The Alpha. The beginning. So many questions, so little answers.
Also, thanks you @cspenser for an awesome cover!! :)

2. Evan

It's been 10 days, and I've tried, but I can't keep it in. It's hard to. Evan and I don't have any secrets. This was the only thing I'd ever kept from him. Now, I feel I need to tell him. The only thing is, if I do, I don't know how he'll react. He's not one to show his emotions.

So, I try to get him happy, before we go to the woods.

We normally just pick berries, and plants. Get fresh water from the stream. It's hard to find things to hunt anymore. I think that it'd be hard to even find a bird, or a rabbit. Much less, something that will last more than a day. It's also hard, because if we did, we'd just sit at home, waiting for a match.

We weren't like others, trying to hunt down people to kill, making our chances more likely. We wait for people to come to us. Most of the time, we don't get too many visitors. People know we took out the 3 strongest people who were most likely to make it to the alpha, but that's because of the fact that we are such a good team.

We know how to easily kill someone, with one knife. Most people go it alone. Sometimes, I feel bad for those people, because they have no family. Nobody to lean on. I'd go mad if everybody died except me. I was only 16 when she killed my parents. I wouldn't have survived the murder of our family. We'd all be dead.

As we walk down to the woods, to see what we'll eat today, I try to have a conversation with Evan.

I say shyly

he asks, as he flashes his usual charmed smile at me.

I stop talking for a second, as I get lost in his eyes

"There's something I need to tell you."

I say

his face fills with worry. He knows I've been acting weird lately, and he can tell he's about to find out why.

Just as I try to tell him, we hear a the leaves crinkle. We would be the only people to make them move, but were both sitting on tree stumps. Our feet not touching the ground.

"Who goes there?"

He asks.

We both have our knives at hand, ready to attack at any time.

"Come out!"

I yell, making sure everyone in the entire wood can hear.

An arrow shoots at a tree near by.

Evan throws the knife to where the person is.

We hear a sudden sigh, a gasp for air, and the sound of leaves breaking.

As we go to pick up the knife, I recognize the face Evan killed.

As he's cleaning it off in the stream, I remember.

"Aunt Mercy."

I say out loud.

The woman who killed my own family. We finally got revenge.
