I was laying in an open field, the wind caressing my face as i looked up at the clouds and listened to the leaves of the trees rustling. I was relaxed and at peace, something felt very real but in the back of my mind i knew it was just a dream. I sat up looking around and to the left of me a large oak tree had a man sitting underneath it with a German Shepard puppy looking up at him. They were on what looked like a checkered blanket with a cute picnic basket on the right corner of it holding it down so the wind didn't blow the blanket.
I looked down to see what I was wearing and sure enough it was a strapless white dress that clung to my hips and flared out a little bit going down to the middle of my thigh. Picnic, in an open field, with a guy, in a white dress? This is my 'dream' date.
I stood up and flattened the dress down a bit. A closer look at my hands and a beautiful simple wedding ring was placed on my left hand. Great. I was married? i'm too young for this why is this even a dream i'm having. On the ground by my feet i noticed an old fashioned looking travel mirror. I picked it up and looked at myself. I gasped hardly recognizing the stranger that stared back at me. I looked to be around 25 or 28. I decided to go to this mystery man who must be my husband, the dog noticed and started running towards me. I couldn't help but smile at the puppies little gallop and her little ears flopping up and down.
"Hi hunny" I bent down and pet her and then she followed me back to the Oak tree.
"Hey," i said to the stranger as if i were meeting him for the first time.
He let out a deep chuckle that gave me goose bumps."Hey?" he said questioningly and turned to face me.
"David?" I asked, shocked. He looked older as well, with facial scruff and a smile that nearly knocked me off my feet.
"Why do you look so surprised babe?"
"What? Where is my husband?" I asked, and then i noticed a ring on his left hand that matched the color of my band.
He laughed and pulled me down into his lap."I'm right here, duh. Why are you being so weird?"
"Sorry," I said, blushing.
"Yeah, yeah. Are you hungry now?" He asked. I was still a bit confused but nodded my head enthusiastically curious as to what was in the basket. I got up and went to the basket and sat down facing David. I placed the basket in between us and he watched me as i opened it.
"what is this?" I asked him.
"It's all of your favorites silly," he smiled at me. The way he looked at me was so breath taking I almost forgot about the food. I looked back into the basket and grabbed everything out. Mac and cheese, sushi, sunflower seeds without the shell, sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and two bags of lollipops. For the drink, there was a container of strawberry lemonade with strawberries at the bottom of it just the way i like it.
"You're perfect, this is literally the weirdest combination of foods but I want to eat it all," I said pouring a handful of sunflower seeds into my hand and shoving them into my mouth. He's already married to me so, might as well not give a fuck if I feast on the food.
He laughed at my enthusiasm and grabbed sunflower seeds for himself. "I know, you tell me everyday"
I smiled at him and we continued to eat and talk about random things, until he got completely serious all of a sudden.
The scenery changed, it got very cold and the sun was setting. I was wearing a sweater and some leggings with a pair of vans on my feet and the David I was married to shifted back to the one in the present. The puppy was gone, and so was the food. We weren't in an open field anymore, we were in a park. I started crying and David pulled me into a hug.
"Elizabeth," He started, "hush, it's ok. I'm still here. You need to listen to me." He pushed me back so he could look at me.
"okay?" i said sounding a little confused as i wiped the tears from my eyes.
"You need to make up with Izzy, you need to forget about you're high school love, and stop trying to bury your feeling you have for me with Paul. Own your feelings. One day, you're going to need Izzy and she'll need you too. That guy from high school? He's in the past and you cant have every guy in the world, hes going to move on just like you have. So what if its with your best friend, especially if shes happy, you love her like a sister and you want her to be happy."
"i know," i said looking down at the ground guiltily. David put his hand on my cheek and I looked up at him. "what about you?" I asked.
"That's for you to figure out, but you have feelings for me so like i said, own them. We may not be forever, but we are right now. That much i can promise. One day you will meet the one for you and it will be picture perfect, just like your dream.
"How can you promise me anything? Exactly like you said, dream. That's all this is."
"But what does your heart tell you?"
Just then, David disappeared and the German Sheppard was back. It jumped up on a Merry-Go-Round that was about 10 feet in front me. She sat down and let out a howl as the final light from the sun disappeared and the moon shone brightly. A feeling of hope washed over me and I stared hearing voices.
"Elizabeth?!" I heard a familiar voice exclaim, Izzy. "C'mon Elizabeth please wake up!" Slowly, I was able to open my eyes and i was on a bench. I started remembering what had happened and looking at Izzys face directly i realized she really did care, she was worried about me and even came after me.
"thank god!" she exclaimed, helping me up.
I stood up, not really knowing what to say and luckily Izzy broke the silence. "come on," she said, "you need to get some sleep, lets go back to our room."
Izzy and Paul walked on either side of me to be there in case I wasn't completely stable. I felt a little guilty for acting like such a child and I could still feel the tension between us.
"well, this is where I should head to my dorm,"Paul said, looking at me. Then he looked to Izzy, "Will you be alright taking her yourself? she seems stable to me."
"yeah, I can no problem," Izzy said, smiling at him.
"Alright then, I'll see you around okay?" Then Paul turned and headed towards his dorm.
The walk with Izzy was slightly awkward with neither of us talking to each other and I knew I needed to figure out something to say. When we got into our room, Izzy was headed to the bathroom.
"Izzy wait," i said, stopping her.
"I just want you to know that i'm sorry for the way i've been acting, so immature. That's not who I am and you have been a great friend to me, I was the one starting to act like a bitch and i want you to know that i didn't mean any of the things i said to you earlier."
"I know Elizabeth, don't worry i know you were mad and so was I, I'm sorry too."
"so we are good then?"
"Yeah, we are," Izzy said, giving me a smile. "get some rest now okay?"
"alright, i'll see you tomorrow," I said, smiling back at her and heading to my bed. I hadn't realized just how tired i was until i laid down, I didn't even have the energy to change my clothes. I passed out immediately, hoping I would dream of him again. Hoping to have nice long chats about things that interest us, video games or graphic novels, anime shows or music. I hoped to see us living together in a cute house and that German Sheppard puppy, but mostly i just wanted him to look at me with that unspoken expression that told me I was the only one for him.
