29. Chapter 5 Part 5 (End of Chapter 5)
A heavy hand holds hers, leading her gently out of the door, though she is unresponsive, she still holds on tight. The heavy hand lets the girl lie herself down and relax. He admires her sleeping face, kneeling next to her and kissing her cheek.
“Sleep well, my love.” He whispers, somewhat tentative, as if he doesn’t really want anyone else to hear. His words are more said as a release, as when he has said them; he seems a little less tense. Even a smile crosses his lips, if only for a moment. Instead of leaving the room, he lies down next to her, locking the first door with a casual gesture of his heavy hand. The chill of the hard stone does not bother him, the cracks and damage do not trouble him, he lets his heavy hand touch the girl’s face and brush aside the unruly strands that have fallen across her lips. He lets his head drop and his eyes close.
The only movement comes from the light behind the third door, casting both their shadows on the wall. The shadows sway slowly, becoming more defined then fading again though there is no clear change in the light streaming under the door. They perform some kind of pulsing dance, though neither truly moves.
Still his heavy hand rests on her cheek, unconsciously curling her hair around its fingers. With a sharp tug the heavy hand pulls a single strand from her head, but she does not feel it and neither does he. The heavy hand performs its task alone, unguided by the restraint of its owner. But as he drops into a deeper sleep, the heavy hand drops her hair and joins him in his rest.
