4. "Not Anymore."

Tuesday, 23rd September 2014

Summer hid under the covers as she tried to block out the horrible sounds from her ears. Her eyes welled up and overflowed, a flood of tears staining her bed sheets.

"There goes another plate.", Summer thought to herself.

"And a pot."

The shatter of china rang up the stairs, into the bedroom and straight into Summer's ears.

"What a waste of a vase."

"And there goes Darryl."

Summer sobbed silently as she knew this was only the beginning. She knew. She knew that this was where the pain would start.

"But not anymore. If Darryl, Dad, Colton, Charles, Kyle and whoever else could leave, then I can, too."

The petite girl shook her head at the thought of her mother's countless boyfriends over the past 2 years. She looked up, wide eyes searching the room.

"I should have planned for this earlier. I wonder what I should bring. "

Moving quietly, Summer pulled herself out of bed and glanced at the clock.

"2:34AM. Mother is probably having another drink right now."

Thump, thump, thump.

"Or not. Here she comes."

Summer dove back into her ratty mattress and dove under the thin, worn out covers.

"Shtoopid Darryl. Can't even get a shob. Now I hafta' work wiff ma' own bare handsh to get me somefin' to eat. Shtoopid, good fo nothin' kid. Shtoopid failed aborshion."

A silent gasp escaped Summer's lips. Then a shadow appeared in her doorway as Andrea, Summer's mother, wobbled through.

"Get up, Shammer. Don'tsh chooo know that choo're a washte of food. Now I hafta work to feed you. You're shtoopid.", Andrea's words were slurred.

"Choo can't eefen get a shob. Choo're a washte. I hate shoo!"

And with that, Andrea grabbed Summer and slapped her right cheek. The tears fell hard from Summer's eyes.

"Shtop crying. Choo're shuch a babbie."

A punch flew to Summer's eye.

"Choo're good for nofink."

Long, sharp nails slashed across Summer's face.

Flop. Andrea fell asleep across Summer's bed Summer ran to her bathroom and let out her sobs, this time out loud.

"I shouldn't even be alive.", Summer whimpered. She splashed cold water against her stinging face. "I need to leave.", she whispered. Her tears stung the scratches on her face.

Summer tip-toed across her bedroom and picked up a small bag. She grabbed her old cell phone and tip-toed back out and down the stairs, trying her hardest not to make a sound. When she reached the kitchen, she packed a water bottle and a packet of crackers. She paused, then tip-toed carefully back to her room, snagged her makeup bag, toothbrush and toothpaste, almost dropping her things at the sound of Andrea's snore. Summer sighed as she looked towards Andrea. Goodbye, Mother.

As soon as Summer was out of the house, she pulled out her cell and texted Darryl.

Summer: Where r u?

Darryl: Go 2 sleep, kiddo. Soz if I woke ya up.

Summer: Mom's asleep in my bed.

Darryl: She hit u again hun?

Summer: Yep. So where are you?

Darryl: U can't come with me kid.

Summer: How'd you know?

Darryl: Tried that when I was a kid. Kind of went through what u just went through. Just go 2 sleep, kid. I g2g, cya.

Summer: Bye.

Summer frowned. Now what am I going to do? Looking left and right, she headed down the road towards 'Callie's Cafe'.
