Ashton paced. The day had been perfect. Mindy had laughed more times than he could count. They talked for hours. And his cheeks were sore from smiling. But now, he wasn’t smiling any more. He was frowning.
“Where is he? God damn it, Luke” He ran a hand through his hair again.
Mindy was sitting down on the couch and she was worried too but not for Luke. “To be honest, I swear my sister has something to do with his absence. I’m not even kidding. Ashton, I swear if Elena has anything to do with this, I will kill her”
He sighed and sat down. “No. Let’s just wait and see. We don’t even know, yet”
“Alright” She bounced her leg up and down, anxiously and Ashton got back up and started pacing again.
Luke should have seen the signs, there were so many of them blaring like headlights in his eyes, he didn’t understand how he missed them. First sign; thinking he wanted to try Becky’s Burgers was a date. Second sign; mistreating the fans. Third sign; calling him her boyfriend.
After what seemed like ages, Elena stopped dragging him and found themselves inside an abandoned alleyway. This was the fourth sign. Every movie Luke had seen predicted this was going to end badly. He had no idea…
Elena looked around and sighed.
Luke looked at her, incredulous.
“Care to explain what that was just about?”
“What do you mean, sweetie?” She asked, innocently, batting her eyelashes. Luke felt sick to the stomach. Sweetie? He inwardly shuddered.
“I mean when you yelled at my fans, when you callously pushed them aside, when you walked over them like a doormat, when you called me your boyfriend? Any of that ring a bell, sweetie?” He said, his voice raising. He had expected Elena to flinch or cower or something that showed anything resembling sorriness or fear or something. Instead, she just blinked.
“I was just trying to help you get out of the crowd. I figured you needed help”
“So what, you thought that fans didn’t have feelings and were machines? That they wouldn’t get hurt if they were pushed to the ground?”
Elena’s mouth opened and closed but no words came out.
“And who do you think you are, calling me your boyfriend and where do you come from? Because I think you need to go back there.”
“I just thought…”
“What? You thought that after one blind date, we were all of a sudden dating? I don’t know what planet you come from but on this planet, people become girlfriend/boyfriend after more than one date.”
Elena showed no emotion that resembled anything humane. Then Luke saw something in her eyes that scared him. Resolve. And she sighed. It was a long, exhausted sigh.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do this, Luke. But you leave me no choice”
Luke suddenly realised what type of fan she was. She was the ‘if I can’t have you, no one can’, over-obsessive, creepy, stalker fan. And within the second that it took for Elena to somehow knock him out, he instantly regretted deciding to give the girl a chance. He made the entirely the wrong one.
Mindy wanted to scream in frustration. She just knew that Elena had something to do with Luke being M.I.A. She didn’t know how she knew, but deep down in the pit of her stomach, she knew Elena had something to do with it.
Mike and Calum had shown up at the house not long ago. Ashton had told them – which she thought was pointless, they didn’t need to stress too, but she understood because they were more than band mates, they were best mates.
She was now currently trying to contact her friends. She had just hang up from them, asking them to let her know if they saw either Elena or Luke or both, when she saw Mike suddenly glance up from his phone.
“Mindy, what’s your sisters name again?” He said, without warning.
“That name rings a bell. I swear I know her through someone…”
“Ashton, what’s you ex’s name again?”
"Lindsey” Ashton said, warily.
“Didn’t she have a friend named Elena? Or had? I don’t know if they are still friends”
“Yeah, according to her this Elena was like loco crazy?”
Mindy stood up and held out her hand to stop their converstion, abruptly. “Hold up, you think my sister is and/or was friends with your ex, Lindsey?” She said, looking at them. “Because my sister is not ‘loco crazy’ as you so mildly put it”
“Are you sure? Your sister did manage to get fans inside a hotel and mob us”
“Okay, sure, she is a little crazy but she would not do anything super crazy like kidnap Luke. She knows not to do that…” Mindy trailed off, the boys raised an eyebrow. “I think…I hope…Ugh! ELENA!”
“Well, you know what they say about hope?”
