My mother cradles me in her warm arms as we walk onto the

balcony of the castle. "Say hello, Lei," she says as she gently

wiggles my tiny hand in a small wave.

Throughout the castle gardens the crowd murmurs.

"This is our future queen!" My mother raises her voice above the

roars. "All hail Princess Leilah!"

I gurgle my baby laugh as the crowd falls onto their knees. "Long

live the Empire!"

My mother smiles warmly down at me as we re-enter the nursery.

"Did you see all of those people, Lei? Those are -- "

"David!" I scream and giggle as he grabs my arm and jumps on

top of me, enveloping me in a hug,

"Tag, you're it."

He doesn't say it in a playful way. I furrow my small eyebrows

together, confused. "What's wrong?" Of course, as a five-

year-old child I slur my words together.

He grins. "Gotcha."

Then leaps up and runs to my mother, who's reading a book on the

bench. "Lei's mommy, you can't tell her where I'm hiding, okay? It

has to be a secret."

I tiptoe behind him.

My mother lifts her head, saying, "Of course, David. We shan't tell

her where you're hiding. After all, she's not standing right --" She

grabs him and swirls him in the air, facing him in my direction.

"behind you!"

David squeals.

"No! No! You can't let her get me!" She's tickling him now, and he's

in a fit of hiccups and giggles.

"I think the bodice could be a little tighter, Nancy."

"Yes, Your Highness."

I squirm under my ball gown. "But I can barely breathe as it is!"

"It takes pain to be beautiful. That's why it's not fair, because

somehow your beautiful naturally. But a skinnier waist attracts the

men." My mother wiggles her eyebrows.

I roll my eyes. "Of course, because I don't have enough men kissing

my feet already," I say as I dramatically flip my hair.

"You're lucky we haven't done your hair yet, or you would've ruined

I feel a pin at my side, and Nancy tells me to be still.

"I wouldn't have done it if my hair was done, Mother."

"I think we're done here! Is there anything else that you see that

needs improvement before I am dismissed, Your Majesty?"

"It's fine, Nancy. I have to talk to Leilah alone for a minute. "

"As you wish, Your Highness."

I proceed to unlacing my dress as my mother sits on the lavender

"Gosh, this thing is so -- "

I don't glance up from my tangled fingers. "Hmmm?"

"We're in trouble."

That catches my attention enough to halt my fumbling. "What do

you mean?"

"The government has updated their technology. "

"Well, that's good, right?"

"No. They've upgraded it far more than they should've. You know

the tracking devices we had installed after the war?"

I nod. My father had ordered a chip to be placed in every high

ranking official in the kingdom to supervise activity after there were

small rebel groups forming.

"They're all about control."

"Oh. Oh."

"The chips were installed in the brain. I've noticed a change in

behavior of everyone but our royal family. I think they've

downloaded personality updates, altering their behaviors and

They're trying to take over."
