Looking from afar

Sarah has always been a nobody. She does well in school and she has a bunch of friends. Sarah is happy about her life, but nobody knows her in school. There is only one person Sarah wished would notice her. And that was Matt. Will Sarah always be watching from far away or will she find the courage to make something happen?

17. Do you still like her?

Sarah's POV

"Hey." I said as I walked next to Trisha.

She looked over at me and immediately looked worried. "What's wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing." I told her confused.

"Well then why are you crying?"

I felt my face to feel tears still on my cheeks. I guess I didn't wipe them off when I got out of the car. I wiped them away as I was I talking. "I was laughing." I told her chuckling a little bit.

"You were laughing by yourself?" She asked looking at me like I was crazy.

"No!" I exclaimed. "I was laughing with Matt." I said and she stopped short. I stopped and looked back at her. "What?"

"When were you talking to him?!" She asked almost attacking me.

"This morning." I said giving her a weird look. "After he left, I got ready and then he came back and picked me up."

She stood there her mouth hanging wide open. "He was at your house?" She asked slowly.

"Yeah." I said nodding my head. All of a sudden she screamed and hugged be causing a couple of people to look at us.

"YOU HAVE TO TELL ME EVERYTHING!!!!!!" She screamed. And I told her, piece by piece until lunch.

I sat and took out my lunch. I listened to what everyone was talking about for a couple of minutes.

"I heard he's still in love in with her even though he broke up with her." Ashley was saying.

"Who." I asked.

She stopped and looked at me almost as if she was sorry for me. She sighed and finally said it. "Matt."

I looked at her stunned. I dropped my sandwich and stared at her. I thought he said he wanted a break from her. Well that doesn't mean that he doesn't still like her. What if he really does. A bunch of thought were running through my mind. I finally thought I had a chance with him, even if it was really tiny.

"Sarah?" Abby said softly. "Are you okay." She asked rubbing my back.

I finally closed my mouth and swallowed. I took a deep breath. "Yeah. I'm fine." I breathed out. The for the next 20 minutes I stared down at my sandwich not talking or eating. Suddenly I felt someone tap on my shoulder. I jumped and looked up to find a smiling Derek.

"Hey." I said and smiled.

"Hey." He said smiling back. I could feel everyone at my table looking at us. They had all stopped talking.

"I'm sorry I had to cancel last night." I told him.

"It's fine. So are we still on for tonight or should we plan for tomorrow night?" He asked.

I was about to say tomorrow night when I thought of something. Why should I be so sad the I don't have any chance with Matt. I f he didn't like me, that's his loss. I should sit around and mope. I looked up again and smiled. "I'm free tonight."

He smiled from ear to ear. "I'll text you later." He said walking away.

I turned back around to find everyone staring at me. "What?" I snapped annoyed that they couldn't mind their own business.

"I thought you were still sad about Matt." Trisha said.

"Well if he doesn't like me, why should I sit around a wait for him when I could go on a date with Derek." i said

They all looked at me silently then slowly they went back to their conversations. I looked around the cafeteria until I saw Matt and Kayla talking, a big smile on Matt's face. Suddenly Derek walked over to them. I saw him tell Matt something. Matt looked around, his eyes resting on me. He looked almost hurt. Our eyes meet and I finally saw it. it was a mix of hurt and jealousy. Suddenly someone passed in between us. When he passed I looked back to were Matt was standing to find that he had left. I looked all around the cafeteria but couldn't find him.  What would he be jealous of? I thought he already had his dream girl. I spent the rest of the period trying to figure out what that meant.
