"Get back here you little monkey." Annie calls after Finley as he goes running off down the street. Finley stops in his tracks as Annie runs up to catch him. He stands there with his small chubby arms crossed, blowing raspberry's at his Mother. Willow, on the other hand, is fast asleep in Peeta's arms. Not making any sound at all.
It took forever to get Finley and Willow agree to leave the cafe. When Peeta first spoke of going home Willow crawled of into the tunnel in the play pen while Finley hid at the top of the slide. We made it into a quick game of hide and seek. The game only lasted a few minutes and whilst I carried a very unhappy, crying Willow and Annie carrid out a very grumpy Finley, Peeta ran of into the cafe to buy them each an ice lolly. That finally got the to agree to leave.
"Peeta." I say quietly, so Finley can't hear me. We have stopped outside a sweet shop and I am surprised Finley hasn't spotted it. Not that I want him to either, Annie looks worn out and we need to get home. He turns and looks at me.
"I am quickly going in here, try and help Annie keep Finley distracted." I say. I turn and disappear into the sweet smelling shop.
The millions of different smelling sweets block out the smell of the wood work within the shop. I remember when I was young I used to run into the old sweet shop and stand there forever with my eyes closed, breathing in the delicious smells.
I quickly purchase a big bag of mixed sweets along with a small bag of fish shaped marsh mallows for Finley and a small tub of chocolate ice cream for Willow.
"You ready?" Peeta asks me as I walk out.
"Yeah, now lets go before Finley spots the shop."
"Does everyone's street say that?" Finley asks as we walk under the sign that reads 'Victors Village'
"No. But you will learn about it when you are older." Annie says as we walk up the steps that lead to mine and Peeta's house.
I grab hold of Willow as Peeta fumbles into his pocket for the keys.
"Auntie Katniss what is in that bag?" Finley asks eyeing the bag filled with sweets.
"You ask a lot of questions for a 2, nearly 3 year old." I laugh. "It's a surprise."
Finley goes speeding into the house as soon as Peeta opens the door. Annie gives me a sorry look.
"I am so sorry Katniss, I don't know where he gets all of his energy from." She says as we walk inside.
"It's okay. Kids will be kids." Peeta says.
Peeta heads of into the kitchen to get dinner ready, while I show Annie and Finley to their room and get Willow ready for bed.
"Next time auntie Effie gets you someting, make sure it doesn't turn you into a cabitch patch kid." I say to Willow whilst unbuttoning the fluffy green dress. I put her into a light pink baby grow with a rabbit on the front that Haymitch actually got her. One thing for sure, Haymitch doesn't plan on turning our daughter into a cabitch patch kid any time soon.
"Mommy, where is my daddy?" Finley unexpectedly asks as we sit around the table eating dinner.
Annie looks as if she might burst into tears, but I know she is holding them back to keep strong. For Finley.
"Daddy is in heaven, he is with all the other angels. He is watching over you and protecting you." She says. Finley looks up towards the ceiling.
I imagine Finnick, Prim and Dad looking down on us, protecting us.
"But, but why is daddy an angel in heaven." He asks.
"Finley, you don't need to worry about that. All you need to know is that your daddy is an angel in heaven protecting you. Now why don't you be a big boy for mommy, auntie Katniss and uncle Peeta and eat all your tomato soup." Peeta says.
Annie looks over to us and mouths 'thankyou'.
After dinner I help Peeta collect up all the bowls and spoons and wash them, whilst Annie sits in the living room with Willow and Finley.
"I feel as it is my fault that Finnick is gone." I blurt out.
"Katniss, what makes you think that?" Peeta asks.
"Well if I hadn't of pull-" Peeta cuts me off.
"Katniss in no way, shape or form is it your fault. You saved our country. Stop blaming yourself for everything."
"No Katniss, what has happened has happened. We can't change what has happened in the past. Now please stop blaming yourself." Peeta begs me. I sigh.
"Okay." Peeta walks up to me and wraps his arms around me.
"Sometimes in life, we just have to accept what has happened and move on."He whispers.
"All our loved ones who are gone would want us to as well. Your dad and Prim would want you to be happy."
"And your family would want you to also be happy." I say.
"I know my dad would and maybe my brothers but i don't think my mother would really care." He says.
"Yes she would, they all would. Just because she hurt you didn't mean she didn't love you."
"I just don't understand why she had to hurt me." Peeta sounds so broken, so upset when he says it.
"Peeta, sometimes our loved ones do hurt us but deep down beneath that nastiness is love. Your mother still loves you." I say. He rests his head on top of mine.
"I love you Katniss." I move my head, look into his beautiful eye and run my fingers over his cheek.
"I love you too Peeta." I gently press my lips onto his.
Willow comes crawling in, on her hands and knee's and tugs on the bottom of Peeta's trousers.
"Hello little one." He says as he picks her up, you can clearly tell that they will have a special father-daughter relationship jut like my dad and I did. You can also tell by the look in his eyes that he is a natural with children, he has so much love for them.
Willow reaches out and tugs on a little piece of hair that must have fallen out of my ponytail, like she is asking me to come and join the hug. A family hug. I smile and wrap my arms around Willow and Peeta. My family.
"Who wants some sweets?" I ask after a few minutes.
"Me. Me. Me." Finley runs in yelling.
I get out the big bag of sweets along with Willow's chocolate ice cream and Finley's marshmallow's and head into the living room along with Peeta who has Willow in his arms and an excited Finley following behind us. I sit down next to Annie on the couch.
When i hand Finley his fish shaped marshmallows his face brightens up like a little kid who has just been taken into a toy store and told they could have anything they wanted. I open the big bag of mixed sweets and place them onto the table.
Peeta passes me Willow, I sit her on my lap and begin to feed her her chocolate ice cream. You can tell by the smile that appears on her face that she enjoys it.
"Willow likes chocolate ice cream." I say in my baby voice. She begins to bounce up and down and clap her small chubby hands. I laugh I only feed her half of the pot, the other half I will save for tomorrow. Not I long after Annie offers to take her up and put her in bed. Peeta and I both say goodnight to our little princess, with a hug and a kiss and pass her to Annie.
"Night Annie, night Finley." Peeta and I both say in unison as they trail of upstairs. I lean my head on Peeta's shoulder, watching the flames flicker in front of us. It is silent apart from the crackling of the fire.
"I am such a lucky man." Peeta says after a while.
"I have a beautiful wife and a beautiful daughter, I love both of them so much." I smile and look at him, his eyes are filled with such love.
"And I am such a lucky lady, I have a handsome husband and a gorgeous daughter, and I also love them so much." Peeta smiles and puts his fingers under my chin, he then tilts my head up and kisses me gently.
Since the war ended I have realized something, life won't be the same as it was before but that doesn't mean it can't be any better. Yes loved ones did lose their lives in the war but they will still always be with us, in our hearts. So this is the moment that I realize that my life can't get any better than this, I have Peeta, Willow, Mom, Haymitch, Effie, Gale, Annie and Finley with me today and I also have Prim, my father, Finnick and Rue. With me, In my heart.
