The Academy

Westwood Academy is known as one of the most prodigious boarding schools for girls.
For girls.
Not boys.
Every logo had the words "For Girls" printed with it, I thought that meant it was set in stone.
So why did the new building have a sign in front printed with "Boy's Dorms" in clean silver letters?

Chapter 6

Nicole’s POV

“Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” I told Becca and Christina for probably the fourth time already this morning. Liz and I were already ready and we wanted to leave for class but Becca and Christina kept insisting that they were almost done and that we should just wait for them.

We had already missed the hour that the dining hall was opened for a quick breakfast. I was already running a bit behind schedule because Becca talked me into letting her add on to the makeup that I normally put on. I will agree that it was worth the extra minutes because it was subtle yet made a difference, but now she was well as Christina were taking too long to get themselves ready.

“Let’s just leave,” Liz said after a few more minutes passed. I nodded and we both got up from the chairs we were sitting in and grabbed our purses and notebooks.

“We’re leaving,” Liz announced to them and before they could answer or protest, the two of us were out the door.

“I hope its not going to be like this every morning,” I said as we walked down the hall to the elevators.

“You and me both,” she agreed, “I get they want to impress the boys but still, I don’t even have enough energy to get as dressed up as they want to be,”

I was glad that Liz was finally starting to agree with me when it came to having the boys here, I knew that she couldn’t be completely for it like Becca and Christina were. We walked across campus to get to our first class, which unfortunately was on the complete other side that our dorm was so we were almost running there so we would get there on time.

There was hardly anyone walking outside now since everyone was already in their first class except for Liz and I right now. Sure Becca and Christina weren’t in their class yet, but the building they both had to go to was right next to our dorm building. When we walked into our class, everyone was still talking as they waited for class to start so no one really noticed us come in.

We looked for two opened seats that were next to each other so we could sit together. Liz found some at the table in the second row so we walked over there and sat down and started just to talk about what we were expecting from this class.

We talked about the things that we had heard about this teacher and one of those things was that he was big on group projects and also that he likes to call people out on things, mostly those who don’t listen in class or do something to provoke him. Liz had tried to bring up the topic of the boys in this class, but I quickly changed the topic back to what I want to talk about involving this class.

I noticed Liz looking around at all the boys in this class though, and I couldn’t help but look too. There was probably close to an even number of each in this class which was good I guess although I’d rather it’d be just girls, but of course there was nothing that I could so about that. I couldn’t see the face of the boy in front of me, but that hair looked very familiar.

I had a feeling I knew who it was but I didn’t want to say to myself that it was him because I really didn’t want a class with him. He probably didn’t even remember me anyway so it shouldn’t even matter that I had this class with him.

Once class began, the teacher called on Harry to pass out the syllabus. He walked all the way around the room and I watched as he came to my row last.

After he had handed one to Liz, he completely skipped me and kept on walking. I wasn’t sure what to think at first. Did he do that on purpose just because he could or did he really not notice that I was there?

“You forgot to give me one,” I said once I knew that I wasn’t going to get one unless I said something.

“Oops,” I heard him say as he turned back around and walked over to me.

He smirked at me as he placed the paper on the table in front of me, and I now knew that he had not given me one on purpose. I looked away from him and focused my attention on the paper in front of me now as the teacher told him to hurry up.

Our teacher who then introduced himself as Mr. Thomas told us to start reading over the syllabus as he began to take roll. He went through the names rather quickly so he could get that out of the way. I was listening for my name more than I was reading the paper because I didn’t want to not hear it.

“Nicole Matthews,”

“Here,” I said quickly and looked up, he just put a mark with his pen on the paper and continued to say names.

After I had said I was here, I noticed Harry, who was sitting right in front of me, turn around and gave me a smug smile almost as if to say ‘I know your name now’ since I wouldn’t tell him last night. After he was done taking roll, he explained everything that was going to be taught in his class and what all he expected form us.

