re going to be mad!”
“I promise I won’t be, just tell me who it is!” Skylar whined and shook Abigail’s feet playfully.
“Fine, fine, fine. It was your best friend, Adam.”
Skylar promised not to be mad but he stormed off like he was pretty angry and Abigail put her head in her hands in shame. I had no idea what to say to her but I was going to try to say something but my phone rang. I picked it up and saw that Neil was calling, it wasn’t really a good time but I did want to talk to him.
“Hey, have you finished your emergency study session?” I asked and looked at Abigail, I didn’t want to talk in front of her while she was upset so I went outside the dorm and into the hallway.
“Yeah, I was wondering if you were doing anything now. We could get dinner or something.” I bit my lip and thought about Abigail. She needed me right now and I couldn’t leave her but I wanted to hang out with Neil as well.
“I don’t know, I think it’s a bad time.”
“I could come over and pick up some Chinese on the way or something, would that be fine?” I was feeling pretty hungry and I could use some extra support for cheering Abigail up and Neil was a good person for that job.
“Okay, come on over. My dorm number is 42 in the West building.”
“I’ll be right over.” I hung up and went back inside. I sat next to Abigail and put my arm around her.
“Skylar hates me for being a slut but I can’t have a serious relationship. It always ends up in me getting hurt and it just feels good to be the person who doesn’t care about the other person. You probably don’t want to hear this feeling crap.”
“Friends are here to listen and I don’t mind hearing about your feelings.”
“You’re just saying that, my life is so fucking stupid. I can’t believe I slept with my brother’s best friend, I’m such a whore! I’ve slept with most guys at this damn campus and I’ve been here for like 2 weeks.”
“You’re not a whore, Abigail. The fact that you can get that many guys is awesome, you’re so pretty and cool and I just can’t believe that you want to be my friend. When I first met you I was annoyed that you were so outgoing to some stranger because I was jealous of you. I’m still jealous of you but at least I get to hang out with you.”
“I literally think you’re awesome, Riley. You’re sweet and shy and even Skylar likes you more than he likes me and I can’t believe you ever being jealous of me when you have everything going for you.”
“Well, it’s true and I have not got everything going for me. How about we have some Chinese and watch a shitty chick flick?” I suggested, nudging her so she wold smile.
“Okay, let’s go get it.”
“Uh…actually someone’s coming over and bringing the food with them.” Abigail looked up at me and raised her eyebrows.
“And you said you weren’t interested in anyone, you sly fox.”
“It’s not like that, we’re just friends and I just wanted to let you meet him.”
“What’s his name? What does he look like? Are you sure you’re not interested in him? Because I may get my claws into him if he’s cute.”
“Uh…I don’t really know how to say this so I’ll just tell you. His name’s Neil, as in Heather’s ex-boyfriend Neil.”
“Ex-boyfriend, they broke up?! Was Heather cheating on him?”
“Yeah…you’re not mad that I was hanging out with him?” She laughed and pushed me gently.
“No, I already like this guy for splitting Heather and Skylar up. It’s Skylar who has a grudge against him and anyway you can hang out with whoever you want.” There was knocking on the door and Abigail turned to me, grinning excitedly. “It’s time!”
“This is Abigail, Skylar’s step-sister but I guess you already knew that,” I said as I introduced Neil to Abigail who was very excited about this whole thing.
“Hi Neil, thanks for getting Heather to cheat on Skylar with you. It’s a good thing that you’ve broken up with her because she’s a right vain, stuck-up bitch!” Abigail screamed and then smiled, calming down almost instantly. “Anyway, we’re going to watch Definitely Maybe and eat Chinese food so just get comfortable.”
“Wait, you’ve got a TV in here?” Neil asked.
“No, no, no, I’ve got a laptop that my Dad bought me. We watch the movies online even though it’s a pretty small screen,” Abigail explained, took a box from Neil and sat down on the floor. “Come on, I love this movie so let’s get this started.” I shrugged and took a box from Neil.
“Just do what she says, it makes life a lot easier.” We sat down and Abigail started the movie without hesitation.
About half an hour into the movie I started to get tired and could barely keep my eyes open. Abigail, however, was wide awake and just staring at the screen with her eyes twinkling. Neil seemed to be enjoying the movie as well but I was just so tired.
“What the hell is going on here?!” A voice boomed from the doorway. I was suddenly wide awake and I turned back to see Skylar standing there. I rubbed my eyes and Abigail paused the movie.
“We were just at the good bit!” She moaned.
“Who is this guy and why are you watching a romcom with him?” Skylar asked and Abigail rolled her eyes.
“You’ll never get this, it’s Neil the guy that used to be dating your ex. Are you still mad at me or have you forgiven me for being who I am?” She asked, raising her eyebrows.
“He’s who?” Skylar said and turned towards Neil who waved awkwardly.
“If it helps, Heather cheated on me as well and she broke up with me because she’s still obsessed with you,” Neil offered but Skylar didn’t look very mad.
“Just fuck you all,” He said and left.
“Well, that was eventful,” Abigail said after a few seconds of silence and then burst out laughing. Me and Neil then joined her in the laughing, it was pretty funny after all. I just wanted Skylar to stop being so angry and just calm down like he was when we first met.
