We fall asleep in the meadow for some time, and when I wake up, it's afternoon. I hear a rumbling engine. I sit up and shake Shera awake. I glance over at the road and my heart stops. It's a cop car. Shera is only just stirring. We'll need to get out now. "Shera!" I whisper-yell. "Shera! The cops are out for blood! Get up, we have to get a move on!" She snaps awake and leaps up. The cops are striding toward us now, guns in hand but not pointed. They get up close to us and I say, "What do you want?" "We've been told someone -" he eyes us both in a gruff voice - "A girl in a black dress stole goods from a convenience store." "We don't know anything about that," I lie smoothly. "Has it been on the news, Carly?" I quickly think of a fake name for Shera. "I didn't see anything about it, Annie," she replies. "Well," the first cop says. "You two look conveniently associated with the case. Twins, eh?" I nod, figuring it's safe to be truthful about that part. "Having a dead ringer sure is helpful for crime like this." "I told you we don't know anything about it," I snap. "And how well can you lie?" he asks. "Very well," I grin menacingly. Then I lash out and punch him in the face. Shera kicks the second guy in the crotch. They both crumple to the ground and pull their guns. My cop is about to shoot Shera when I turn his gun up and it shoots into the sky. I snatch the gun, but Shera is frozen in fear. I snatch her cop's gun too and thrust it into her hands. "Defend with it!" I yell. Then I hear the second engine.
At first I think it's more cops and we're doomed, then I spiral around 360 degrees and it's a black Cadillac. The same model Max drives. Coincidence, I tell myself. But it can't be. The cops jump up and Shera and I poise our guns to shoot them. Max jumps out of the Cadillac and sprints up the hill to us. "A cop!" Shera squeals. "He's undercover!" She about kills my boyfriend, but in the nick of time, I yelp, "Nonono!" Shera stops. "That's my boyfriend, Max," I explain quickly. "Help!" I screech to Max. He snatches my cop up in a headlock and nearly snaps his neck. He doesn't, thank the lord. Shera's cop shoots while Max is occupied and snags Shera's shoulder. "OOOW!" She sobs. I run over and catch her as she drops to her knees. Blood is gushing from the clean hole in her shoulder. I burst into tears in the realization that my twin is going to die. Again.
