The Third Kingdom

A reluctant Princess. A Great Empire. A Kingdom in need of a Queen. Princess Zarai is the third of the Emperor's nine children, and heiress to the Third Kingdom of the Sea. A wild child by nature, and rebellious in every sense of the word, she is not going to be tied down just because a set of ancient rules say so. Haunted by what she witnessed five years earlier, Zarai is totally unaware of the immense power her secret holds inside of her. The man set to mentor her in the year leading to her ascension, General Kai of the Armed Forces, is not to be trifled with either. The two hate each other from the first moment, but are inexplicably drawn to each other. As the tempers flare and passions run high, can Zarai put up with the attractive prude of a man her father has chained to her, and will Kai's icy heart let the fierce Princess in, after being frozen for so long?

1. Prologue

She ran, twisting, turning, cutting corners. The darkness of the catacombs made navigation near impossible. She fell. It was gaining on her! Pure unadulterated terror took over her senses. She desperately picked herself up again.

"Run!" her mind screamed. So she ran.

I sat up in bed, stock still. It had been the nightmare again. The same one that had been haunting me the past week. I didn't know what I was running from, just felt the immediate need to get away. To escape.

I sighed, and turned over to my side. The moonlight was streaming through the balacony's glass doors, illuminating my quaters. The foor-poster I had slept in since childhood cast a familiar shadow across the room, hitting the ivory dressing table and the sinfully soft rugs from the Ninth Kingdom, and the wardrobe made from imported wood from the forests of the Second Kingdom.

I sighed again. I would miss this wing of the palace, the homeliness and the familiarity. I had spent my entire life here, but with just four days left till my seventeenth birthday, I would soon embark on the long journey to my ascension to the throne, as was tradition.

I was Princess Zarai, heiress to the Third Kingdom of the Sea, the southernmost of the Great Empire.

And in a year, I was to be Queen.
