I slowly opened her window and sat down next to her, looking at how peaceful she was when she was sleeping. All of a sudden she sat up and stared at me in fear.
"Where's that boyfriend of yours?" I asked sarcastically.
She just looked at me with fear. Finally she realized what was going on and jumped off her bed, grabbing her crutches. "Get away from me." She spat.
I slowly walked closer. "What's the matter babe. Not happy to see your first love?"
"I never loved you." She shot trying to back towards the door.
I moved closer to the door shutting it slowly. I slowly looked around her room. It was a lot different from when I last saw it. Her walls were now white instead of purple. She had taken down all her dog pictures and replaced them with pictures of her and her friends. One picture caught my eye. It was her and Matt with frosting all over them and her room. She had drawn a little blue heart in the corner of the picture. I got so mad. She looked so happy in that picture. I wanted that to be me instead of Matt. I walked over to that picture and took it off the wall.
"What are you doing?" She asked nervously. I walked over to her and ripped the picture in half. Her eyes started tearing up. I got so mad that just a picture of him could get her so upset. I walked over to a picture of her and one of her friends.
"Who's this?" I asked.
"Katelyn." She answered.
I picked up the picture of then and ripped it into 4 pieces. She screamed and ran over dropping her crutches. She collapsed and screamed again as I started taking pictures off the wall and ripping them in half.
I was unpacking some things in my room when I heard a scream coming from Sarah's house. I ran over to the window and heard a crashing sound. I saw her run past the window and then disappear. I heard another scream. I got really worried. Suddenly I heard her yelling. "Stop it! No don't do that! Put that down. Get away!" She sobbed.
I opened my window and jumped into the tree right next to our windows. I climbed all the way to the other side and into her room. I saw her lying on the floor holding a ripped up picture with her crutches on the other side of the room. All of a sudden I saw a guy taking her pictures off the wall and ripping then up. "Hey!" I yelled which caused then both to turn to me. "What are you doing?" I screamed at him.
"Well well well." He slowly said walking over to me. "So your Matt." I looked down at Sarah who had an expression on her face that was a mix of fear and anger.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Sarah's boyfriend." he said slowly coming closer.
I didn't know that Sarah had a boyfriend. Why would she say yes to Derek then.
I glanced down to see Sarah trying to grab her crutches quietly so he wouldn't notice.
He walked over to me and gripped my shirt. "You better stay away from her or else." He hissed in my face.
"Or else what?" I spat back.
He pulled his arm back and punched me in the eye. I quickly punched him in the stomach. Before I could punch him again he was thrown to the floor with a cut on the back of his head. "Get out of my house!" Sarah yelled and he quickly got up and ran out the door.
I can't believe that just happened. I looked around my room to see all my favorite pictures ripped up. A set of tears formed in my eyes. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see Matt kneeling in front of me with a concerned look on his face. "Are you okay"
I looked up at him. "Mentally or physically?" I asked a tiny smile formed on my face. I was so glad he came.
"Both." He chuckled.
"Well physically, yeah I'm fine other then my leg hurting." I stopped and sighed. "Mentally, I'm not sure." I looked around my room again, my eyes landing on the picture of me and Katelyn. I bent down and picked up the peaces, putting it on my desk and putting it in order. I looked down and sighed as a tear dripped down onto it. Matt came over and looked at the picture, then at me. He picked up another picture and put it back together.
"If you want, I an help you tape all these pictures back together." He offered.
I made an attempt to smile at him. "Thanks, I'd love your help. But first, are you okay?" I asked examining his eye.
"Yeah I'm fine." He forced a smile. I could tell he was in pain.
"No your not." I told him. "Come on." I said. He followed me downstairs and into the kitchen where I gave him an ice pack for his eye. He brought the ice pack upstairs and we started taping pictures.
It took us an hour. I finally picked up the last one. It was the one of me and Matt. I looked at it for a second before tapping it together. I hung it up and we sat in silence. I was still staring at the picture of me and Katelyn when Matt said something.
"Who's that?" He asked referring to Katelyn.
"That's Katelyn." I said fighting the urge to cry again.
"I don't ever see you guys hang out."
"She died 2 months ago." I said a tear slipping out.
He looked at me with sympathy. "I'm so sorry."
I just shook my head. "I'm sick and tired of people saying that to me. I'm trying to get over her and everyone's just bringing it up again."
"You know sometimes it's better to talk about it then keep it inside. That just makes it harder to get over it." He said studying my face. "You don't have to though."
"I meet her in 6th grade. Caitlyn introduced us because they meet over the summer. We got along really well. Soon she would sleepover almost every weekend. Then last year she just stopped coming to school. We could never get in contact with her. She disappeared off the face of the earth." I laughed a little. "Then she came in school a couple of times. A week after, she went missing. The police found her body in her shed. She committed suicide. " I couple of tears slid down my cheeks.
Matt leaned over and gave me a hug. He pulled away and wiped my tears away. My heart was beating so fast. "Hey. It's okay." he said in a soothing voice. Just then my phone rang. I took a deep breath and picked it up.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hey you never texted me." He said.
I knew immediately that it was Derek. "Sorry about that. I had something important I need to take care of. I don't think I can make it tonight. Something came up. I really sorry." I told him.
"It's okay." He said sounding disappointed. "Maybe tomorrow."
"Yeah. Tomorrow." I said smiling a bit. "I'll see you in school. Bye." I said hanging up.
I hung up to find Matt looking at me. "What?" I asked.
"So what's the deal with you and Derek?" He asked.
"Nothing really, he just asked me out." I told him calmly.
"So do you like him or something."
"I guess. He's nice."
"Okay." He said. I looked over at him. He looked sort of upset. I thought I saw something unusual in his eyes. What was it? Sadness? Jealousy? It could be that. I probably was just imagining it. "Well I have to go." He said standing up.
"Wait." I said making him turn around. "Can you stay the night?" I asked sort of embarrassed. He looked at me for a second. "I just don't feel comfortable staying here alone. You don't have to if you don't want to."
"Sure." He said smiling a little.
We went downstairs and I heated up chicken nuggets. We talked while eating.
After dinner, We went into Sarah's room. She sat down at her desk and opened her backpack. I sat down on her bed and looked around her room. She had so many pictures on her walls. "I just have to do my homework." She told me.
"Okay." I said. "Take your time."
After about 10 minutes she put her things away.
"Well that was fast." I said.
"Well it was easy." She told me.
She came and sat down next to me. "So." She said awkwardly.
"What do you want to do?" I asked.
"How about a movie?" She suggested.
"Okay." I said as she went over to pick out a movie. We decided to watch Mr.Peabody and Sherman. Halfway through the movie she got up to put on pajamas. She went into the bathroom and came out 3 minutes later with fuzzy owl pants and a dark blue sports bra.
I watched her as she came over and and sat down next to me again. "What?" She asked blushing a little.
"Nothing." I said as I turned my attention back to the movie.
