Joey wouldn't answer his phone for about the fifth time I've called. We planned a date at our favorite restaurant. The restaurant we went to when we first got together. I remember the night so well... that's when I first got to know him. His personality struck me by surprise and his way with words made me fall for him instantly. But, by now our reservations have been taken by some one other than Joey and I.
I tried calling my brother to pick me up because I was on the other side of the city. But of course, he did not answer either. "Is today the 'Don't Answer Chloe When She's Calling' day?" I said to myself. It was a cold night and I figured I should start walking home. I hugged my coat tighter to my chest avoiding the brisk wind blowing in my face. My breath was visible only in the street lights, but some corners were dark and suspicious.
Something inside me told lift my head up and look up ahead. I squinted my eyes and saw something struggling to move on the ground. My heart began to quicken its speed and I forced my numb legs to walk faster towards the figure. When I got closer, my body stopped in its' tracks. My heart caught in my throat as I saw who was on the ground. Joey...
I instantly dropped my bag and ran over to his side. "Joey! Joey! What's going on? Are you hurt?" His eyes were barely open and his body was ice cold. I gathered his head and laid it in my lap. "Baby what's wrong?" I looked over his body and saw fresh blood appearing through his shirt. I took off my coat and laid it over him to keep him warm.
"Kevin... he...we were fighting and he pulled out a knife on me.." Joey could barely speak as I could see how much pain he was in. My eyes began to fill with tears as I reached over for my bag and I pulled out my phone. "Stay with me Joey. Stay with me, honey." I began to struggle to type in 911 as my fingers were numb.
"911, what's your emergency?" Tears fell down my face as I gripped onto Joey's hand and he squeezed tightly onto mine. "Please come quick to 37 Avenue. My boyfriend has been stabbed and he needs help. Please come quick. HURRY!" I threw down my phone and I held both of his cheeks in my hands, forcing him to look up at me.
"Joey, keep your eyes open. Please don't leave me. Please. I love you." His lips parted in a small smile as his eyes began to close. He finally forced out a few sentences. "Hey, Chlo...That was our first 'I love you' to each other..." He whispered, quietly. I looked down in his closing eyes as I managed a small smile as more tears fell down my cheeks and onto my hands. He began to stutter while muttering his last sentence, "Y-you have m-made these past few m-months the happiest moments of m-my life. I love you s-so much, Chloe."
I stroked my thumbs across his cheeks as I could feel his own tears falling down onto my fingers. His blood began seeping through my coat from his wound and I could see his hands and face becoming pale. "Please, don't leave me." I whispered quietly, while I pressed my forehead against his own.
His breathing began to slow down as I whispered my last words to him...but then, there was nothing. No noise. No movement. Nothing.
I looked down at him with his eyes closed and I barely croaked out, "Joey.. Joey". I grabbed his hand with my own and I squeezed it expecting a squeeze back...But there was nothing. Pain shot through my heart as I tried shaking his entire arm in order for him to wake up. "Joey!" I yelled, as I stared at his emotionless face. I began to cry hard as memories of us flew through my mind.
The laughs, the kisses, the jokes, the love we made...and how I fell in love with him in the first place. I ran my fingers through his hair and I leaned down and pressed my lips to his forehead as my tears fell onto his cheeks. I stared at his face and I hugged him closer to my body as I could hear the sirens coming closer and closer to us.
I felt a hand on my arm as I continued to hold him. "Ma'am, come with us. Please." I pulled my arm away as I did everything I could to hold him tighter in my arms. I didn't want to leave him... I wanted to just hold him and never let go. "Ma'am, you need to come with us. We need to check to see if you're okay."
I looked up and saw the officer looking down at me, while holding his hand out. More tears fell down my cheeks as I could tell this really was real. "I did everything I could... I...I tried to save him." Another officer grabbed my arm and pulled me up. I looked at him and I struggled to pull away but he was too strong. That's when I looked down at Joey who was trying to be resuscitated by the paramedics.
That's when I felt a sharp pain in my arm. I turned and looked to see a needle being pulled out. My arms and legs became tired... then my whole body gave way.
That's when I blacked out.
