For as long as I could remember, I have always loved mornings. Waking up with the sun; watching it slowly begin to ascend into the sky. It's my favorite part of the day. I slid out of bed and touched my bare feet to the soft carpet. I crept over to the window. As I watched the sun, I was surprised to hear a knock on my door. I opened it to reveal Nathan, my 'betrothed'. It's not that he was ugly, or rude, or had anything wrong with him. He was incredibly sweet to me, I just don't love him.
Our wedding was in one week. My parents insisted I marry soon, they said 'It will better my chances of being selected to be on the great council'. Apparently, they prefer to pick smart, dedicated, and married people to be on the council. My mother's childhood friend was accepted a few years ago, so she thinks she knows what they're looking for. Honestly I don't want to be on the council, but frankly I don't want to be a house wife. I could never be a teacher, I don't have the patience, and my body isn't cut out for labor. The council is my only hope of a job.
Truthfully my brother would be a better fit, but he's too young. I turned nineteen two weeks ago. According to the council, I was eligible. My brother Daniel is fifteen, which shouldn't make a difference considering he's probably smarter than all of them.
"Hi" Nathan said with a smile.
"Morning Nathan," I gestured him in to my room. "What brings you here so early?"
"Well, um, there is, um," He clearly had bad news and my brain began racing for an answer.
"There is what?" I urged him. "Spit it out."
"I, um, gotta go!" He hopped off the bed and practically sprinted down the room. I looked in the mirror to assure he wasn't running away in fright of my appearance. Surprisingly enough I didn't look terrible, which made me wonder what he was trying to say even more. It was torturous. All day, while I cleaned the house and made preparations for my wedding, a part of me wanted to find him and make him tell me. While the other knew I had work to do.
By the time I'd finished for the day it's four o'clock. I sat onto the sofa outstretching my arms as I yawned. I heard rapid knocking at my front door; glancing through the window I notice it's Nathan. I opened the door to find him pale and jittery. Like he was about to pop out of his skin.
"Violet, I um." He began shakily.
"What is it?" I questioned. "Is something wrong? Are you okay?" I hope he's not worried about the wedding. I don't know how I would be able to reassure him, when I'm not so sure it's the right choice in the first place.
"No, no, I'm fine. It's Rose." My heart dropped. Rose was my best friend from primary school. She stuck with me through everything and even helped me pass most of my classes. Without her I would have no hope of being on the council. I can't bear to think something has happened I her.
"W-w-w-what? Is she okay, is she hurt"" I can't even begin to imagine what had happened. "Can I see her?"
"Um that's the thing, she um, got banished.."
"WHAT?! WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY BANISH ROSE? She's a teacher what could she have done?!?" I became instantly enraged. How dare they banish someone as innocent as her. Well, maybe innocent is the wrong word. But in any case, this is ridiculous.
"She cursed in front of her students when she stubbed her toe. I found out this morning, but I couldn't bear to tell you." That's insane how could they banish someone over something so idiotic. Tears welled up in my eyes, my best friend has been taken away, forever. Nathan pulled me into his embrace, and walked me over to the sofa.
No sooner had we sat down, until a message was delivered. The screen in front of us lit up and the usual notification sounded. "You have a new job assignment. Please open to receive further information." Nathan pressed a button and the message continued. "It is our great pleasure, to inform you that you have been accepted to work for The Great Council, and one day have a seat, making decisions to better the world. Please report to Aurae in three days time." My mother rushed into the room.
"Congratulations darling-" she paused when she saw my state. "He told you, about-"
"Yes mother, he told me about how my best friend, banished by the council I now have to work directly for, so you can go brag about my job now." I know I shouldn't have snapped at my mother like that, but I had just gained so much life changing information in such a short period of time. "I think I just need some rest."
"Okay" Nathan helped me up to my room and I laid down. "Do you want anything?"
"A cup of tea with honey would be nice."
"Okay Violet, I'll bring it right up."