“Don’t say it. You say it, you become lamer than me. Do not quote PLL”
“It breeds eternal misery”
Mindy rolled her eyes. “I’m calling her”
“You sure that’s the best thing to do?”
“Sure. Why not?” Mindy said, curiously. Why couldn’t she call her sister?
“Uhm, because you might poke the bear doing that and it might retaliate on Luke”
Crap. Ashton was right. But she might as well try. She doubted Elena wouldn’t answer phone or she’ll answer and be doing something completely opposite to kidnapping Luke.
She dialled and put it on loudspeaker. It rang three times before she answered. “Hey sis, what’s up?”
Mindy froze, caught unaware. “Uh, Elena, hey, where are you right now?”
“I’m out and about. Why?” Mindy knew her sister like a favourite book. If Elena was up to no good and you asked about it, she will answer with a non-answer and use her three point plan thing; evasive, defensive and offensive, abrupt. This was evasive.
“Oh, I was just wondering…I was worried about you. I haven’t seen or heard from you today”
While she was speaking, she wrote Elena’s Three Point Diversion thing and showed the boys.
Elena’s Three Point Plan;
Evasive Defensive and Offensive Abrupt
If she uses all three in this call, she has Luke.
Ashton wrote back. Ask if she’s friends with Lindsey
Elena snapped at her. “Well, I’m fine. You know, you’re not my mother. Just because she’s gone, you don’t have to be her. She’ll always be a better mother than you” Defensive and offensive
Mindy froze and looked at Ashton. She hoped he interpreted the ‘she’s gone’ as gone overseas not as in dead. To her relief, he didn’t look like he noticed.
She’s used point one and two
“Elena, calm down. I was just curious. Before I go, do you know someone called [ex name]?”
“No. I have to go, Min. I won’t be home until late so don’t wait up” Abrupt. Mindy’s heart sunk lower than her sister is.
“Alright, sis. Bye”
“So, what do we do now?” Calum asked, his chocolate brown eyes wide and worried. Mike gave him a hug.
“Mate, it will all work out in the end. Won’t it, Mindy?”
Crap She hated being put it on the spot. Calum looked at her, brown eyes looking at her full of trust and hope and so many other emotions that guilt trapped her into saying;
“Of course it will” How could you lie to someone like Calum? You couldn’t.
“Promise?” Calum said, his voice small like a child asking his mum to promise to look after him during the night from a monster.
Mindy’s heart broke a little. “I promise” Then resolve formed in her head. She will not let down Calum or the boys. It was her sister who kidnapped Luke and because – little did Ashton know – their parents were gone as in buried, and they had no other immediate relatives over 18, she was responsible for Elena. She was so disappointed in herself but she’d fix this, just to see the boys and more importantly, Ashton smile again. Heck she thought I wanna smile again. As she thought that, she started to feel worry lines form on her forehead. Now I know what it feels like to be Mum and Dad…
And with that thought, she realised jpust how much she actually missed her parents.
Where are you when I need you the most? I miss you
A/N: Hey it’s Danii, the co-author of this brilliant book. Just a note to say that, I hadn’t the planned the ending of this brilliant chapter. It just happened, and that’s know how good your book. Best books are never planned…they’re spontaneous. I thought a finished this chapter when she thought about what it felt like to be her parents but then all of a sudden, I realised it wasn’t finished. And while I’m writing this and eating Indian and wrote the words ‘I miss you’ I was like ‘ermagherd!! That’s the title of this book, what a coinkydonk. That means coincidence.
Anyway, sorry its been a while. I assure I am not dead, duh. Just Year 12 is kicking my butt and need to focus on school but Zeechick, the other brilliant co-author of this book, is writing the next chapter and let’s hope that Mindy somehow rescues Luke, gets her sister under control and still loves Ashton through all of it…or will her sister be a barrier between them and will have to leave him because her sister is, as Ash put it, loco crazy?
I don’t even know!!
Btw, Zeechick, sorry for being gone for so long!!! But tell me that this chapter was worth the wait?? I love it!!
