The Third Door [NaNoWriMo 2014]

"I died. Now I live. But I live within the boundaries of my head. What happens on the outside is beyond my control." Constructive criticism is very welcome on this. I will be updating in small sections, but I will probably republish this with proper chapter splits when I finish it. © 2014 Parsavagely

53. Chapter 11 Part 2

The heavy hand strokes the girl’s head gently, soothing her as she lets the screams leave her. They kneel together, in the centre of the room. Both cry, one out of pain, the other out of guilt.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispers again and again. She keeps crying, but her reason begins to change. The pain numbs, tears keep falling, but now with a smile. Not forced, but out of practice.

“Thank you,” she says.

His heavy hand stops.

“Why thank me?”

“You tried,” she replies.

Her eyes close slowly, leaving him to cradle her unconscious body. He wonders how hard it would be to heal her wounds, how difficult it would be to remove her scars. He wonders if he would recognise her, if she was not marred with the wounds of all her years. Of course he would, surely?

What did it take to make her smile? How hard was that? He had to give up his personal gain; he knew he’d gone too far. The final test was too much; it twisted her mind too far. His hope of escape from this world is gone, now his only purpose is to help her escape.

How hard will it be to let go? How many times will he cry over her? Who could possibly know? Not him, but what about whoever is truly in control, if there is someone, do they know the answers? Do they truly know what they’re doing?

They can’t.

Otherwise, how would any of this happened? How could his heavy hand learn to be gentle or kind? Why would someone let him rebel? The consequences don’t scare him, not at all, he knows that he will lose her. But he is ready for that. So, how can he be in control? How can someone who cannot even keep his slaves in check expect to run reality? If God exists, he is a cruel and foolish God. There is no question of that.

His heavy hand gently lifts her from the ground, carefully carrying her towards the first door, but stopping just before entry. He stands still, turning robotically and stepping towards the second door.

His heavy hand throws her to the ground and kicks her through the frame.

His eyes are wide, shimmering with tears as he watches himself hurt her frail body.

“Damn you! Damn you! Damn. You.” He shouts, as his heavy hand closes the door, plunging him into darkness.
