70. Chapter 76 : Talk With Ashton

Helen's POV

"Ow! That hurts!" Luke whined.

"Sit still," I said and continued to dab the wet towel on his wounds.

"It burns," He said.

"Dammit Luke, stop moving or else I'm not going to be able to clean the blood off and its going to get infected," I said.

He huffed but eventually was able to sit still and I wiped all the blood off.

I heard Calum groan.

"I need an ice pack," He said and started to get up but I stopped him.

"No, I'll get it," I said.

He nodded.

"Can you get me two, please," Luke said. "My knuckles are sore and throbbing."

"Yea, my shoulder is aching," Ashton said.

"I'll take an ice pack too, Helen," Michael spoke up.

"Yea, sure," I said and went into the garage.

I opened the small freezer that held the medical ice packs.

I grabbed five of the packs and went back to the living room.

Calum was laying on the couch and the other three were sitting back on the cushions.

I placed the ice pack on Calum's head, he held it in place.

"Thanks, babe," he said.

I smiled a little.

I handed the ice packs to Michael and Ashton.

They placed the packs on their wounds.

"My right ear is hot," Michael sighed in relief as he raised the cold pack to his ear.

"How did that happen?" I asked Michael.

"I guess some guy socked my ear," He replied.

I nodded.

"Place your hands on your lap," I told Luke.

He did and I put the ice packs on his red and swollen knuckles.

I finished wiping to blood off Luke's two wounds.

One on the corner of his lip and the other just above his eyebrow.

I grabbed a white tube and twisted the top off. I squeezed it until a clear jelly emerged from the opening.

"What's that?" Luke asked as I put a dot of the jelly on my index finger.

"Its going to help the cuts heal faster," I replied.

I spread some of the jelly on his two cuts.

"Its cold," Luke said.

"It's suppose to be," I replied.

"Can I get some of that?" Calum asked.

I looked over at him, "Of course," I replied.

I grabbed another cool wet towel and knelt next to Calum.

"My elbow burns," He said.

I gently lifted his arm up and saw that his elbow had a huge red scrape.

It had blood on it and I began dabbing the towel as gentle as I could.

"Fuck, Luke's right it does sting," Calum said.

"Told you," Luke said.

Michael stood up.

"Where's the bathroom?" He asked.

I pointed to the hallway, "First door to the left."

He shuffled his feet forward and a couple seconds later I heard the door close and lock.

I gently spread the jelly on the wound.

"Hold on," I told Calum.

I went back to the garage and opened a wooden cabinet. I grabbed a puffy white gauze and some bandage.

I closed the cabinet and went back to Calum.

I placed the gauze over the scrape and started wrapping the bandage around it.

"How do you know all this?" Ashton asked.

"I took sports medicine for a semester," I replied and continued to wrap.

Michael plopped back down on the couch.

"Not too tight, right?" I asked Calum.

"No, its fine," He said.

"Okay all done," I said.

"Thanks."

"Look, I'm sorry for what happened. I feel guilty because I dragged you into this. I didn't want for it to lead into a fight. Should have stopped it sooner. I was just in shock," I said. "I'm so stupid," I whispered the last part.

"It's not your fault," Luke said.

"Yea, none of us planned on getting in a fight. Plus we wouldn't jut let Brad get away with that," Calum added.

"Calum's right," Michael agreed.

"You didn't drag us into this, Helen. We chose to be here," Ashton said.

I shook my head, "Still."

I ran up the stairs and into my bedroom. I grabbed my iPod from my nightstand and went back down the stairs.

I plugged the iPod into the surround system and played some The 1975.

These guys are probably exhausted.

I had a played all of The 1975's slow songs. Along with other bands or artists.

The soothing music played from the speakers.

The guys closed their eyes.

I stood up and quietly walked out of the living room and into the backyard.

Billie Joe was laying next to the pool.

"Catching some sun, boy?" I asked.

He lifted his head and looked at me.

I smiled and sat on a chair in the shade.

