When I woke up, it took me some time to realize where I was. But as soon as I felt Luke's arm around me, I remembered what happened last night. But I also realized my toes were freezing because the blanket wasn't big enough.
'Luke. Luke.' I whispered. 'We have to get up.'
He moaned, and rubbed his eyes. 'Morning, babe.' His voice was raspy. 'What time is it?'
I checked my phone. 'It's half past seven.'
He gasped. 'Half past seven? But then why did you wake me..' And he closed his eyes again.
I chuckled a little. He was certainly not a morning person. 'I know it's early, but we should also dress up. And what if people see us like this? Well get in trouble.'
Luke opened his eyes again. 'That's right...' He moaned. 'Well I guess we should go back to our bungalows.'
He sat up. 'Damn, it's cold. Are you okay?' He looked at me.
I smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine. Just a little cold.'
'Well okay then.' He stared into the distance.
'What are you thinking about?' I asked.
He blinked a couple of times. 'Oh nothing. I just realized it's the last day of camp. It all went so fast!'
I had to agree on that. It felt like my life had changed in only a night.
Luke looked at me. 'You know what? Even though this wasn't my first camp here, it has definitely been my best camp.' He stroked my cheek. 'Because of you.' and he kissed me.
But after a second, he suddenly stopped. 'Fuck, there are people coming. We gotta go before they'll see us.'
I turned around and saw a group of boys coming our way. We quickly stood up, grabbed our stuff and ran away as fast as we could.
Luke quickly said bye, kissed me on the cheek, and we both went to our own cabins.
When I opened the door, it was completely silent. Everybody was still sleeping, so I decided to crawl into my bunk without waking anyone.
I almost fell asleep, but then I heard Mandy whisper. 'Hanna, where have you been? I was so worried.'
I opened my eyes. 'Uhm, I want to explain it, but not here. Let's go outside'.
We dressed up and walked towards the main building, while I told her about last night. Mandy didn't interrupt me and she seemed to be impressed.
But then she stopped walking as if she had just realized something. 'Wait. You guys didn't... do 'it', right?'
I laughed. 'No, of course not! We know each other only for like, two days. Well, officially much longer of course, but not like this. Who do you think I am?'
She rolled her eyes. 'I know, but I was just curious...' She acted mysteriously.
'Are you trying to tell me something...?' I thought about last night, and remembered who she left with. 'Wow. Wait. Did you and Toby...?'
She giggled and started walking faster.
'No way! You slept with Toby?!' I yelled.
'Shh! Shut up!' She laughed. 'And yes, I did. It was amazing, in case you wanted to know.'
I was confused. 'But.. where? And how? I mean, did no one hear you...?'
We entered the building.
'No, of course not!' She whispered. 'We were here, in the main building all night.'
I wanted to sit down on the green couch, but Mandy stopped me.
'I wouldn't go sit there, if I were you', she giggled. 'Things happened there...'
I didn't hesitate and ran to a chair. 'My god', was all I could say. And Mandy just kept giggling.
Luke didn't show up at breakfast, but it didn't surprise me. I thought he was probably sleeping. But when he didn't answer his phone, I got a little worried, so I decided to go look for him.
When I got at his cottage, the door was opened, but there was no one inside. I checked the toilets, but he wasn't there either.
I panicked a little. I didn't know where else he could be, so I started to walk around.
Then I saw someone walking behind the trees, and I heard a soft, whispering voice.
I got closer and saw it was Luke, indeed. He was talking to someone on the phone. I couldn't hear what he was saying, but he seemed stressed, almost nervous. Then he ended his conversation, turned around and saw me. I didn't do anything, I was just standing there.
'Hi, uhm.. I didn't hear you coming.' Luke tried to keep his voice calm, but I could hear something was wrong.
'Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I was just.. Looking for you. Are you okay?'
He faked a smile and said: 'Yeah, I'm totally fine. I think we should go and pack our stuff, I mean I don't know when the bus leaves..'
I checked my phone. 'Uhm.. We have two hours left. But I packed my bags already, so if you want I can help you!'
He nodded. 'Yeah, sure. I just have to go to the toilet, so I'll meet you in a second.' And he walked away.
For a second I just stood there. I wasn't sure if I had done anything wrong, or if he had just received terrible news. I told myself not to worry about it and walked away.
Luke was lying on his bed when I came in.
'Come on! We've got work to do.' I said.
He moaned. 'Why can't you just do it for me?'
I knew he wasn't going to give in, so I started grabbing his stuff.
'Are these yours?' I pointed at a pink hamburger underwear.
He smiled. 'Yeah, they're mine. My mom bought them for me, she thinks I actually still like that stuff.'
'You don't?', I asked.
'Well..maybe I do..' And we both laughed.
I started folding his clothes and underwear and put them in his bag. I could see Luke was staring at me.
'Uh..is something wrong?' I asked.
He blinked and looked away. 'N-no..nothing.'
An uncomfortable silence. 'Do you even realize how beautiful you are?' He suddenly asked.
I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear and looked at him. I didn't quite know what to say, so I smiled a little.
'Come here', he said and he opened his arms.
I walked towards him and layed down in his arms. His hands felt soft as he touched my cheek. His hair smelled like autumn leaves and a bit of perfume. I slowly fell asleep.
When I woke up, Luke was trying to fit his shoes into his bag. I yawned, but he didn't notice I was awake.
'What time is it?' I asked.
He looked over his shoulder. 'Good, you're awake. We've got ten minutes till the bus leaves.'
I got out of bed. 'But then we should hurry! Are you done with your bag? I still have to pick up mine.'
He smiled. 'Oh, no. The bus driver is always too late. He smokes a lot. But I'm done, so we can get your bag and go to the main building.'
We took my bag and walked to the bus. When we got closer, I could see almost everyone was sitting in the bus already.
'Uh...' I said, and looked at Luke.
But he didn't worry about it at all. 'It's fine, don't worry.' And he didn't seem to go walking faster.
We put our bags in the luggage space in the back of the bus and got in. There weren't two seats next to each other, so we had to sit seperately.
'I'll go sit next to Toby, you can sit with one of the leaders.' Luke pointed at the boy sitting in the back.
'Sure.' I said and sat down next to Miranda. She was busy checking a list with names.
She stood up and said: 'okay, I think we've got everyone', and looked at the bus driver. He nodded and started the bus. It was time to go home.
