Author's note

A work longer in the making than you could imagine. Ongoing on here since 2014, the idea and the desire to write it have been with me even longer than that.

19. Yesterday When The War Began Chapter Four

Jien smiled and was about to reply when she saw that he was already gone, leaving her stood there for a long time blinking back tears and trying to work up the courage to move, but knowing she couldn't just yet in case David was still nearby.

What if he wasn't ready to leave, maybe he was stood just around the corner as frozen by fear and indecision as her.

No he will be gone. We said our goodbyes made love one last time, for a while she quickly thought. Just got to keep telling myself that she said aloud.

David knows he has to leave and I know it too.

David had gone, as soon as he turned and walked away, around one corner into the adjacent corridor. Down that corridor and towards the turbo lift.

He got to his quarters to grab a few of his personal possessions photo's of his mum, Riley, Jien one of him as kid with his mum and Admiral Hudson. A few Cardassian crystals that had more photos and his entire music collection and recordings of stuff he and Jien had gotten up to in the Holosuites.

The rest he put into the Replicator to recycle, old uniforms and most of his off duty clothes and more personal stuff he couldn't take with him, but wanted to keep he dematerialized and used the Replicator to store them in its memory, hopefully to get back once he returns when the war ends.

He walked out of the quarters he had lived in for five years and headed for the docking ring and boarded The Defiant.

Once aboard he was assigned to the engine room so he didn't get the chance to look out of any window as the ship departed the station.

Jien remained in the corridor stood for a while willing him to return or wake up or discover this whole day had been a nightmare, but neither happened. She  considered going to watch the Defiant leave, taking a few minutes to think through the schematics of the station and work out the best place to get to and see the ship as it departs and the quickest route to get there.

Ultimately deciding against it as she did not want the sterile image of a Starfleet ship being the last thing she associates him with.

Nor would seeing a ship decouple from the station help her accept he was gone any sooner.

"David is gone and Starfleet will be all gone shortly as well. That part of your life is over, at least for now. She said aloud trying hard to make herself believe it."

The Dominion with the Cardassians in tow are coming and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Jien said, the realisation sinking in.

With that Jien got herself moving heading up to to see Major Kira and sort out her immediate future.

David and Jien almost simultaneously came back to the present.

Breaking off the salute Jien left a bemused Nog behind as she turned and walked away stepping on to the turbolift to go down so she could be there when David set foot back on to the station.

From his position sitting in the chair at helm control David watched Jien leave before he returned to finishing executing the procedures and the Melbourne reached the docking ring and the correct airlock.

As the ship docked Jien was already there waited for David to disembark. Twenty minutes passed before he appeared as the last to one to step out of the airlock.

The moment they saw each other Jien ran towards him with joy, a smile as wide as the station spread across her face. Her eyes getting bigger as she let what she was seeing sink in. Her whole body language radiating how happy she was in that moment.

As they reached each other and finally embraced, David's reaction took them both by surprise.