Once he had finished that, he went on to give us our first assignment of the year. I heard annoyed groans coming from some people in the classroom, but I was actually okay with an assignment already, it would give me something to do whenever my friends starting talking about the boys and all that.

“Calm down everyone, it’s not a big assignment,” he told us once a few people started complaining.

“It’s going to be a partner project,” he said, and I instantly turned to Liz, we were always great at partner projects.

“I know we have many new students this year so this is going to be more of a getting to know each other project. I’m going to assign you each a partner, it may be a person of the same gender and it may not, either way I want no complaining. I have questions that I’m going to give each of you and you have to get reasonable answers and write them down. Remember you all are seniors so I expect well thought out answers, I don’t want you to blow through this in an hour with one sentence answers,” he told us, and I was now starting to regret getting my hopes up about this project.

“I expect that you all will do this on your own time as we will not be working on this in class,” he told us, and then he grabbed a piece of paper off his desk that I’m guessing had the names of the partners on it.

I was pretty nervous to see whom I was getting paired up with for this project. I anxiously waited as each name was called, wondering if my name was going to be called next.

“Victoria and Emily,” he said, my name could be next,

“Alexis and Cory,” he called out next.

“Liz,” he began and I quickly turned to look at Liz as she anxiously waited for him to say who she was partnered up with, “and Liam,”

“Who’s Liam?” Liz whispered to me.

“No idea,” I said back.

We looked behind us but no one made an acknowledgement to us that they were Liam.

“Next is,” Mr. Thomas said and paused as he looked down at his paper again.

“Nicole and Harry,” he said.

Right after he said that Harry turned around and gave me that same stupid smirk that he seemed to always have on his face. I rolled my eyes and I looked away from him as the rest of the names were called.

Once he had said everyone’s partners, he told us to go find whom we had been paired up with and then come up to his desk to get the questions. Liz went to go look for her partner, Liam, and unfortunately I already knew where mine was. I walked up to get the questions and then slowly made my way over to where Harry was sitting.

“So we’re partners for this,” Harry said as I sat down.

“I think that’s been established already,” I told him as I handed him one of the lists of the questions.

“So Nicole,” he began, the smug smile back on his face since he had figured out my name, “How long have you been at this school?” he asked me, reading the first questions.

“Since I’ve been old enough,” I told him.

“According to the rules of this assignment, you’re supposed to give me a well thought out answer,” he said to me, and I sighed because I knew he was right.

I really didn’t want to tell him anything about my life though, he didn’t need to know anything about me, this whole thing was ridiculous. I felt like I was going to completely embarrass myself, talking to a boy is so different from talking to one of my friends.

“Let’s just get the basic answers to the questions and then go back and add more to them later,” I told him, I wanted to think about what I wanted to say about some of these questions that he was going to ask me.

“Um okay,” he said. What I just said probably sounded stupid, but I didn’t care, I couldn’t care less about what he thought of me.

“So-” I was cut off by the sound of the bell ringing, and I couldn’t be more thankful.

I wanted to walk out with Liz, but she was still talking to her partner, and I really had to go because my next class was on the other side of campus. I grabbed my notebook and the papers that I received in this class and walked out of the building.

As I was walking across campus, I noticed someone now walking next to me.

“Left the classroom pretty fast,” I heard a deep voice say and I looked next to me and saw Harry.

“My class is at the other side,” I told him as I sped up my pace, but he only sped up as well.

“What class?” he asked me.

I wanted to tell him just to leave me alone right now, but we had a project that we had to complete together so I was trying not to be as rude to him.

“English,” I answered.

“Mrs. Walker?”

“Yes,” I said, hoping that he didn’t know that for the reason I thought.

“I’ll save you a seat,” he smiled at me and then quickened his pace as I stopped walking.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said to myself and then began walking again.

I could still see him walking, and I realized that he dressed different than most of the guys here. He was wearing tight black jeans and a black shirt while all the other guys were wearing loser fitting jeans or khaki shorts. He better not save me a seat in my next class.