I scrolled through Twitter then Instagram. Checked all my SnapChat stories and of course Madison and Charlize's snapchat stories always cracked me up.

On one of them they caught Josh and Brooke kissing behind the school.

Another showed Emily and Nena pulling a prank on Marly, Meg, Annabelle, Clary and Sarah.

Taylor and Katy had an arm wrestling match.

It didn't show who won.

I heard the glass door open.

I looked over my shoulder. It was Ash.

"Hey Ashton, what's up?"

"Nothing, just wanted some fresh air," he said and sat in the chair next to me.

I nodded.

"Your pool is huge," He said.

"Yea it is," I laughed slightly.

"Hey, can I ask you a question?"

"Yea, what is it?" I asked.

"What did Brad say right before everything broke loose?"

I pursed my lips.

"He, uh, he said 'I should have hit you harder before you left.'" I replied.

"Who does that?" Ashton asked. "I don't know why some guys have to be so cruel."

"I mean he chose the path to take."

"Was he really that controlling? Did he chose your wardrobe?" Ashton asked.

I nodded.

"He made me feel like a worthless piece of shit. And I think I'm starting to believe him. I'm starting to think he's right," I felt tears forming in my eyes. "And me being so helpless, was easily manipulated by him. I was a puppet to him. He never loved me, I was a trophy to him. A prize.

"I'm so stupid for ever believing him. Maybe I really did deserve getting him. And maybe he really should've hit me harder. I don't deserve a great brother like Luke. I've lied to him so many times. I don't deserve my friendship with you nor Michael. You guys are great and I'm just so dishonest in everything I do. Calum deserves someone better. Not me. I feel like I tie him down, he could have any girl in the world. I'm so fucking worthless."

I broke down in tears.

I've never told anyone that, and I feel like Ashton would understand.

"Hey don't say that to yourself," Ashton said.

I felt him pull me into a hug. I hugged him back.

"You're not a worthless piece of shit. Everyone was put on this planet for a reason. You mean something and you always will. Sure you lied a couple of times, but we all do. That won't change the fact that me and the guys, all of us care about you and I enjoy being your friend. Luke doesn't care that you lied, probably doesn't know, but he probably won't care, you're his sister and he'll always be there for you. No matter what. As for Calum, well, he's been happier than ever. Ever since you walked into his life. He talks about you a lot, I mean a lot. I admit he does get annoying, but ya know, I listen anyway. His feeling are very strong for you. And remember that," Ashton said.

I pulled away and wiped my tears away.

"Now smile," Ashton insisted.

I smiled.

A real smile.

"See that's better. Calum's right, you do have a great smile."

I snorted. "Thanks Ash."

"No problem. You'e gonna be okay. Don't worry."

I nodded.

"Okay, well, I'm going back inside," He stood up and walked back into the house.

After about an hour of sitting outside I stood and entered the house.

I walked through the hallway and into the living room.

The music was still playing.

The guys were all asleep, snoring lightly.

I smiled to myself.

I took the ice pack off Luke's hands, Michael's ears, Ashton's shoulder and Calum's head.

He looked so peaceful when he slept.

I gently ran my fingers through his black hair.

He's so gorgeous.

I set the packs on the table.

I bounded up the stairs.

A small door caught my attention.

I walked to it and opened it.

I remember going up the familiar stairs all the time when I was younger.

I entered and closed the door behind me.

I walked up the metal spiral staircase.

Once I reached the top I opened the door to the dusty attic.

There was an old twin bed in one corner.

My old toys, like Barbie dolls, play houses were laying on the floor.

So much memories of me as a child.

Back when times were simpler.

I went to another door and opened it. I climbed yet another staircase.

I opened the door and stepped onto the roof of my house.

The sunlight warmed my skin.

The roof was flat and I lay down, looking up at the blue sky.

I tried to forget all my mistakes, regrets, and pain.

I should be happy. I have great friends, amazing family. I got Luke. And Calum's in my life.

Isn't that worth smiling about?
