George goes home for the weekend and I'm left with nothing to do. I hang out with Winnie and everyone for a bit but then they all have some essay to do again. I even consider asking Lucy if she wants to do anything but I realise that's a stupid idea. I'm sitting on a bench doing some work one day when Ed sits next to me. I tense. I just want to run away right now but somehow I don't think that would work out.
"Hi." I say. It feels awkward between the two of us.
"Hey." he says, sipping his coffee. "Where have you been recently?"
I shrug. "With George, I guess."
"Figured." he nods. "Look, could you two please actually focus in the lectures? It's pretty off putting to hear you both giggling at the back of the room."
I could start an argument with him but I really can't be bothered to. I just carry on scrolling down my work on my laptop to avoid looking at him. "Sorry."
He hovers for another moment and then sighs, walking away. I feel kind of bad about the whole thing but again, I forget all about it when I'm around George the next day in the lecture. Before the lecture, I was set on being quiet and not upsetting Edward anymore because I'm trying not to stir anything but as soon as I get to the back row where George is already sat and he takes my hand, I don't even care anymore. I lean over and kiss him and he smiles against my lips, kissing me back.
"You're late." he says when he pulls away.
I frown, smiling at the same time and look around the lecture hall. "There's literally nobody else here. Not even Mr Feyson. You're stupidly early."
"I just wanted to make sure we got a good seat." he jokes, putting his arm around me. I lean into his side as Winnie and everybody walks in, taking a seat near the front. Edward walks in not long afterwards.
"Um, no." he says, pointing to the two of us. "You two aren't sitting together again. Not after yesterday."
"Sorry, sir." George says, warmly. "We'll be quieter today. Daisy was just being really rude and distracting me yesterday-"
"Shut up!" I laugh, hitting him.
"Yeah, I'm not convinced." Edward shakes his head. "One of you, move."
"Please sir, we won't talk today." George says, still holding onto my hand.
"I'm not changing my mind." he calls as he goes over to his laptop.
I sigh, kissing George's cheek. "See you later."
I go down the steps and sit beside Winnie. We chat for a little bit before the lecture begins and we agree to have a girly night in at her's and Poppy's dorm room. At some point during the lecture, I can't concentrate anymore and I'm just thinking about the fact that George is right up there. I'm also thinking about something Junie asked me about him when I was telling her about him on the phone the other day. She asked me why I liked him and I told her that I didn't know, I just did.
And that's the truth. I don't know why I like him. I haven't really discovered one stand out thing about his personality yet that has made me fall for him. It's just a very casual relationship and that's not a bad thing because I think that is what we both want right now. We're dating because there's something about each other that we like and we have fun together. I'm not stupid, I know it's not going to last and he knows that too but it's okay because right now in this moment, we're having fun together and we like each other and that's enough. I know it would be completely different if I went down the same road with Edward and I don't like thinking about that so I don't.
At one point in the lecture, Edward is showing us some video and the lights are out so I take the opportunity to sneak up the steps and sit with George again. He's focused on the video and doesn't notice I'm there until I kiss him on the cheek. He grins, still focused on the screen and takes my hand before kissing my cheek back.
"We're going to get into trouble." he whispers right into my ear so nobody else could hear us.
"What is this, secondary school?" I whisper back.
He chuckles quietly and kisses me properly. "Go back down before he notices. I'll see you tonight."
"I've said I'll go to Winnie and Poppy's." I tell him, wishing I hadn't agreed to that. "I can come to yours in the morning though, before English."
He shakes his head. "I've got a lecture in the morning."
"Well I guess I'll skip English then." I whisper.
"No, you should probably go." he says, unsure, but I know he'll agree to me skipping and coming over to hang out with him instead.
"I'll be at yours at one." I grin at him and rush back down to my seat before he can object again.
