What I Didn't Say

Charlotte Belle Tate seemed to have it all. Money, beauty, grace and talent. Not to mention that her hunky high school sweetheart would be popping the magic question sometime soon. Sure her life seems as if it is one to be desired, but what happens when the foundations begins to crumble right below her. Who will be there to pick up the pieces?

7. Chapter 7

The next few seconds for Charlotte were a blur. There was a loud thump and the familiar numbing sensation spread across her face. She collapsed in disbelief, barely managing to catch herself on impact.

Balancing her weight on one arm, Charlotte winced, feeling a sharp pain in her nose. She drew her fingers up to gingerly inspect the wound and gasped at the red that coated her fingers.

Jackson saw the blood drip down Charlotte’s fingers and stumbled back. He crumbled against the wall, holding his head in his hands. Imprisoned by his thoughts, it wasn’t moments later he became aware of Charlotte’s sweet vanilla scent and her tender hand on his shoulder.

“You dropped this,” she whispered softly in his ear. Opening his palm, she placed the Cartier ring box inside and closed his hand. He looked at her. And he wasn’t just looking at her smudged eyeliner or the blood oozing from her nose or even the way her dress hung just a little too loosely. He was really looking at Charlotte. Staring into his innocent brown eyes, he absorbed every little detail about her that he loved…every detail that belonged to him.

A single tear slipped out, and he didn’t hesitate to wipe it from Charlotte’s face. She flinched at his touch. Jackson drew back quickly, careful not to overstep his boundaries too soon. She looked away.

He looked down at the expensive ring box and shook his head. “I guess this was supposed to be the part when I asked you to marry me.”

Around them millions of New Yorkers and tourists began the legendary holiday chant, counting down the last few seconds of 2014.

“So then this must be the part when I give you my answer,” Charlotte added, looking back at her troubled boyfriend in thought. She brushed a single strand of hair behind her ear.

This was it. This was the moment she had been waiting for forever.

So what was it? Why couldn’t she just say yes?

Jackson Langley was perfect in almost every way.

Sure he had his flaws, but doesn’t everyone?

And he always apologized for his mistakes.

He took good care of her.

Her parents loved him…could it be Harry?

Or maybe it was that feeling she got around Liam?

Was it Jackson? Or just…her?
