They Said it'd be Fun

16 year old Paige Harpman has always loved where she lives. Her small town life has been enough for her and she doesn't need anything else. When she finds out her family is moving to one of the largest cities in the world, Los Angeles, she's more than a little upset. Having to leave her friends behind is the hardest thing she has to do and who knows if she's going to make friends at her new school.

P.S. For the sake of this story David Beckham is still playing soccer for the L.A. Galaxy

6. Friends?

When I make it back home I go up to my room and turn on my laptop. As I wait for it to come on I walk downstairs and grab a water. I make it back to my room as soon as it turns on and I go on Skype seeing Owen's online. I click his name and wait for him to answer the video call. When his face comes on the screen a huge smile makes it's way to my lips. "Hey." I breath out taking in his appearance. Man I've missed him.

"Hey Paige." He lets a smile make it's way to his mouth and I swear I stopped breathing. "How are you?" I ask pulling my legs underneath my body.

"I'm good just got back from the gym."

"I thought you were going to Jess's?" I ask slowly not wanting to hear the answer. "I lied. I said that because I was jealous you were hanging out with another guy." His eyes fall to the floor as if he's embarrassed with his answer. "Hey, that's actually really sweet that you got jealous over me just hanging out with some guy."

"So he was just some guy?" Owen's eyes meet mine again and the smile is slowly making its way to his lips. I look away slightly thinking about the kiss I had with Brooklyn. Should I tell him? No I pushed him away so it's not like anything really happened. When I look back at his face I smile and nod my head.

We continue to talk for another hour when we both decide it's getting late and we should get off. When we say our goodbyes it's 9 o'clock here which means it's about midnight there. I go to the bathroom and bush my teeth before I put on my pjs and slide into bed.

Monday comes way to quickly and I groan as I fall out of bed and go to take a shower. When I get out I throw on jeans and a purple strapless top and curl my hair so loose curls just fall below my shoulders. I put on my silver flower necklace my sister got me for my birthday a few years ago and the earrings Owen bought me for Christmas last year. I paint my nails purple and then grab my purple heels and walk downstairs.

The good thing about this school is everyone dresses like they just got off the runway and I love it. I always wanted to dress like this at school but then I would stand out to much and that's definitely not something I wanted. I grab a granola bar and my soccer clothes before walking outside to wait for the bus.

It comes ten minutes later and I take a seat in the same place I always do. The next stop is Brooklyn's and I hold my breath as he walks onto the bus not even bothering to glance at me as he sits down in the back. Well than, at least I'm not childish.

When we get to school I walk straight to homeroom not bothering to wait for Brooklyn to explain his cold behavior. "Hey Paige wait up!" I turn around to see Alexis, a girl who's in my math class running to catch up to me. "Hey what's up?"

"Please tell me you did the math homework! I completely forgot about it." The desperation in her voice almost makes me laugh as I pull out my math notebook. "Here just give it to me in class." She says thank you and runs off in the other direction. Alexis is probably the closest friend I have here, besides Brooklyn of course. The bell rings and I hurry up to get to first period so I'm not late.

Lunch comes sooner than expected and I grab my food and look around for anywhere to sit. "Paige over here." I see Alexis waving me over and I smile as I walk up to sit with her. "Hey." I take a seat and start to eat my food. "So what's going on between you and Brooklyn?" I nearly choke on my sandwich and take a quick sip of water to get it down. "What, what do you mean?" I look at Alexis and she has a sly smile on her face.

"You know what I mean. Last week when ever I saw you, you were with him and vice versa. And today it's like you never even knew each other." I look down thinking over what she said. She's totally right and I hate it. I take a deep before I try to explain what's been going on. "Well on Saturday we were hanging out and it was great. And then he kissed me." Alexis gasps and her smile gets bigger if that were even possible. "I kissed him back but then I pushed him away."

"What? Why?" Alexis looks shocked as she stares me down. "Because I have someone back home that I care about and I don't know what to do about it." She opens her mouth to say something but I quickly cut her off. "Don't worry Brooklyn already gave me the speech about how nothing is going to come of the thing I have with the boy back home. And he's right but I just can't help but to hold on." I put my head on the table and I feel Alexis rub my back soothingly. "Hey it's ok. I think I might be able to help." I open my eyes and look at her with a questioning look.

"How? How on Earth are you going to be able to help?"

"Well think about it, do you like L.A?" I stare at her wondering how this is helping but she just gives me a 'humor me' look and I sit up before answering. "Yes, I love it actually. A lot more than when I first came here."

"Exactly! You love L.A. and you feel guilty for wanting to be here and forgetting about your home town." I'm still confused on what point she's trying to get across and I think she can tell. "Soooo, holding on to this guy is your only connection to back home and you don't want to let it go because that's like letting everything from before go." I look at Alexis and realize she actually made a very valid point. "I think you're right."

"Well of course I am." I laugh and get up giving her a hug before throwing my trash away and heading to next period.

The end of the day comes and it's time for me to head to soccer practice. When I get there Chad is talking to the head coach whose name is Steve. I walk over to my teammates and start stretching. "Paige come here." Steve yells over to me and I jog over to both coaches. "Yes coach." I place my hand over my eyes to shield them from the sun.

"Well Chad here says you've got some serious skill, and that I should give you a chance. So that's what I'm going to do. But you only get one chance ok?" I nod my head vigorously and say "ok thank you." I run over and finish stretching before Steve blows his whistle calling us over. "Paige is going to be practicing with us today so no one take it easy on her." Everyone laughs and we split off into two groups and start doing drills.

By the end of practice coach decides we are going to scrimmage so he splits us off into two teams. The starters and then the subs. I'm with the subs obviously and put on the yellow penny that's thrown to me. The whistle blows and play begins.

I get the ball and quickly dribble past one player before passing it off to a teammate and getting it back right away. I look up and see I have an open shot, I take one more touch before aiming for the corner and the ball fly's in. My team congratulates me before play starts over once again.

The final whistle blows and we all walk over to grab our stuff. "Paige you did great today." Steve says and gives me a pat on the back. "Does this mean I get to keep practicing with you guys?" I look up at him with a hopeful look in my eyes and he gives me a smile and a nod before walking off to his stuff.

I can't stop smiling as I grab my bag and walk off to the parking lot. I call my mom and she tells me she's on her way and to just wait a few more minutes. I take a seat on the curb when I hear someone sit next to me. I look over and see Brooklyn looking at the ground. "Hey." He says quietly and I do the same. "We need to talk." We say at the same time and I gesture for him to go first.

"Look I had no right to say those things to you. If you're still hung up on someone than I'm in no position to ruin that, and I am just so sorry I said those mean things yesterday." He looks me in the eyes the whole time telling me he's telling the truth.

"I'm sorry too. Everything you said was right and although I do have feelings towards you I'm just not ready yet." He nods his head before looking at me again. "That's ok. I understand. Friends?" He sticks out his hand and has a smile on his face. I smile and shake his hand "Friends."

Aww they're friends! I wonder how long that can last.
