I roll over groaning, the blinds opened and a flood of light invaded the room. I open my eyes slowly and look around
“James there are a pair of potential parents downstairs. Why don’t you come and say hello?
I groan again and sit up carefully.
“That’s a good lad, you never know today might be your day today.”
I look at her incredulously.
“I’m sorry, my day? No today won’t be my day. Why would it?” I ask her.
She goes to answer, oh how painful her thoughts are to hear.
“Don’t think Miss it’s not your strong suit. Now if I must attend this worthless meeting then go and let me get dressed.”
She nods and goes to walk out of my room, two boys burst out laughing from the door way. I looked at them, a smile tugging at my lips as I recognize my two friends.
“Yes oh let me guess…you have a date today with the young Miss Danielle and you want a day of video games?”
She crosses her arms at them then goes downstairs, they both nod.
“One minute.” I shut the door and quickly change.
I fling the door open again and fake a smile “let’s go and get this over with.”
The boys follow me down just as young Jimmy McGuire comes running up, he keeps muttering excitedly. We carry on down to see miss stood there talking to someone, he has grey-white hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a button up shirt under a grey long coat, he had blue trousers on and some sort of smaller jacket under the coat. He looks over and Miss turns around. They both smile at me and the man puts something into his wallet then puts it away. He starts to approach us, a million things coming to me just from looking at him. It’s weird I know, I quickly narrow it down. “Ahh you must be James I’m-”
I smile and take the extended hand to shake it. “Gary Lestrade. You work for Scotland Yard, you also knew my mother. You were quite close judging by what must’ve been a picture of you two together, shortly before she met my father. On that subject you’re here to I’m guessing be my new father by the fact that today you showed Miss that picture from your wallet.”
Miles, Tom, Miss and this Lestrade guy look at me wide eyed.
“Oh come on stop being so…common. Honestly does no one remember the letter? It stated that I was not going to be adopted like most are, it had to be a person close to my mother, someone with evidence they knew her.” I feel a chuckle erupt from my mouth “I guess that today is my day, whatever that means.” I move my hand as if I’m shaking away a thought. “Can I see the picture then?”
He passes it to me, I look at it, looking for anything to suggest a fake.
“Hmm this is not a fake” I smile at Tom and Miles, the only two friends I have and turn back to them. “I’d better go pack then hadn’t I?”
I go to walk up the stairs Tom and miles in pursuit, we hear them talking about someone called Sherlock and John, I roll my eyes. That Lestrade seems nice but I’ll have to keep an eye on him, I look at Tom who is talking to Miles.
“Man we’re so going to miss you. It was fun these past few years you know, the way you would embarrass people. If it wasn’t for you I would’ve gone with that couple that weren’t what they seemed. Who is this Sherlock and John though?” Miles asked me.
I shrug my shoulders and sit down on my bed. I lie back going through my thoughts. That name. Sherlock. It sounded so familiar, yet I can’t place it. I start to see a scene unfold in my mind and quickly open my eyes, I sit up and look at them.
“I don’t know! How am I supposed to know?!”
I shout at their expectant faces, it’s like they think I will know everything in the world. For crying out loud I’m only fifteen!
“Now help me pack will you? I have to be ready. Don’t want to keep the lucky parent waiting.”
The boys laugh at this and we say our good byes before Lestrade and I leave.
